Jodie Foster: Mel Gibson ‘Has Troubles’ But ‘God, I Love That Man’

He’s so incredibly loving and sensitive, he really is. He is the most loved actor I have ever worked with on a movie. And he’s not saintly, and he’s got a big mouth, and he’ll do gross things your nephew would do. But I knew the minute I met him that I would love him the rest of my life. I know him in a very complex way. He’s a real person; he’s not a cardboard cutout. I know that he has troubles, and when you love somebody you don’t just walk away from them when they are struggling. … God, I love that man. The performance he gave in this movie, I will always be grateful for. He brought a lifetime of pain to the character that we’ve been talking about for years, that I knew was part of his psyche and who he is. It’s part of him that is beautiful and that I want people to know, too. I can’t ever regret that.

—Jodie Foster once again defending Mel Gibson, her co-star in The Beaver, which premieres today at SXSW. As for her involvement in child rapist Roman Polanski’s film Carnage? “That’s not my business,” says Foster, always finding excuses to work with monsters. [via]

      So much “love” for a racist, homophobic, sexist asshole. Doesn’t speak very well of her.

      She was always Been like that.

      Do we know HER?

      Has she EVER come out ala Degeneres?

      She could’ve really helped the cause…she doesn’t give any money-just look at the gay orgs donors…and refuses to say she is gay. Nasty piece or work.

      @~PR~: I’m almost amused by your characterization of Gibson’s chronic sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and domestic abuse as “warts.” Do you not recognize any threshold at all? Any point at which someone’s behavior becomes so reprehensible, so obviously wrong, that it’s not some momentary failing or episode of weakness on their part but a permanent pattern?

      Oh Please, she knows that if people stay away from her movie, and it tanks it hurts her ability to work and get projects done in Hollywood. She is defending him in hopes that her movie doesn’t suffer at the box office most likely.

    • ~PR~

      @Halloween Jack: I’m not saying his behavior is acceptable, I am saying that friends have that RIGHT and CHOICE to remain friends with people even when it is discovered they are lowlife scum. She had a relationship with him well before his scandals hit the airwaves so it doesn’t shock me at all that she’d still stand by his side even as the nasty stuff about him continues to surface. This is her choice and personally, I admire her for it. (Besides, how can you expect a negative person to change if EVERYONE turns their back on him?)

      @Halloween Jack:

      Wart: any unattractive detrimental feature or aspect (Note that this isn’t literal, more figurative… and also a cliche’)
      homophobia, sexism, anti-semstism, and domestic abuse are just a few of many warts that corrupt the surface of our society. And good ol’ Mel isn’t the only one who displays such behavior. I’ve seen it everywhere, often times coming from the most unexpected sources.

      Maybe Jodie’s good buddy, Mel Gibson, says things and behaves in ways Jodie can only dream of?

      She’s living vicariously through the Douchebag of Serra Retreat?

      In any case, if Jodie Foster keeps flapping her piehole, praising the racist, anti-Semitic and antigay Mel Gibson, she could find herself ostracized in Hollywood, as people in the “biz” decide to avoid her.

      LA is a small town and you’re known by the company you keep.

      Her life and friends are her business, not ours. Nothing worse than stars, gay or straight, parading their personal lives, children, surrogate children, relationships, etc. for the world to consume. Actors should do their jobs like the rest of us and live their personal lives in private. They owe us nothing other than a good performance on screen or stage, nothing more. The fact that she hasn’t stood up on a gay pulpit and make pronouncements on her orientation is fine. Face it, all of the performers that have done so have had their hands forced or are washed up, all of them.

      @Pell: Neil Patrick Harris didn’t have his hand forced and he is far, far from washed up. Sir Elton wrote the music for Lion King long after he came out and he’s made enough money on that alone to pay off the US national debt.

      @justiceontherocks: The fear of coming out, rational or not, is what ultimately holds people back. How long did it take you and countless others to come out to their families? The times are varied. Some don’t come out at all. The point is that it is a comfort thing and a personal thing. It is the person’s choice to come out. If she is not ready, leave it be. You wouldn’t put the same amount of pressure on a random person walking on the street, would you? How about a coworker? There is more to coming out than public recognition… there are more people affected than just the star doing so. If she or they feel it is a delicate personal matter, so be it. I won’t lose sleep over any celebrity opting to stay in the closet. I’d rather focus my energy on things that I actually have some control or power over.

      @~PR~: I don’t care what she does. i was responding to a poster who suggested that every entertainer who came out was either forced out or over the hill by pointing to two very successful people for whom that was not true. It’s not necessarily a career killer like some claim.

      As for Jodie, what she does is her business.

      Mel Gibson skipped today’s premiere of “The Beaver.”

      Now what kind of BFF would sacrifice their co-star to attend the premiere of what many critics are calling “one of the strangest movies ever made” and not be there for moral support?

      Oh yeah: the Mel Gibson kind of BFF. You’re an idiot, Jodie.

