Self-defense. That’s what 16-year-old John Katehis is using as a defense to explain the repeated stab wounds that killed George Weber. And now that Katehis is appearing in court, the (more) gruesome details are unfolding.
With Katehis’ father crying in the courtroom Friday for a preliminary hearing, the defendant’s lawyer Jeffrey Schwartz told the court about all the things Weber did to his client. “It seems that Mr. Weber had this whole secret life that no one knew about,” Schwartz says. “He lured John Katehis into his home. He plied him with alcohol and illegal drugs.”
Acknowledging Katehis went to Weber’s home to perform sex acts in exchange for $60, Schwartz is arguing it was Weber who plied him with alcohol and cocaine and “attempted to get him to do, some sadomasochistic sex to him. Um, the situation got out of control.”
And as Katehis put in his own words: “I didn’t mean to kill George. It was an accident. He pulled a knife on me, so I stabbed him. He gave me something to drink and some coke. He asked me to do things I wasn’t comfortable with.”

This kid may have stated in his craigslist profile that he was 18, but I don’t for one minute believe George Weber believed that. When playing out roles, people buy into whatever fantasy scenario gets them off. He wanted young hard cock, and he was willing to take a risk for it.

Indeed, it does. I once ingested cocaine without knowing it (I would never knowingly use it, because I’ve seen what it does to people) after some seriously heavy drinking and marijuana use (neither of which have ever done anything except make me cheerful and relaxed) and, after coming out of a blackout, proceeded to go totally apeshit in the middle of a crowded party. The difference in my case is that, rather than attack others, I went after myself. I was bashing myself in the head with bottles attempting to break them, and then I tried to cut open my wrists with a butter knife. Fortunately, my friends stepped in and put a stop to what was a completely novel situation for them. I did not find out until the next day that cocaine had been involved, and that was the only new factor in the equation. I was a notorious partier at that time, and had never had anything remotely resembling the freakout I had that night.

A pedophile is someone who sexually molests pre-pubescent children. Obviously, that is not the case here, and those that have problems with the age difference are being homophobic. In the straight world this wouldn’t even be an issue for most people. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones (25 years difference), for example. But make the older man gay and suddenly he’s a pedophile. Christopher Isherwood met Don Bachardy (32 years difference), his partner of almost 40 years, when Bachardy was 16, but they didn’t have a sexual relationship until Bachardy was 18. Based on this brief article, the trial is going to go as I had expected: claiming self-defense and putting the blame on the victim for his “secret lifestyle” and taste for freaky sex. If police start bringing up any evidence from Weber’s computer that hints at other Craigslist Connnections, I feel it’s likely Katehis will walk.
Neither party is innocent in this case. Katehis is probably crazy and I haven’t heard an explanation from the killer or the weeping father explaining why/how he found himself in the situation to begin with, or what he was expecting. He may have been underage, but he lied and there are plenty of high school students who can pass for 18 or older. As an example, the NBA player Greg Oden looked like he was in his 30s before graduating high school. There was a story here a few weeks ago about girls in high school getting busted drinking in a gay bar that their teacher took them to.
As was debated at the time of the crime, Weber should have taken better precautions to insure his safety. I’d argue that putting coke into the mix was a bad idea. Sometimes our desire for sex leads us to make poor choices, especially if we are fully or semi-closeted, as Weber seemed to be. Maybe a hotel room is a better bet for random/risky encounters. Isn’t that how they caught the Craiglist killer in Massachusetts?

I gotta agree with Lex on this as well. Regardless of age, this crime was avoidable. As discussed in previous threads about this case, S&M is not something you want to engage in casually via a craigslist encounter. Also, crazy drinking and drug use while mixed with weapons and sex is also a terrible idea – especially with a stranger. Mr. Weber was a consenting adult who put his life on the line by engaging in risky sex with strangers. He paid the ultimate price with his life. This teenager needs to pay with his life as well with a lengthy prison term. Stabbing somebody 50 times doesn’t satisfy the self defense argument. Both subjects are guilty here.

