Indonesian police in Surabaya canceled this weekend’s International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association’s annual conference, with 150 activist participants from 16 countries expected to attend, because, after consulting with Muslim groups, the police believed “there are indications that the event could trigger a social crisis and cause public unrest. This ban was issued for the sake of public order.” [AP]

The excuse of fascist governments is always “public order” (god forbid they actually arrest the disorderly clerics rather than ban the peaceful conference). Utter hypocrisy! So does that mean all mosque events in Indonesia will be banned if the gay-allied community simply threatens disorder in response to those events?

To answer why a GLBTA human rights conference would be held in Indonesia, just remember that the global Yogyakarta Principles are named after the region in Indonesia on the island of Java where they were formulated by an international human rights conference.
