Is the Big Homophobe on Big Brother Brazil All That Bad? Yes, Actually

By now you must’ve heard there is a contestant on Big Brother Brazil, Marcelo Dourado, who is a raging homophobe, and is among a cast that includes three out gay contestants. He makes outrageous claims, like how straight guys cannot contract AIDS, because it’s a gay disease. The blog Made In Brazil is calling for Dourado’s head — in the form of getting enough viewers to vote him out of the house — and we don’t blame him. Television is not a safe space for raging homophobes. And yet …

This guy has all the markings of being an Arthur Kade-type, making statements so outrageous just to see if anyone will listen, and giving you the impression it’s all one big performance art act. And then he takes it one step too far: “Earlier in the season he caught the media attention by saying that heterosexual men could not contract the HIV virus even by having sex with HIV positive women because AIDS only affected gay men,” MIB writes. “After that statement, which was obviously addressed by Globo network, Dourado refused to have conversations which involved any gay topics saying that it disgusted him. He also said he wanted to beat the lesbian contestant and send her to the hospital, but that he couldn’t do it because if he were to physically attack someone he would be automatically eliminated from the show.”

Priorities, people.
