I took four years of Spanish in high school, and I learned nothing (sorry teachers!) — but even I could tell how bad Willam’s accent was in this song. Yes, it’s a parody; but try a little harder, gurl.

I think part of the parody is that his Spanish is intentionally bad. Think about how many pop stars have put out Spanish-language versions of their songs just to get crossover money from Latino audiences, as if the mere of act of trying to do something in a different language should be enough. Or how many pop songs have treated Hispanic culture as something exotic and mystical simply based on the fact that the people aren’t white? The difference here, I think, is that Willam is being intentionally awful to make a point. He’d probably be the first to admit that the Spanish is bad and the whole thing is cheesy. It’s true satire, and I love it.
