Lance Bass Forgives Homophobic “Bachelor”, Thinks He’s “Cute” And “Can’t Help It”

lance-bass-juan-pablo-galavisOh, Lance. You were cuter with your mouth closed.

The former boy band member and failed astronaut addressed the controversy surrounding The Bachelor star Juan Pablo Galavis and the comments he made about gay people last week in an interview with TV Page.

“I don’t hate him at all,” Bass said of the man who said gay people are “perverted” and “too intense” for national television. “I still think he’s cute.”

Galavis later issued an apology and blamed his poor English skills for the “confusion.” Bass defended his insensitivity and revealed that he “actually loves” Galavis in an interview with the AP this week.

“When you grow up in a place like [Venezuela], you get brainwashed into thinking that way, you know, you can’t help what you grow up with,” he said. “I mean, I grew up in Mississippi, so I know how people can get brainwashed into thinking really, really awful things. So hopefully, he will learn from this and get educated.”

We know the feeling, Lance. When you grow up listening to great music by bands like *NSYNC, you get brainwashed into supporting their career revival attempts later in life. Hopefully someday we’ll learn from this too.

  • KittyLitter

    Lance is SO over.

  • Dixie Rect

Not only is he looking more and more like a special needs adult, he is sounding like one too. Why is TV Page even asking this has been back up dancer for a comment? Teen mom Farrah wasn’t available?

  • Joetx

Thank you, Lance, for proving the stereotype that gay men care more about looks than substance.

No go back to your privileged lifestyle & STFU.

  • AuntieChrist

Lance should wash the glory hole semen out of his hair and return to obscurity.

  • Joetx

My comment should have read as “Now go back to your privileged lifestyle & STFU.”

  • stranded

So Bass coming from a place of understanding is a bad thing? WTF is with all the bass hate? If it was just the “cute” remark, i’d understand, but the second quote shows Bass has an understanding that homophobes aren’t monsters, but average people who grew up believing homosexcuality is a perversion/sin because that is what they’re family/ society told them.

  • dougmc92

Lanc eis the gay one from NSYNC….He’s never been known as the smart one from NSYNC!

  • MK Ultra

Well, Bass does seem to have a touch of the derpity derp.
But I do agree with him that the bachelor dude’s comments seem to be more out of complete ignorance than hatred or spite.
Maybe he will learn something from all this.

  • enfilmigult

I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with “hopefully he’ll learn from this.” That already acknowledges that he hasn’t, much, and that the apology he put out isn’t really cutting it. It’s just that it also acknowledges that he got far enough to apologize instead of just flipping off the people who complained, so he thinks this isn’t yet the point to totally write him off as a human being. It’s not all that wacky or even forgiving a postition to take.

  • ouragannyc

“Oh, Lance. You were cuter with your mouth closed.”

I haven’t laughed so much in while. Great article. Fabulously written.

  • CCTR

I guess it would have been OK if Lance said those things about Aaron Schock. Queerty has used at least a few words to described him… RILF, beefcake, and hunk to name a few.
Glad that Lance is happy in his life and that he doesn’t use time and energy to hate. He understands that although Galvis is physically attractive he is also ignorant. Hopefully someday we will all learn from Lance’s example… and get educated… and learn how to be understanding.

  • AnitaMann

His comments towards the end of that interview were even dumber, saying that gay men don’t know how to throw a wedding because basically they need a woman. He’s just a dumb fag.

  • AnitaMann

“It sucks when two guys are planning a wedding, because we’re guys. So we have no idea what to do,” he said.

    What an ignorant fool.

  • CaptainFabulous

@stranded: If you’re expecting logic, reasoning, and intelligent comments you’ve absolutely come to the wrong place.

  • jimbryant

When was Lance Bass ever considered to be talented? At one stage, he was a pretty face in a band that was marketed to hormonally-charged teenage girls.

The charade back then was despicable. Anything he says now is detritus.

  • oilburner

Lance Bass is crossed eyed and autistic looking I never thought he was cute in fact when he came out yrs ago I thought to myself ” great another fucked up moronic gay guy who gonna go running around pretending to be an expert on all gay men” smdh

  • glittercomments

I am kind of tired of Lance Bass. First off, he isn’t attractive, and never ever was. Not that it matters much. The words he says are a total insult to lgbt Americans — portraying us as idiots who are willing to excuse homophobic comments as long as the person is “cute”. What a digsusting person.

  • stanhope

@jimbryant: @jimbryant: Pretty face? You must be Mr. Magoo

  • stanhope

Lance Bass…what a joke. Let him go bottom for Miss Bachelor. LOL LOL Maybe Miss Bachelor will give him a cheap silver ring from Saks. Serve his ass right. Reichen was never so lucky to be rid of this bitch.

