It would have been very easy for Dina Matos (nee McGreevey) to become a gay icon. After all, there she was in 2004, standing by her gay American husband after he came out amidst affair allegations. And while Jim McGreevey has gone to enjoy some peace and happiness, Matos decided she would instead become a fire breathing dragon and hate all things gay. Like her ex-husband. And now, gay marriage.
The former first lady of New Jersey applauded the State Senate’s shooting down of gay marriage this month, pointing to her Catholic upbringing as the reason why she’ll support civil unions, but draws the line at the M-word. “We have the civil union law in place, which I think is wonderful,” she told a Zonta Club crowd. “I was raised a Catholic. I grew up in the church, so I believe in traditional marriage between a man and a woman.”
Not to poke fun at the gal, because once upon a time we felt terribly sorry for her, but what she’s doing here is supporting an institution that she herself engaged in … with a gay man.

Hey Dina, if civil unions are so “wonderful,” let’s switch.
Same Crap
Hell hath no fury…
Her husband was a scumbag, and she should take her frustrations out on him.

Well it would take a power hungry, repressed gay man to marry her. Too bad Christie’s taken.

I guess it is in the Bible to sleep around with other men after meeting them at Applebee’s for drinks with your gay husband. Oh wait, that’s not in the Bible either.
Still I get why she is doing this, but she’s more an embarrassment now than she ever was before today.
AlwaysGay
I knew she was bitter from day one. I don’t care and I don’t care how many gay men she has married. When gay people who are surrounded by heterosexuals from day one are told in various ways by heterosexuals that being gay is wrong and heterosexuality is the only way you get situations like Jim McGreevey and Ted Haggard pretending to be heterosexuals.

I always object to the term “gay” when applied to peeps/perps like Jim McSkeevey.
He was has two children, presumably the result of sex with his wife. One may also presume they had other instances of sexual relations over their eight-year lovefest.
Folks who have occasional, consensual sex with both sexes are BISEXUAL. They may lean one way or another, split their M/F lovemaking 50/50, 70/30, 90/10 or 10/90, but they are undeniably bisexual.
I played “show-me” with a girl when I was nine, had some drunk lip locks in bars, but I still feel that “gay” suits me as a moniker. Just as there are many hot, proud and fierce self-identified bisexuals.
I’m afraid, Queerty editors, that Jim’s “gay” card was revoked some time ago.

@zenflo:
Don’t confuse bisexual behavior with bisexual identity. Many “now” gay and lesbian folks had “hetero sex” while younger, but would never consider themselves bisexual.
zenflo
@Qjersey: I fully support the right of people to “consider” themselves whatever they like, or “assume” any identity that makes them more comfortable.
However, just because folks who have enjoyed M-F sex on a quasi-regular basis have made a conscious decision to pursue a same-sex path at age 20, 30 or 80 doen’t make them any less bisexual, in my book.
zenflo
@zenflo: “Doesn’t.”
Also, can Queerty add a [email protected]zenflo: check to this site if I agree to go to Saint Lucia with the very het couple on that annoying pop-up?
zenflo
@zenflo: Oh, poop.
Qjersey
@Qjersey:
and lets not get started on those who insist they are bi (to avoid the stigma of being a full on homo) even though they haven’t had heterosex in years, e.g., a friend of mine who always loudly proclaims he is bi because he had a girlfriend for a few years, but hasn’t touched a women in over a decade.
zenflo
@Qjersey: Yes, indeed it is a sword that cuts both ways. (Normally, of course, I rather like swords — the peaceful kind.)

Nitpicky as it is, Dina Matos was not née McGreevey. In French, “née” is the feminine form of the past participle of the verb “to be born.” So, because she was married to Jim McGreevey and took his last name at marriage, she wasn’t born McGreevey. If her maiden name is Matos, then she would be Dina McGreevey (née Matos). If she changed back to her maiden name after she divorced Jim, then it should probably read “Dina Matos, formerly Dina McGreevey.” And to be honest, I care more about grammar than this woman.

a Maggie Gallagher in training for sure…

Doesn’t the Catholic Church also frown on divorce? If she adhered to her faith, she would have stood by Jim regardless of his sexual orientation.
She’s a huge hypocrite.

This is the same idiot who had a very nice evening with her limo driver and husband huh? were you a Catholic you old hag or were you channeling your “bible thumper only when it suits me” Carrie Prejean?
It makes me happy your man left you for another man and that’s something you’ll have to live with for the rest of your life.
Everyone knows, guys know how to please and be companions better.

It sounds like Zenflo thinks he gets to decide who’s “gay card” gets revoked or not. What a pompous ass. Validate this.

Compare Dina Matos with the wife of UK soccer star Gareth.
When Mr Footballer came out, the latter lady had nothing but nice things to say about him and spoke openly with the gay press about their continuing friendship and her attitude toward gays, etc.
She f’ing supported him through his coming out process. McGrody’s wife has turned bitter and cheap like boxed wine left in the back of a pickup truck. And yet, she hews to her deep faith in her Church—without which ole Jimbo might have come out before marrying her and getting the family’s photos plastered all over the news.
Hatred breeds hatred. Period.
zenflo
@Kieran: Instead, why not spend just a moment of your invaluable time on the logic of the point addressed in no. 8.
zenflo
@zenflo: And how do you feel about paragraph 3 in no.6? I am breathless with anticipation.
Most sentient contributors to this thread understand that we are sharing opinions, usually a mix of personal experiences and a myriad of “factual” sources.
Lastly — for I am done with you — when you call someone names, as in your charming use of “pompous ass,” you simply assume those traits yourself.
