Jonathan Groff, best known for his roles in Broadway’s Spring Awakening and TV’s Glee as Zachary Quinto‘s real-life boyfriend, has been added to the star-studded cast of HBO’s upcoming film version of The Normal Heart.
Ryan Murphy will direct the long-awaited adaptation of Larry Kramer‘s scorching play from 1985 about the early years of the AIDS epidemic in New York and has already cast such heavyweights as Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo, Jim Parsons and Matt Bomer.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Groff will play “Craig, an early victim of the disease.” His boyfriend will portrayed by Taylor Kitsch (last year’s next big thing which didn’t happen) whose character is an investment banker who eventually becomes an AIDS activist.
HBO plans to premiere the film sometime in 2014.
How about we take this to the next level?

Such a wonderful play.

I’m so glad Jim Parsons is going to be in it. And Matt Bomer, of course. 😀
It looks like there’ll be more openly gay principle actors in it than straight ones.
Which is neither here nor there, but, still, a good sign.
Let’s hope it’s a bit more subtle than Ryan Murphy’s work up to now.

@Lefty: Have you read or seen “the normal heart?” Larry Kramer’s writing faaaaaaaaaaaar from subtle.

@QJ201: I agree. Kramer uses a sledge hammer when a simple ball peen hammer would do.

@QJ201: I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t.

Why is this news? It only proves that gays can only have AIDS…and do nothing else…This will just line the pockets of the Gay Republican types…..nothing more…

Other country’s films of gay life have moved past this…..

20 years to produce the Normal Heart is all “symbolic gesture” by now…And the Emmys will naturally throw them a bag of awards to show they care…. .