  • tardis

What did he say that’s so off putting to everyone? In context, he’s right. The guy needs to get educated.

  • Cam

Oh, so Lance has stopped defending the Hollywood closet long enough to talk about how “Cute” the homophobe is?

While he’s talking about how growing up in Venezuela can brainwash somebody, it might be a good idea to remember that Lance was raised in Mississippi, looks like he may still have some of his own brainwashing to get over.

  • james_in_cambridge

I guarantee that half the gay dudes out there agree with Bass. Too many of us are shallow morons, who think about nothing but sex and more sex. If Hitler was cute, we’d be making excuses about how misunderstood he was. SMDH!!!

  • DarkZephyr

@stranded: A “place of understanding” is fine, but Homophobes ARE monsters. I don’t care what their excuse for being that way is.

  • mekaleka

    Lance Bass is still alive?

  • MikeE

@dougmc92: “He’s never been known as the smart one from NSYNC!”

    There was a SMART one?????

  • AuntieChrist

@james_in_cambridge: Stalin or Mussolini would have been the better choice H is just too common a reference for a Cambridge man though I tend to agree…However since Bass has released some sort of music thing she is just trying to keep her name in the papers. Perhaps she is not as stupid as she looks and sounds.

  • MikeE

@AuntieChrist: I more often than not find myself agreeing with your comments, most of them making perfect sense.

But here, I have to stop and comment and question you: you use the feminine pronoun in reference to Lance Bass. Obviously, this is meant in some way to demean him or ridicule him. Are gay men really still finding themselves resorting to blatantly sexist insults as put-downs? Hasn’t time taught us that this type of intolerance is unacceptable?

How can we demand respect for LGBT people, but then stoop to our enemies’ lowest level and appropriate offensive terminology?

I’m all for ridiculing Lance Bass for taking himself so seriously as a “musician”. Heck, I’d even agree if someone were to ridicule his hair style or his wardrobe.

But I don’t think it is in any way acceptable, in this day and age, to resort to calling him “she”, as though the very association of being a woman were in some way ridicule in itself.

  • AuntieChrist

@MikeE: You make an excellent point and perhaps I am not so PC it would have been better had I compared him to a teenaged girl sighing over a cute hunky boy which was my intent…Or to be gender neutral in stating that lots of people suffer abuses and give pass cards to guys if they are good looking…There are echos of my past in using gender specific pronouns in that respect.

  • Louis

I don’t hate Lance at all I just think hes an ignorant dumbass focused on this guys looks instead of his ignorant and discriminatory words .

    Totally clueless douche period .

  • Louis

@Dixie Rect: Way too show compassion dude.

Looking like a special needs adult? WTF? I don’t think some of you even read what you write before you post it.

  • TheGoToGayGuy

I think this is a “teachable” moment, for both of them.

  • queertyreader

What a douche – Lance Bass AND the Bachelor!!

  • Stefano

    They are both cute. :-)

  • BJ McFrisky

Blasphemy! Lance Bass makes an honest statement—the horror! Off to the gay Gitmo with him.

Sorry, but there are a lot of men out there who “wouldn’t approve of my lifestyle” but who I find smoking hot, nonetheless. They don’t have to approve of my politics to receive my aesthetic approval.

  • Spike

Lance who? Talk about the most not applicable gay.

  • jwrappaport

I think Aristophanes (via Kevin Kline) said it best:

“Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever.”

  • glittercomments

@stanhope: Reichen was also a disgusting shallow jerk. Don’t defend any of these people, they’re all garbage.

  • ppp111

    @BJ McFrisky:

I’m gonna have to agree with you here. I’m not defending Bass; I don’t anyone has to but he was just being honest. I kind of compare this to the Kardashian girls. Most straight men would say Kim is used goods but wouldn’t turn down a night with her if they had a chance. Why is this different? We’re men, we’re attracted to things visually. I admit Juan is cute but what he said totally turned me off him. If I met him on the street and didn’t know who he was that might be a different story. I think many gay men might agree.

  • Cam

    @BJ McFrisky:

What a shocker, BJ continually attacks people on here for their “Honest” opinions, and yet can’t wait to defend somebody who makes a statement minimizing a homophobe.

As I have said multiple times BJ, no matter what the situation you will ALWAYS defend the homophobes, or people defending them…WITHOUT FAIL.

  • Stefano

@cam : yep you are right.

  • maritza stokes

Recently got a fantastic gold Dodge Challenger SRT8 Core just by some part time working online with a macbook air… browse around this web-site>>> http://x.co/3kM0B

  • BiL

Being cute is not a pass for saying stupid things. Scott Petersen, Ted Bundy, and Jeffrey Dahmer were also considered to be “cute”.

