A Subway restaurant worker who refused over the weekend to serve a customer he believed was gay was fired. And it sure sounds like we missed a lovely showdown!
A Reddit user translates an Icelandic news report:
What it says in the news article is that a group of people that work together went to a Subway to grab a bite to eat. A foreign man was working and said in English, “I don’t serve gay people,” and asked someone else to serve the gay man wearing pink. The group was outraged and a gay man pointed out how would he feel if someone refused to serve him for not being Icelandic. The group went to eat elsewhere. This happened during this weekend. This morning [Monday] when the head of Subway In Iceland was contacted he said he was truly sorry about the incident and that the employee has been fired and is not allowed into Subway anymore.
He didn’t serve the man because he was wearing pink, and that automatically makes you gay? Just a small suggestion to the remaining Subway workers: When your head of state asks for a six-inch cold cut trio, don’t make a fuss. [photo via]

@PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS: Compared to what else passes for convenience “food,” Subway is about the best you can get in a hurry.

To all those who hit the thumbs down on #2: Have you ever taken a good look (and smell) at a slice of Subway “meat”??? You, know after they remove it from the pre-packaged-sliced plastic jimmy jam they mass produce at a central facility before being shipped to individual stores………Don’t you think it is oh so very interesting that a “sandwich” shop does not have a meat and or cheese slicer?
Please run down to your local Subway and then come back and report on what you have found……… :p

Hey Max Simon: prime ministers are heads of government; the president of Iceland is head of state. The president of Iceland is a married straight male. Your reference is to the lesbian prime minister, the head of government, who married her domestic partner after Iceland legalized marriage-equity.

I never heard of such a thing in Iceland before. Iceland is a very safe and inclusive country for gays.

This is all very confusing. I thought Finns were the Scandinavians most prone to sullen displays of petulance for whatever reason. But this guy was foreign, speaking English? Maybe this is a subtle “Brits out of Iceland” piece? Anyway, straight people and their problems nowadays. Might as well nail your foot to the floor and go walk a plumb line.

Seems like a nice place to live, at least until the 16 hour long winter nights make you want to jump into the mouth of that volcano with the unpronounceable name.

The employee’s attitude surprises me, but the management reaction does not. Iceland is probably the most overtly gay-friendly country I’ve ever visited (and I live in Sweden, for godsake). Many businesses in Reykjavik display rainbow flag stickers alongside the “Visa & Mastercard accepted” signage. The company that organized our whale-watching trip advertised the fact that their business manager is a lesbian ON THEIR COMPANY WEBSITE. My partner and I were so charmed by it that we didn’t even care that we never actually saw a whale on the four-hour tour.
