Joran van der Sloot, the micropenis who admitted in June to murdering Peruvian lesbian Stephany Flores Ramirez, is pulling a temporary insanity defense in the hopes of keeping his jail sentence short. If his “violent emotion” gambit works he could serve 3-5 years, or perhaps just 20 months if he’s paroled, instead of 15-35 years for the first-degree murder charge.

Here is a perfect example of why I cannot completely abandon my support for the death penalty.
Some people are so malignantly and pathologically predatory that NOBODY can ever be safe around them — including prison workers and fellow prisoners.
What’s more, these people offer exactly ZERO benefit to society. None. (In van der Sloot’s case, I’d remind readers that having narrowly gotten away with one murder, as a free man he subsequently attempted to extort his victim’s parents, then brutally murdered another woman.) Therefore, a basic risk/benefit analysis strongly advises against permitting people like van der Sloot to continue breathing.
However, at most he’ll do 30 years; which means he’d be released — at the latest — at age 54.

The Peruvian state prisons are said to be among the worst in the world.
My guess is, once convicted and incarcerated, and without his rich, well-connected Papi to save his ass, van Der Sloot will receive the Jeffrey Dahmer treatment and the world, in my view, will be a better place.

I sure hope that Peru’s laws about insanity defenses are similar to most US states: just because someone is mentally ill is not the issue, rather, the issue is whether the person can distinguish between right and wrong. Van der Soot’s actions following the murder certainly seem to indicate that he knew he committed a crime. Rot in prison and then in hell — pure evil.

MikeIn Asheville : They can say “he’s hawt” if they want. There are lots of criminals who are physically attractive. That doesn’t mean those who like him physically don’t think he’s a horrible person or don’t want him to go to prison. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

You have only to look at his eyes to realize that he is lost to all decency. Those cold lifeless staring orbs tell you that his humanity is gone. He obviously knew right from wrong and chose to murder someone in cold blood. He should spend the rest of his life in prison. One does have to worry about what will happen to him there. I suspect he will be further dehumanized.
