“Kevin was an inestimable comfort and never mentioned he knew I was in a bad way.
He cheered me up and kept me going.
I can’t approve, in any way, of the fact that – whatever he has done – that you then start to cut him out of films.
Are we to go back throughout history and anyone who has misbehaved in any way, or who has broken the law, or who has committed some kind of offense, are they always going to be cut out?
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Are we going to extrude them from our history? I don’t know about the conditions of it, but nevertheless he is, and was, a most wonderful actor. And a good friend. I can’t imagine what he’s doing now.”— Dame Judi Dench speaking to a press conference at the San Sebastien International Film Festival in Spain. Dench and Spacey costarred in The Shipping News (2001), filmed shortly after the death of Dench’s husband. Spacey was famously edited out of Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World following multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.

Gotta admit, she makes a good point.
DCguy
Except no she doesn’t.
Rugby8
Yes she Does

Brent Kavanaugh says hello.
Bromancer7
I’m not saying he’s innocent. I completely believe the allegations against him. But does that mean we go back and shelve every movie and TV show he’s ever made? Wipe his existence from history? That’s the part she says that I agree with. It makes no sense and serves no useful purpose.
QueerTruth
“Are we to go back throughout history and anyone who has misbehaved in any way, or who has broken the law, or who has committed some kind of offense, are they always going to be cut out?”
No. That’s not what happened.
Multiple men came forward to discuss how they were sexually assaulted or molested by a living actor.
She has no point.
You can support your friend. But you don’t defend criminal activity. Period.
DCguy
What a shock, somebody 1000 years old sees the abuser as the victim because he’s an “Artist”.
Unless she feels that every barrista who whips up a great Latte should also be exempt from criminal charges I don’t want to hear it.
Rugby8
Of what gay crime was Spacey convicted? In which court? To which witnesses have you spoken?
Rugby8
Exactly who did he abuse?
DCguy
Wow, what a vociferous defense. If Spacey is so “Innocent” then please point out where he has sued for defamation, AND you may want to explain why he is under criminal investigation in the UK.
Oh, and if you’re trying to pretend not to be an outside troll you may want to not use the word “Gay” as a descriptor, people who belong on an LGBT site are able to infer whats going on.
Doug
1000 years old? Ageism continues to exist on Queerty. How old are you, DCGuy, about 12?
Polaro
Innocent until proven guilty – not our burden to prove him innocent. That said, I believe Mr. Spacey did use his influence and power corruptly and for sexual gratification from the unwilling. Is he facing a criminal charge? I don’t know, but it would not surprise me. Until then, I’ll keep my powder dry.
StraightnNarrow
I totally agree with Dame Dench. Kevin Spacey has been punished enough for some of his youthful indiscretions. Let bygones be bygones and let this excellent actor act again. Despite their belief that they are more tolerant than the conservatives, all the judgmental liberals have little tolerance at all in their bone, just like their conservative counterparts.
little Alex
Yes, how intolerant of us liberals, condemning an admitted child molester.
DCguy
What a shock, the same screename that has supported anti-LGBT bigots, also defends a child molester.
gaym50ish
Youthful indiscretions? Some of the 15 accusers cite incidents as recent as 2008 and 2010. Spacey was hardly “youthful” then.
It’s really not personal with movie producers and directors. It’s strictly box-office concerns.
OzJosh
Dame Judy. Not “Dame Dench”
StraightnNarrow
Thank you Josh. I stand corrected.
Polaro
Admitted child molester is not an accurate statement. What Anthony Rapp describes is troubling, but did not cross criminal lines as best I can tell. Spacey’s later, more recent behavior is allegedly much worse and potentially criminal.
Dame Judy describes the paradox that many people have with people they know, whom they like, when it is revealed they have behaved badly in private. Real life is often more complicated than the one-dimensional, terribly-written stories on the Internet.
Sam6969
On a side note, I am curious to know why it is better to say: “Dame Judi” rather than: “Dame Dench”?
I read many times: “Dame Andrews” (For Dame Julie Andrews) and: “Dame Bassey” (for Dame Shirley Bassey) and just occasionally: “Dame Dench” (more often: “Dame Judi”). Why is that?
QueerTruth
LMAO. That’s laughable. Bygones be bygones…
I feel sad for you. It must be very painful to live with these fictional thoughts in your head.
DCguy
Hey Right wing accounts. Look, we get it, you hate women, you support sexual assault and child molesting is your thing.
No shock you’re all supporting Spacey.
StraightnNarrow
Chill out DCguy. You are getting too paranoiac. It doesn’t help your claims when you are so off base and irrational.
Curtispsf
Yeah, chill with your hyperboles, DCguy. It’s very unbecoming.
DCguy
Thanks for responding and pointing out just which accounts support child molesting. No surprise it’s two of the same accounts that always take the side of anti-LGBT bigots.
surfpenis
Who is Kevin Spacey?
Curtispsf
Good for Dench for sticking up for Spacey. I absolutely abhor the regressive effort to erase the work of anyone who has “transgressed”. Judge him for how he’s behaved, but don’t erase him from history. Otherwise we’ll be erasing such notables as Joan Crawford, Betty Davis, Gary Cooper, Mel Gibson, Marilyn Monroe, Spencer Davis….I could go on and on and on. I personally believe in redemption. It also makes for a great story.
Chrisk
No one’s erasing his work. He just can’t do any more future projects because no studio will ever take a chance on him again.
OzJosh
Exactly how is replacing an already filmed, edited and post-produced performance with that of another actor NOT erasing him?!
Chrisk
His movie the Billionaire boys club was a huge flop and only made $126 on opening day. Producers only care about the $ and Spacey is a movie killer.
Chrisk
Kevin Spacey is worth 100 million dollars. I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Now he can have all the young boys he wants without the world watching.
Kangol
And if the world does find out about any more underage boys he’s having or men he’s assaulting he’ll be behind bars for the rest of his $100 million life.
Chrisk
Oh and some of you commenters are just plain sick. He sexually assaulted a 14 yo boy. That and many other assaults.
Polaro
I’m more concerned about Kevin Spacey using his power to comprise men via their careers, much like Weinstein. Kevin did go on an ego/power trip for years that was toxic and reprehensible. I’m not really confident that 14 year old boy thing (Rapp) you allude to really meets the definition of sexual assault. Blowing things out of proportion reduces credibility and undermines real sexual crimes when they are brought to light.
Barring a criminal sentence, he will make a come back in a few years; e.g. Mel Gibson. However, I have no idea if he is free and clear of criminal charges.
DHT
I’ll respect his talent again when he’s sharing a cell with Bill Cosby.
DCguy
Aplause
Mr_Heffel
eww to think I had a crush on him….? he is just like Weinstein, Cosby, and Trump.
Taking advantage of people because they are in a place of power. They are all greedy power hungry bastards.
It’s wrong and no one should get a pass on that period. The Cheeto is next
DHT
Let’s hope Dame Judi doesn’t get to visit him in prison…who knows what she would do to get that hacksaw in.
