THE SHOT —Justin Bieber showed up at, of all places, the CMT Awards (a fan-voted awards show for country music videos and television performances) in an ACT-UP shirt. Is it us, or does the mere fact that Bieber was born in 1994 discredit any understanding he might have of what ACT-UP is or stands for? Was Chely Wright his date?
This obviously premeditated decision hasn’t fallen on deaf ears, la Bieb! Next time you want to wear an AIDS activist shirt, maybe wear something from the Product (Red) collection. Then, at least, you will have the cognitive memory to understand your tee messaging in context.

So, Beiber wears a t-shirt that represents the support of finding a way to end AIDS and you still want to criticize him? I guess this is just another attempt to attack Justin Beiber, even if he does something positive. I suppose if he wore a RED shirt that you’d still find something to criticize.
I just don’t get people that look for every opportunity to attack this KID. Sure, he’s popular. Sure, it gets very old to hear girls screaming his name. And, he’s likely very conservative in his values and beliefs. But, he’s just a KID. Let him mature a few years before you start nit-picking everything about him.

Why is there an apostrophe in this article title? The only situation in which one would be acceptable would be if it was “Justin Beiber’s Act’s Up,” and even then, no one would say it.
Would you write “Obama walk’s down the road”? No? Then don’t write “act’s up.”

I love how the comments on this story defend a twit celebrity who really doesn’t know what ACT UP was all about, and a neurotic spellchecker.
Does no one care that this is blasphemy and totally inappropriate. My eyes are burning.

Guys, that wasn’t Justin Beiber, it was his Lesbian stunt double. Silly gays.

and this is one reason why we are seen as bitter queens…
alan brickman
Good for him!!!
Bobby Christina Crawford
it is the coolest thing anyone his age has ever done……for a celebrity.

Justin Bieber is OK.
As for the Hillbilly singers, it seems like they have an award show to give out prizes for how fabulous they are every two months. Seriously, Nashville, enough already.
Fitz
I sincerely doubt that he, or most of you, know much about ACT UP.
For that matter, I don’t think he dresses himself.
But it’s a new low in the land of petty to wrap yourself around a tree over his T-Shirt.
Eric
Oh god, I hope ACT UP isn’t going the way of Che Guevara…
Michael
Once again instead of heaping praise on a public figure for supporting gay rights they need to find something dumb-as-shite to bitch about.
You guys are beyond pathetic.
I, for one, think what Justin Bieber did was outstanding. Wearing a gay rights t-shirt to a very, very homophobic get-together takes balls.
Props to him.
Jeffree
I wonder if more that a handful of people at the CMT Awards had *any* idea what ACT-UP refers to.
How much Bieber really knows about ACT-UP is another question.
Criticizing him for wearing it is pretty tacky though.
tess jr
@tess jr: won’t repeat actually as i don’t call names, but will fess up; now i’m gay in-fighting but this was too much. Viva Bieber + his handlers.
tess jr
MATT S, i am sorry. i just disagree.
Godiva
Uh, I wear Act Up, and I’m the same age, and I do it because I care about bringing light to particular issues. But Bieber even implied being gay is a choice. He’s a moron. And him wearing this particular line is offensive.
Ogre Magi
@Godiva: I agree: I doub’t he even knew what it meant

whoever wrote this article is an idiot!
what was your point!??
he’s wearing something to bring awareness to Aids, not to your ridiculous unnecessary faggy insecurities about styling!
Why are you so concerned about what additional effort he needs to make in validating his wearing of an already iconic logo/shirt, or his age.. it’s evident that he has a good understanding of standing up for a cause.. (what is your cause again?)!
And don’t include me in “is it “us”, or does the mere fact that Bieber” bla bla blah.. Where are you from??? Find something constructive to write about! or is that too hard!
Queerty “free of an agenda except that gay one’? ridiculing anyone making an effort (especially these days) at promoting Aids (which is not gay anymore) is not my idea of a gay agenda! please get demoted to mail boy like yesterday!

whoever wrote this article is an incompetent peace maker! (I read that I can’t use the word idiot.. so much for autonomy as the writer seems to have)..

go starlet (whenevry other one is “a style icon” w/ a fashion line, ugh). maybe it redeems his previous childish implications. now let’s hold him to it, walk the walk little bro.
jeff thompson
Sorry man. The fact that Justin Bieber wore this shirt in the ‘bible belt’ is quite a statement. Gotta give him props. You’re off base on this one.
ron
This Canadian kid continues to surprise and impress me.
Red Meat
If I saw an Act up shirt at the store, I would take it to mean in line with bullying, so who is to say he thought it was for AIDS? Stupid post.
tess jr
My bad once again (never had online pissfight or name calling, appalling, not my way), Matt, but u’ve obviously touched a nerve. He’s a kid, right + people grow? Baby dyke alike ally in new country “that’s gay” lan, thumbs up!! Re: the kids today’s cognition:
TAVI (Gevinson; teen fashion savant, lecturer, Sassy magazine, dead in her infancy, enthusiast, possible reviver). More such it kids please.
Trent
Lets be realistic here; he probably didnt know what ACT UP meant. I was born in 1986 and I was still too young to understand the movement and don’t even remember it being a thing. I also grew up in Indiana. So if he did do research and gets what it its about, good for him! If he doesn’t whatever. Sometimes a shirt is just a shirt. The words act up doesn’t always have to be related to the ACT UP fight Aids. I didnt relate the two until the I read the story. Different generations people.
tess jr
One word: Tavi–sharp + we don’t know what it means to them–kids cognitive powers today! applicable i think. But yah, Trent, we san fran-ers git a lil overbearing. & Matt + everyone, forgive my foul! lash/lapse evryone pleaz (i’ve been pretty harmonious online till this) ahem. thank you.

That was so great that he did that and i absolutely love him, but I HATE THOSE EARINGS.
Lvng1tor
Listen, I can’t stand his music, his voice seriously grates my nerves…but he is the leading teen in the world right now and if he wears an ACT UP T-shirt to an event it’s a good thing! Someone needs to get this kid on record as to why and what it means to him. Like him or not he has great influence and I for one would like it to be used so high school LGBTQI kids are safer more excepted in in the end happy and ALIVE!
Aaron in Honolulu
All of this hoopla about a shirt? STFUQUEERTY
Lvng1tor
@Aaron in Honolulu: When the most famous teen in the world wears an ACT-UP tshirt to the conservative CMT’s yeah its a big deal