  • Fitz

I’m the first to call for the public execution of apologists .. but really? What he said was actually right.. the guy comes from an asshole country. He’s hoping that he grows up. And he even equates it to his own history of being raised on the back lot of Hee Haw. I see nothing wrong with what he said.

  • LeNair Xavier

Stupid as the pass is that Lance Bass gives Juan Pablo, the only reason people here are hating him for it is because so many do the same thing. In fact, if we go over some comments over past articles with some names of commenters, some of you have said something along the same lines about someone else with some degree of celebrity.

EXHIBIT A: Many have attacked me for my stance against gay-for-pay. And I know the reason I’m being attacked is because the commenter (whether they admit it or not) fears my speaking out threatens them seeing the object of their lust.

So in the end, a lot of the hate here being thrown at Lance Bass is because it makes some of us look at a mirror. A mirror showing the ugliness brought forth by the stupidity of giving someone a free pass just because you think they’re “cute”.

  • Fitz

He said he didn’t hate the guy for having been taught stupid things, and hopes he will grow up. WTF is the vitriol for? Jeepers.. we don’t even need gay bashers, we do it ourselves.

  • glittercomments

@Fitz: You have to be kidding me, right? You’re calling us gay bashers for telling Lance Bass that excusing homophobic bs is wrong just because a guy is “cute”? The previous comments are right; some people – like you and Lance Bass – would be ok with Hitler if he was cute enough. It’s sickening to the core. Grow a conscience and condemn the wrong person not those standing up against hate.

  • glittercomments

@LeNair Xavier: Clearly you have a moral reasoning problem. Condemning Lance Bass for excusing a homophobic person just because the person is “cute” is not the same as the homophobic statements made. AS MLK said: I do not tolerate intolerance. You can’t conscript me into excusing an idiot’s homophobia just because he is attractive. It’s amazing to me to see so many gay men bend over backwards for an attractive man no matter what vitriol comes out of his mouth.

  • tjr101

So in basically, Lance Bass excuses Juan Pablo’s bigotry because he’s cute. Right, got it!

    How shallow.

  • Fitz

@glittercomments: Did you read the article or just the headline? He said that the guy was raised in assholeland and has some dumb ideas that were pumped into him, just like he himself did at one point. AND he said he was cute. No where did he say he was excusing his comments because of being cute.. he’s excusing his comments because he knows where they come from and hopes the guy will grow up. Though.. I don’t know… why anyone would want the approval of a pack of wounded wolverines is kind of beyond me. It’s like your just itching to find a reason to think everyone is evil. So Lance thinks 1) the guy was pumped full of propaganda and needs an education and 2) the guy is hot. I think the same. The guy is full of it, and I hope that he learns something. (though I think he is more likely to learn that we are vicious than loving).

  • KDub

Lance was just being an optimist. I’m sure it’s hard for a lot of QT readers and writers to understand, but some guys just really aren’t that jaded. Lance also has a man, and I’d be willing to bet most of the negative Nancys here don’t.

  • AEH

It’s kinda funny that the people here are busy drooling over Tom Daley and others, and lambasting Bass for finding Juan attractive.

    Haters gonna hate!

  • DShucking

This is all your faults for giving a good god damn what a Backstreet Boy has to say!

  • glittercomments

@Tackle: It’s pathetic, of course. This is the soup these people swim in. They’re so shallow they can’t possibly care about anything more than looks. Look at the disgusting shallow people here who are making excuses- just like Bass did- you know, because someone is “cute”. Thank God Hitler wasn’t cute– he’s have a gay fanclub.

  • GlitterKidder

Who is he? And we care what he says, why?

  • J.T.

Of course he’s cute, Lance you ninny. That’s what makes his being such an asswipe all the more pathetic. Let the fish have Juan Pablo, his illegitimate bastard, his failed career, his deadbeat dadism, and his idiotic homophobia.

  • Patsy Stoned

Yes, sweetie. We should all listen to what that cross-eyed lesbian-looking idiot Lance Bass has to say about anything. Talk about empty calories, darling. Shallow doesn’t begin to describe this fool…didn’t he have a “relationship” with gold-digging slut Riechen, of all people?

  • james_in_cambridge

@AuntieChrist: You’re right. It was beneath me. But I couldn’t demean Stalin anyway, you know, being from Cambridge and all…

  • lgwolf

As a gay man, I find these backbreaking overly Tolerant & perpetually Understanding/forgiving queens to be INSUFFERABLE & the gay equivalent of Uncle Tomism. Some of us are not sacharine apologists who toss our vindications out the window just because some hateful bigot is ‘cute’. I guess Hitler just needed a hug too.

  • Geoff B

I feel sorry for anyone who’s affected by what someone as irrelevant as Lance Bass thinks. As for me, I’ll wait for the “Mob Wives” to weigh in and tell me what to think, thank you.

