Remember The Family Leader’s Bob Vander Plaats, the Iowa conservative who wrote “The Marriage Vow”? Both Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum signed the “Vow” thus pledging to defy all three branches of government in a quest to rid America of abortion, porn, promiscuity and return to the good ol’ days of slavery!
Well Vander Plaats is not only a great writer of racist screeds he’s also got a knee-slapping sense of humor! Just check out this March 2011 Audubon, Iowa event where he says that many Iowans worried about becoming “the butt of jokes” for its Supreme Court declaring same-sex marriage bans unconstitutional. Then one of the attendees tells this gut-busting joke: Iowa, the state where you can’t smoke a fag, but you can marry one.
And Vander Plaats responds, “Oh shoot, that’s pretty good, that’s pretty good. Oh shoot.” Remember this is the guy who says that homosexuality if worse than smoking, so of course he finds cigarette-fag joke high-lair-ious.
Let’s safely assume that since he also opposes safe abortion and thinks that black families were better off during the civil war, that he probably also finds sexist and racist jokes funny too.
If you think that’s funny we got a fag that you can smoke right here, laughing boys.

Vander Plaats is a disgrace to both the state of Iowa and the human race. Nothing, absolutely nothing that he would say or do could shock or surprise me any longer. I was born in Iowa and reared and educated there and I can only say that Vander Plaats is getting a lot of media coverage but not a great deal of support from the Iowa people. He is one of an increasingly shrill and vocal minority who cannot abide change and difference among people and who clearly is afraid of ANY sexuality and perhaps has some secret he is desperately afraid people will discover.

I say fight back! Mr Van Poopst should stay home with his mother and cats. Do you know this excuse for a person ran for governor in Iowa? Twice! He pays himself $120K to run a hate group.
As only 2 candidates signed his pledge, I created a video response. Feel free to share the link, and the video wherever you like.

It’s Ms. Bachmann’s new campaign commercial.

Send him a rent boy and some meth then post the resulting video on the internet. Now that’s a joke.

Also discussed this, today, on my own Blog and how the local news media in Iowa (same for the DSM Register) seem to comment glowingly about the local GOP, including Vander Plaats, but never about a Democratic ally of the Gay community such as Mike Gronstal: http://thegaymilitia.blogspot.com/2011/07/bvps-big-blunder.html

Does your average Iowan understand that ‘smoke a fag’ means to have a cigarette in Brit-speak? I hardly believe his audience got the terrible pun.
Vander Plaats’ petition appears to have died on the vine, with so few signatories. Has he any power or relevance left now?

I’m thinking of moving to his district just so I can vote against him in the next election.

I say we get a black bear to seduce Vander Plaats. Then we’ll see how long he stays a whiny homophobe. Personally, I have experience with this sort of thing. And I guarantee he’d be changed.

Neo-con politics, people.
Personally, I hope either Bachmann or Santorum become GOP nominee… (Neither would stand a chance.)
Think of how much dirt we would have on the both of them. And, as for Vander Plaats, being an Iowan, we think he’s a pig. The Supreme Court Judges of Iowa who voted on the measure to approve gay marriage were voted out after Vander Plaats BIGOTED Iowa campaign commercials during 2010.
I’m proud of Iowa and the strides the state has made in human and civil rights through the past years. Iowa, surprisingly, has a low gay population, but the people (for the most part, outside of certain demographics) are EXTREMELY accepting of differences in people. Iowa is a groundbreaking state in the fight for marriage equality. Taking a geographical perspective on things, VT, NH, MA, NY and CT allow gay marriage (all on the Eastern Seaboard), while IA stands alone as a beacon of equality in the heart of the country.
Don’t worry about Iowa, people.
Heavy campaigning against these bigots will begin come..November/December.
