John Gibson Apologizes For Ledger Remarks

By Andrew Belonsky January 25, 2008 at 8:01am · 22 comments

GLAAD got their wish. Fox News man John Gibson apologizes for his offensive, crude and just plain tacky comments on Heath Ledger. Watch the video after the jump.

Wow. Gibson almost sort of seems human. Almost.

He only apologizes for “offending” people. This is not truly an apology for the inappropriateness of his behavior.

Exactly. He didn’t apologize for what he said, he didn’t say his comments were offensive, just that he was sorry people found them offensive.

    Yep. The “apologetic-Sounding non-apology”; Watergate crook H.R. Halderman’s “limited-hangout” still lives.
Gibson’ll do it again. And if it hadn’t been Gibson & Fred Phelps and his wife, it would have Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Pat Robertson, Imus or maybe even Stern. The snarling dogs of the right-wing were not about to contain themselves when the left loses a beloved icon, even one so tragically and of a mere 28 years. You don’t MATTER, John Gibson, you don’t matter.

oh please. he said he was sorry. move on, people. there’s nothing to see here.

Heath Ledger is an icon of the Left?

I wasn’t aware that Ledger even had citizenship, much less a strong political stance.

That apology is like an apology after you run over someone’s dog and it goes like this:

“I’m sorry your dog was out on the street when I when I was driving on the street and it got run over by my car.”

That’s no apology at all. I think people don’t know what “apology” means.

    I apologize for writing this.

When Imus called the ball players “nappy headed hos” he was fired. But when a person makes inappropriate comments directly or indirectly about gay people there are little to no consequences.
His comments about Heath were because he played a “gay” character in a movie. And to MR. HEllS KITCHEN, your comment to
“Just Move On” shows why gay rights in America are so slow to move forward. It is an attitude of passivity that would be unacceptable in any other minority group. If we are unwilling to stand up and fight for ourselves then how can we expect others to stand up with us? But then I suspect your really not one of us anyway.

He’s no better than Ann Coulter. I try to give both no attention. What a punk!

    “your comment to
“Just Move On” shows why gay rights in America are so slow to move forward. It is an attitude of passivity that would be unacceptable in any other minority group.”

And your comment shows exactly why our movement is bogged down in celebrity worship. Believe it or not, I think there are more urgent issues than whether some asshole on Fox disses an actor who happened to have once played a role in a film as a homosexual.

Maybe you can get as riled about:
    state DOMA amendments
AIDS rise in youth, minority populations
    Bullying of gay students

For starters.”Let the dead bury their dead.” – Jesus Christ.

    January 25, 2008 at 2:01pm
  • hells kitchen guy

Oh, and it’s “you’re not one of us.” “not “your not one of us.”

    January 25, 2008 at 2:01pm
  • Gay as life

This is not about celebrity worship. Gibson used this as an opportunity to display abundant homophobia. In a way, I’m glad that America is seeing a clear picture of how blatant one man’s hatred of gays can be – that he can dehumanize another person simply because that person appeared in a “gay” film.

But there is no reason to “just move on” and forget about it.

    January 25, 2008 at 3:01pm
  • hells kitchen guy

I guess I just think that Gibson is a generic asshole who would use anything crass to try to be funny by his standards. I don’t think he really cared about the gay stuff — he was just being his normally awful self.

that was no apology, it was an i’m sorry you were offended. he didn’t apologize for saying what he said and he didn’t take it back. fox news people never apologize.

Why even watch Fox? Are you all that homebound and poor?

Seitan: Don’t look at me. I don’t even have TV reception. Biggest waste of time on the planet.

I’m still working on everything I can to get this man removed.
Fox is supposed to be of a reputable corporation in which he has masses of people who pay attention.
The highest rate in this country of suicide is amongst teenagers and the number one group are gays and lesbians with fear of being ceasing them embracing who they are.
How many more Matthew Sheperhs have to be murderedd by homophobes?
How many more will take their lives because of fear pertuated by people such as Gibson who enable and foster an environment which tells these young ones that they are not created in the Image of God and therefore do not belong.
All that is the underlying theme’s in comments such as Gisbon’s. When Suzanne Phelzette died earlier in the week, did he laugh? No.
I have written 30 letters as of today to Fox news and have started a mass campagain and will not quit.
I am a gay Christian. I say this because many people such as Phelps are saying God hates fags.
If anyone beleives God who is love has any hate, then they truly do not know God. They preach of themselves, making their own image God.
Yes, I preach at all the young that God loves you, no matter who or what you are because He created you in your image and you are thereby blessed with dignity.
As Maya Angelou says, and I subsribe to this believe, “There is no gay agenda, or African American agenda, or Women’s agenda. There is only the human agenda.”
This can not be ignored or moved on (which means move away implied by one writer here), this must be upheld. If not, how many more will die?
And that is not me being a dramatic queen. That is me being one who is informed and realistic. I celebrate life everday given the blessings bestowed by God. How many have taken their lives in fear of living in a world perpetrated such as Gibson subscribes too. Shame on Fox if they not remove him. Shame.

My guess is that most of the folks here do not watch FOX news. That still does not mean that we should not react to this homophobia. Ignoring Gibson will not make him simply go away.

And Seitan – If my comments are such a waste of your time then just scroll your bad-ass right on by without reading them. Maybe then you won’t be so whiny.

GAY AS LIFE: I agree with you. Yet, I do watch news and have now switched. I do think many here probably caught this story not by way of watching while it happened but after the story broke. I used to love Fox and Friends in the morning. Not so heavy as in a constant. But never this moron after the opening of Brokeback.
I also have to agree with GAY AS LIFE regarding SEITAN. Seitan, your statement gives the implication that if one watches the news, they are houebound and of a poor economic background. Well, I am neither as most here proabably are not; just a bunch of people who wish to keep up with what is happening and to stay enlightened. I do not mean to suggeset that one needs to watch the news for hours. But one must keep informed. As I said in previous message, I will do all I can to get the man removed. And I usually win. I have had profound results because I believe in the power of numbers. If we ignore this man, and others such as Phelps, then more and more of our youth with remain in the closet leading lives of lies, fear, dread, and uphold the highest level of suicide. I can’t watch anyone else die. None of us should when each of us can take the time to write here, we can also take the time to be contructive and persistent in seeking a place where our youth can be free and not wake in dreaded fear.
    Peace to all.

    Just an FYI, this link

    http://skinthefox.com/sponsors_001.htm

Lists the Fox corporate sponsers. It took me about 15 minutes to pop off an email to those on the list. Amazingly enough Amex got back to me. Must be those two cards I mentioned I have.
