@Desert Boy: I’m part of her generation, I’m her age, and, honestly, I think “Will & Grace” needs to stop being the marker for gay acceptance first of all (it wasn’t THAT progressive). I also don’t know that it’s necessarily our generation, it’s deriving from an elitist school of thought that one is above being categorized in any sense whatsoever. Any threat of losing individual identity in a vague, abstract sense sets some people off. They want to be special, they want to be cool. Nice try, I’m comparing her own actions. She claims she’s out and yet did MULTIPLE interviews and red carpet appearances, photo ops, and candids when she was dating a man. now she claims she is out and yet did nothing.

As a minority(even if you’re barely a minority) losing visibility is the real danger. Just look at how many people are being killed by police(all colors including white people) yet only black people are being shown to race bait everyone and manipulate feelings. If the public knew poor people across the board were being killed and the police officers never face charges we’d be seeing totally different reactions and a serious discussion for presidential candidates.
On the other side of the coin maybe now people can see these sham Hollywood couplings are fake as can be and often times these people are actually gay which is why everyone’s dar is pinging all the time when we see them. Derp.

In a normal circumstance yes, but the media has an unspoken, or in some cases spoken agreement with Hollywood to NOT show. Remember, NPH didn’t come out, Perez Hilton simply ran some of the photos of him that had been out there for years that no other media would show, of he and his boyfriend holding hands.
In interviews about Mission Impossible, Jeremy Renner’s co-stars talk about how “Masculine” he is and he is NEVER asked about the guy he lives with and has owned a house with for a decade. Rosie O’Donnell used to bring her girlfriend to red carpet events and yet the Hollywood media would write stories about how tough it must be for her as a single mother with her adopted kids, leaving out the fact that her girlfriend was at home with them, and that they knew about her.
The ONLY reason that Stewart is saying anything is because her mother accidentally outted her publicly so now the media has to acknowledge it.

I do agree with you that this woman is closeted, and would have never came out had her mother not said anything. A lot of actors and actresses are but Hollyweird is deeply closeted, and has been for decades. LGBT youth who have a lot more to risk come out, and so do LGBT people who come out in other countries where you can be killed or put into prison.
