Time for the Queerty weekend post with five of the most compelling, thought-provoking (or just downright bitchy) comments that came directly from you! Here’s what made us ponder or giggle to ourselves in the office.
1. Doing it semi-publicly is important to them for a # of reasons: being in the closet about anything sucks. There is a normalization and validation that comes from being in the crowd, and there is a (believe it or not) strong sense of community around it.
The lighter side of it is fun and harmless. Who hasn’t held their partner’s head a little roughly? Who hasn’t had their tit nibbled on until it feels raw?

2. As a member of the demographic this topic is most pertinent towards (heterosexual women in their childbearing years) let me say that I used to be very adamantly anti-abortion, having been raised in a very conservative home, and never conceiving of myself ever having to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. I envisioned women who had abortions as heartless whores, who needed to be stopped to protect the lives of their blameless unborn children. That is until my own happily married sister became pregnant with her third child. The whole family welcomed the news, and then came that horrific ultrasound. The child was not developing as it should, it’s brain was malformed, and if it was brought to full term, it would probably only live a few hours after birth. My sister and her wonderful husband anguished over what to do for days, seeking advice from family members, including myself. I was surprised to hear my own voice advise them to terminate the pregnancy, which they did.
The world is a complicated place, and I’ve come to the conclusion that some things are simply too personal for the government to involve itself in. What a woman does with the life growing in her own womb, in my humble opinion, is one of them.

3. It is interesting that so few people in the LGBT community recognize how many LGBT supportive churches have stood beside them in fighting for equality. Granted, the vast majority of churches haven’t. But, many have. The last time I checked, there were over 6,500 gay affirming churches in the world. Yes, there is actually a website that tracts this. That’s certainly more than many people realize. In my city and others many LGBT friendly churches actually take part in gay pride parades. But, unfortunately, many in the LGBT community prefer to just throw rocks, judge and vilify. It’s bigotry and prejudice, not even thinking for 2 seconds that not all people of faith are the same. Just as not everyone in the LGBT community is the same.

4. He has a point, but it’s pretty much going to be this way no matter what, since DOMA guarantees that it has to be fought on multiple fronts, and state by state.
In other words, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating victories at the state level, but until DOMA is gone, and until all states recognize at a very minimum out of state marriages (which won’t necessarily be the case when DOMA’s gone, due to the caselaw on Full Faith and Credit and per se illegal marriages), we should keep in mind that it’s pretty thin soup, and stay focused on achieving true equality.

5. Well, while I don’t doubt Piers is not giving the kid his due, he does have a point. AGT is about finding a Vegas show. Will a male pole dancer be enough to carry a show? Sort of like the yo-yo kid. It’s a neat talent that, i’m sure, takes incredible amount of dedication, but…after about 5 minutes what is the point? are the “masses” going to pay to see it? It it really a million dollar act?
I can see it being part of something larger, but the only thing? not really. Yes it’s athletic, yes it’s difficult, yes it’s artistic, however, the cirque shows are not one guy on a pole… is the point I think he’s making.