1. Webber was physically nearly twice the size of this kid.
2. No one else was present but them.
After reading the ad Webber placed on Craigslist he clearly had a fantasy about being murdered and went out looking for his whale. He found it and it destroyed him. I find it very hard to believe Webber had not placed ads like that before. This case reminds me of a good friend of mine in Calif. who was murdered back in the early 80’s.
Even though he was a professor at UCLA, very nice living complete with very comfortable surroundings he HAD to go to downtown L.A. or Santa Monica blvd. and pick up crackheads and other “downtown” types and take them home for rough sexual romps. I heard when they found him he was bound with duct tape and a rope around his neck. This man had a collection of photo’s of him and his pick-ups in various sexual poses and acts. That played a large part in the defense of his killer who got off with less than three years because he said they used drugs and he passed out and woke up and the guy was dead. Never mind he walked off with the guys car and several other household items and left the body for the roommate of the deceased to discover.
Personally I leave anonymous sex to the bathhouse. It is much safer than inviting a total stranger into your home and offering drugs, alcohol, sex and then the promise of being paid afterwards. I have heard many stories about men being held up, beat up and in some cases even stalked by these chance encounters who “renegotiated” the price after the “climactic” moment. I would not be surprised if the number of robberies via of Craiglist hook-ups is in the thousands. I do not hold Craigslist responsible because they are doing nothing illegal. They can not control the actions of the people who place or respond to these ads.
This case means absolutely nothing as far as instilling common sense in those who use this avenue looking for sexual pleasure.

Even though I do look at the pic spreads featured here I see very lonely, stuck on themselves children who are going to have a very hard time adjusting to life once they reach 40. 40 is generally the age when you can no longer hide YOU ARE NOW A MATURE LOOKING ADULT. In their minds they can accept their bodies but not their age. For the next ten years now comes technique after technique to get rid of the naturally occuring maturing body. Liposuction, cosmetic surgery, pectoral implants, etc…etc.
Two years ago right after poor Michael Sandy was chased to his death on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn and dragged back onto the grass by his killers an internet dating advice seminar was held at the gay center. Though I had no intentions (and still don’t) of hooking up with a date that way I went just to show some form of support for that poor kid especially after how crass his killers were. All of 8 people showed up for it. None asked questions after the speaker was finished. I hope none later had encounters that they now wished they had spoke up when they had the chance.

As far as this case, the only witness we have is a murderer who stabbed a person 50 times. Is his opinion all that important? We don’t know who got him drunk, who gave him drugs, what his age was in the ad. We do know a nutjob killed someone and is going where he belongs–eventually.

The hope of the defense attorney is that the jury will not step away long enough to understand the bigger picture. Above, I use Rodney King because this is precisely what happened in that trial. The jury was told to ignore the video’s overall point to then look at it from the angle of the cops , but in such a way that ignored the video evidence. The same is happening here. We are suppose to pretend that this kid did not go over the man’s house, that the kid had not been planning such an act for some time and that the kid did not stab the man 50 times. The nature of self defense is that one must use necessary force. I am at a lost to understand how they are going to argue that stabbing the man 50 times was necessary force.

In this case, one was an adult and the other was not. In the eyes of the law “children” are often treated differently especially if they are given alcohol and drugs from an adult. I have a feeling by the time this all over Katehis is going to end up looking more like the victim. What he did was wrong, but Weber also has to be held accountable for his crimes towards a youth. He certainly didn’t deserve to be murdered, but if he had acted like an adult this probably wouldn’t have happened.
As for Katehis saying he was 18 that isn’t going to hold up. There is a reason bars are told to card people who look under 30. It’s because you can’t trust what someone says or how they look. I know I have younger guys hit on me online and if I see their pic and they look on the younger side I just stay away. No need to get into any trouble.

It is terrible that Weber was murdered, especially in what appears to have been such a gruesome manner.
It’s also terrible that Katehis was living in a mental place, at the age of 16 no less, where he felt so violent and homicidal. I don’t care who he killed, his life was destroyed by what he did…if not by being sent to prison (the death penalty will almost definitely not happen), then by the memory of what he did. Maybe he is a sociopath and won’t care, but he probably will. Sociopaths tend to be smarter, and not get caught for a good while.
People like to think that people who commit murders like this don’t have feelings anyways, that someone who thinks or feels like we do wouldn’t really ever do that. But the truth is that any of us could, given the proper circumstances, do what Katehis did, and the fact that those proper circumstances existed in his own life is truly tragic.
I pity everyone involved, and hope, whether in a prison cell, or in the years after he goes free, that Katehis confronts this, and can forgive himself for what he’s done. Then maybe he can begin to take responsibility, and can be forgiven by those whose lives he has changed.
Unfortunately, however, this is all wishful thinking. But none of it will ever be a reality if we continue to vilify people for what they’ve done, instead of asking why, and trying to work toward fixing those circumstances that led to such tragedies in the first place. If we never learn from their monsters, we can expect more to come.