  • martinbakman

@KDub That’s another thing. Lance Bass has a man as you reminded. He is engaged to this quite young man yet Lance admits to having a crush on J.P.G.? I’ve listened to LB radio show and he goes on about ogling good looking men at gay clubs even now that he is officially tying the not. I’m an old fashioned queen I guess, but why the fuck get married if you are still window shopping. At least he ought to keep his big gay trap shut about his lustful looking. I feel badly for this dude that’s getting stuck with him unless the publicity is helping his own career.

  • Geoff B

@martinbakman: I wouldn’t say you’re an “old fashioned queen”, but rather someone who values commitment and loyalty. Sure, there are guys I find attractive and there are guys my fiancee find attractive but we don’t go on and on about it. As my beloved says “why go out and ogle McDonalds when I can have steak at home whenever I want?”. Not crazy about being compared to steak, mind you, but he’s from farm country, and yeah, he can. ;)

  • Cynthia M. Thomas

My Uncle Matthew just got an awesome metallic Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible by working off of a macbook air… navigate to this website>>> http://gg.gg/1109l

  • Stefano

@igwolf : “i guess Hitler just needed a hug too.” I just can’t stop laughing. You are so cute.

  • Louis

@LeNair Xavier: I hate gay for pay mainly because half those men are homophobic and revile us as human beings in real life and the feelings mutual in that regard.

Ive said something about this also on other sites the last few years it Is so tiring seeing people drooling over men that could easily hate our way of living and our way of loving and who we love for that matter.

  • nature boy

    bend over *forward*

  • Stache1

@Fitz: Funny how when some republican from the the red neck states say the same thing there not offered explanations of how their upbringing effected their thinking. Just dumb bigots.

I just think this kind of logic is interesting in that it does seem to be selective based on ones looks. One gets assaulted with names while the other is “There there baby boy. You just don’t know any better”.

  • Stache1

They’ve done studies on how good looking people can get away with just about anything. Especially true in the Gay community where youthful looks are practically worshipped above any other trait.

  • Stache1

@martinbakman: You can bet it’s about publicity for both of them. Remember Reichen Lehmkuhl? You can’t tell me that wasn’t a PR move.

  • CCTR

@Stache1: I think you are very wrong. Most of the time these red neck states are referred to as the “Bible Belt”. It is implied that much of their politics and belief system have to do with biblical/religious teachings…not just dumb bigots.

  • CCTR

It is quite interesting that so many gay men here are commenting such mean and harsh things about Lance Bass, an openly gay man. Lance has a history of philanthropic involvement and I think his comments about this Juan guy simply demonstrate his compassion and loving personality.

Why shouldn’t he excuse these comments from some simple reality show character as being ignorant? Should Lance advocate for Juan to be stoned to death…or suggest that he get educated and learn from this?

What makes any of these mean comments about Bass any better than Juan’s comments about gay people? Not much, they are based on ignorance and hate. It is clearly pathetic!

  • Stache1

@CCTR: I don’t buy that one bit. I’ve found that most Bible Belt bigots don’t follow much of anything in the bible. They just hate fags and use it as a convenient cover.

You either follow what the Bible says and believe it. If you just pick and choose like most of them then you’re just a Dumb (Hypocritical) Bigot.

  • glittercomments

So lets just get this straight. Lance Bass forgives someone because he is “cute” and we get a torrent of gays here willing to defend a homophobe and his defender because they are “cute”. How pathetic and ridiculous is this? Just thank God Hitler and Stalin weren’t “cute” or they’d have supporters among gay men.

  • PSHank3

Bass is possibly the only person stupider than Juan Pablo!

  • CCTR

    @Stache1: ok

  • J.T.

In the end, self-hating gays like moon-faced Lance are more dangerous than anti-gay types like Juan Pablo.

  • Cam

    @Geoff B: said…

“I feel sorry for anyone who’s affected by what someone as irrelevant as Lance Bass thinks. As for me, I’ll wait for the “Mob Wives” to weigh in and tell me what to think, thank you.”

Your comment would be more on point if not for the fact that the media keeps running to Lance about all issues that are gay. He knows and he has worked to get himself viewed as some type of spokesperson so he also knows his comments reflect on the community.
His comments wouldn’t matter if he wasn’t constantly being interviewed by the press on things just like this…and if he didn’t CONTINUALLY say such stupid things. I definitely see why Timberlake ditched the rest of the group.

  • KDub

@Tackle: No, I don’t know Lance personally, but I have seen him address bigotry before. He usually responds to negativity with a “kill ’em with kindness” approach, and that’s why I said what I said. Again, I’m sure it’s not an approach you can wrap your mind around, but some guys just aren’t as jaded.

  • KDub

@martinbakman: Since when does getting married mean you can’t look at another guy for the rest of your life? How silly! I can already see why you don’t have a man, and you probably never will…