      Queerty, quit being a fucking bitch. This article is tabloid trash, stripping a complex story down to an overly simplistic, emotionally manipulative rant that aims to rile people up and push their buttons. There’s an almost frightening lack of compassion in the gay community sometimes – and an eagerness to trample over people while they’re down. Say what you want about the fact that she keeps her private life private, but this is a lady who thinks that supporting a guy who is clearly troubled is a better thing to do than tearing him down. It’s what good people do – help people. It takes guts to defend someone that everyone else is hating on. Thank fuck not everyone is as judgmental and vengeful as Queerty. I’m going to copy and past this comment I read on Deadline, as I think it highlights just how incorrect and bitchy this article is.

      “If only if all of us can have just one friend like Jodie Foster, her unwavering loyalty, true love for her friend, and the ability to think independently on her own…is very admirable, and we would be rich with just one person like her in our lives. To think on your own, and stand your ground on what is right is not always popular, but we all must be true to ourselves or else follow the herd of cows infront… Every life picture is always “gray”, the reality is never black or white. Look for the good in people and you will find it.

      @Pell: You don’t know that he was about to be outed. We know there were rumors, but there had been rumors for years. You also don’t know that he won’t land another role similar to the one he now has. Successful as that show has been, and the way the TV business is, he can probably write his own ticket.

      The point remains that there are at least two big time stars who thrived after coming out.

      @james_from_cambridge: According to the medical examiner’s report (LONG available on snopes) he did not anally rape her. The “rape” as such was satuetory.

      Anyhoo Jode should be happy to be cast in anything at all as her years of stardom have long past.

      Why she hasn’t come out can be partially explained by Hinckley. He stalked her during her college years. Discovering seh was a lesbian he elected to assasiinate Ronald Reagn to make her fall in love with him and thus go straight.

      Didn’t exactly work out did it?

      I can, to a degree, understand how the whole horrid affair made her shy of coming out.

      What’ I CAN’T understand is her friendship with the loathesome Gibson.

      Jodie is in a glass closet, but it is indeed her business whether or not she comes out. But if she thinks staying in the closet is saving her career, she’s sadly mistaken, as she has long been washed up.

      However, I cannot fathom why she or anyone would be friends with Mel Gibson. He is a homophobic, anti- semitic, racist asshole who should be locked up somewhere because he is insane.

      One would imagine that having famously portrayed the role of a victim of a violent rape whose perpetrators escaped justice, Ms Foster might have some qualms associating with a real-life rapist who escaped justice.

      I used to find a lot to like about Jodie Foster. Turns out, she’s just another a soulless, venal asshole with a pretty face.

    • the crustybastard

      @David Ehrenstein:

      Polanski KNOWINGLY plied a 13-year-old girl with champagne and quaaludes, then he raped her semi-conscious body. All this he conceded when he copped a plea in a deal proposed by the victim’s mother.

      “The grand jury charged Polanski with giving a drug to a minor, committing a lewd act upon a person less than 14, rape of a minor, rape by use of a drug, oral copulation and sodomy. All the charges are felonies.” The Washington Post, 26 March 1977

      That means that the grand jury, having reviewed ALL the prosecution’s evidence, agreed it was sufficient. The medical examiner’s report is only one piece of evidence.

      The plea deal was that the state would not prosecute those charges in exchange for Polanski’s guilty plea on the charge of Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a Minor (what California calls statutory rape).

      The fact that he copped a plea only means he was convicted of statutory rape. It does not mean Polanski was acquitted of the other charges. He didn’t even attempt to exonerate himself in court of those charges, and I have no doubt he committed every one of them.

      Just because Polanski beat the system doesn’t mean he didn’t do it. (See also, O.J. Simpson).

      @David Ehrenstein: What Crusty said above. He did absolutely anally sodomize her once he made sure she was passed out. And she was fuggin’ 13 years old! Could you have handled that when you were 13? Stop making excuses for an absolute dirtbag!

      Mar 17, 2011 at 3:54 pm · @ReplyReply to this comment ·
    • the crustybastard

      Point of fact: according to the victim’s testimony, she was not unconscious when Polanski raped her. She admitted she was intoxicated and not fully lucid. She knew what he was doing and told him to stop several times.

      @David Ehrenstein:

      Your “citation” is bogus. There is no medical examiner’s report from the Polanski case available on Snopes. I searched using both the defendant’s and the victim’s name.

      If you have indeed worked as a professional journalist (as you claim on your website), you ought to know that was a sleazy, disreputable, unethical thing to do.

      Shame on you.

      @Right Wingers Are Socioptahs (John From England) While your opinion is appreciated your facts as to Ms Foster not providing money or support to any gay organization is false. Ms Foster is and has been and active donor to the Trevor Project. Perhaps she is of the simple faith that who you are is best proved by deed rather than words. This woman has given far more than you and I will ever know to promote the causes for humanity we say we so deeply believe in…she just is who she is minus all the stupid need for attention that we all seem to think makes us a more valid and united community. You may not like her…but frankly, who gives a damn.
