Rapper-turned-born-again-Trump-devotee Kanye West will reportedly perform at Awaken 2020, an antigay prayer rally being held in Arizona over the weekend.
The newly saved rapper is expected to perform with his traveling gospel choir sometime during the 10-hour event, which is being held at the Sun Devil Stadium in Phoenix on Saturday.
Evangelical leaders and ring-wing celebrities alike will gather to preach about the “spirit of lawlessness” also known as homosexuality and strategize about ways to discriminate against LGBTQ people. All in the name of Jesus H. Christ, of course.
According to the conservative news site The Western Journal, West’s appearance is being seen by organizers of Awaken 2020 as a way of using God to “help spark the next national spiritual awakening in the United States.” Or something.

Other “celebrity” guests expected at the hate rally include “Prophet” Cindy Jacobs (who warns LGBTQ equality will cause a civil war), Trump surrogate Guillermo Maldonado (who says gay people “invite unclean spirits into our lives”), and antigay activist Ché Ahn (who doesn’t believe in the existence of LGBTQ civil rights).
Last year, West released a Gospel song titled “Closed on Sunday,” which was meant to be an ode to the homophobic fast food chain Chick-Fil-A.

Apparently, the group is not running the event. They’re just participating along with Kanye. Still, he’s once again associating himself with hate-groups and hateful people.
I will say that Kanye has always come off semi-queer-ish to me. He has always seemed to have some type of same-sex romantic, sexual, affection passions and tendencies. But like a lot of guys with who contend with confusions/fluidity, mental illness, past traumas – he doesn’t seem to know how to cope without being bat-shit, an addict, a hateful contrarian and/or a narcissistic martyr. I could be way off, but those are the vibes I’ve gotten from him even when he was a beloved, seemingly sane figure. That’s why I’m not surprised by the direction he’s taken his life, politics and career.

I picked up on some “queer” attributes from Kanye a long ass time ago, way before he became problematic and eventually cray-cray. And I’m not someone who automatically believes every homophobe/anti-gay person has some secret same-sex tendencies or desires. However, if you know a decent amount about human psychology, trauma, sexuality and the orientation spectrum then it ain’t that difficult to suss certain people out and to suss out some of their probable struggles. If you don’t want to be associated with “bad” people then don’t associate yourself with them. Just because you and another person are not entirely heterosexual and cis gender doesn’t mean you’re comparable in any real way. Hell, having the exact same orientation as someone doesn’t mean you can relate to them or their politics or their circumstances. This is one of the issues with the “community” mentality and dependence on identity politics.

These rappers are not our friends. They have never been friends of the gay community. They have made a career out of taking cheap shots at us, wishing we were dead; making fun of gay men dying of AIDS. Both Eddie Murphy and a lot of these rappers got rich by their anti-gay entertainment. Oddly enough Eddie Murphy, one of the worst anti-gay comics out there, recently got a lifetime achievement award and not a word from anyone in the gay community. Kanye is a similar son of a bitch.

Eddie Murphy at least got rich and dropped out of public life eventually. He at least seems contrite about his youth in recent interviews. Whether it is sincere is another question, but it’s smart.
Kanye West, I don’t know what to make of him. Him being newly saved is curious. Some closeted men are drawn to born-again Christianity as a way to fight their native selves. I know I did.

Kanye has had “pro gay” lyrics in his earlier rap music. And he’s spoken out against homophobia a couple of times. Once again, this was much earlier in his career. But that’s one of the reasons why I feel trauma, fluidity, confusion, internalized homophobia and a broken ego have a lot to do with his current persona and politics.

Kanye doesn’t seem like someone who went the born-again route simply because he’s homo or even a bit homo and hates it. He comes off more like someone who became frustrated with confusions, contradictions, fluidity, and perhaps same-sex passions, affections, love and need for emotional connection. (His co-dependent dynamic with Jay-Z and vague connection with Riccardo Tisci hint towards this). I have a feeling that if Kanye was a basic closet case we wouldn’t see this level of narcissism and hysteria from him. He also seems to view women almost strictly as property, sexual objects and as mere representation of social status. A lot of guys who aren’t homosexual but are homo-romantic/homo-affectionate and prefer same-sex relationships have those types of tendencies. That see women very narrowly. That’s likely why he got with Kim in the first place. It more less about her and more about what she represented. Kayne’s whole life seems driven by constantly trying to re-assemble his ego.
Once again, this is all guesswork. But this is the type of shit I see a lot of and have personally experienced to some degree.

He let the world know 16 years ago that this was coming some day, and later started calling himself Yesus (not too far from Yeshua, the Hebrew name from Jesus), so I’m surprised people are surprised. Also, he’s on meds, and has never gotten over his mother’s death. He has had gay friends and associates all along, and has never been particularly homophobic (sexist and misogynistic, however, yes). These nuts have embraced him and he them, but it seems like he’s mainly going through a midlife crisis. He wouldn’t be the first.
