A Democratic would-be lawmaker has just put out his first campaign advert. It’s quickly gone viral.
Alex Walker, who is gay, has announced that he hopes to unseat Rep. Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s 3rd District. He’s one of around ten potential Democratic contenders.
Yesterday, he released his first campaign video. It succinctly paints Boebert’s representation of the district as a shitshow. Literally.
In the clip, Coloradans are bombarded with a shower of poo from the sky.

“We are real Coloradans,” says Walker in the advert. “We deserve a living wage, small government that actually works and freedom of choice. Instead, we have bullshit.”
He then asks: “Don’t you ever wonder where it’s all coming from?”
At this point, the video cuts to a red-tinted Boebert nameplate on a desk. A Boebert lookalike is then shown hosing poop around her office.
“Colorado needs a bull, not a bullshitter. I’m Alex Walker, and I approve the shit out of this message.”
On his campaign website, Walker describes himself as a “Colorado native, engineer, writer & small business owner.”
“I’m a gay moderate who believes in small government, personal freedom & human rights. Groundbreaking,” he writes, followed by a rolling-eyes emoji.
“If you’ve over bottom-feeding racist morons like Lauren Boebert: welcome.”
He goes on to say he was partly inspired to run by the suicide of his brother.
“Part of why I’m running is to honor my brother and everyone left behind by elected officials who don’t do their jobs.
“’I’m 100 percent committed to stopping Boebert from continuing her endless cycle of attacking people because of who they are or what they look like.”
On his Twitter bio, he describes himself as, “🏳️🌈 smart, hot, humble, running for Congress against Lauren Boebert, obviously.”

The article doesn’t say that it was a YouTube ad, which is why I assumed it was made for broadcast TV. Campaign videos are usually broadcast on TV, aren’t they?

So, if you look at the lower left side of the video that is embedded in the article you will notice it says “Watch on YouTube”. Also, both photo credits are “YouTube”… I’m not sure what else needs to be done to tell you that the video is on YouTube.
Campaign ads target for baby boomers and older are probably usually on broadcast/cable television. So I’m sure there are a ton of Republicans that still rely on that format. Anyone trying to cater to Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z has to have a modern approach and go to where their audience is which is the internet.

This is actually pretty clever strategic use of funds for a candidate. They can post the campaign ad on YouTube without needing to pay for broadcast ad time. Lots of people have or soon will “cut the cord” and use smart appliances to stream content. TV manufacturers already equip newer TVs with some form of free content by default along with built in YouTube, Netflix, and other streaming apps.
There’s a reason broadcast & cable television are dying industries. Their only edge left is live sports. ESPN and other live sport channels constitute the majority of the average monthly cable bill. That’s also why cable sells packaged plans, because if people could drop the sports channels, they could shave 50-60% off their cable bill, and still go to a bar to watch games.

Funny ad! But after looking at his policies, he is not that much better. Being against Medicare For All means he is okay with 69k Americans (w/o the pandemic) needlessly dying every year by not having health coverage or being underinsured. During the pandemic, the numbers have been much higher than that. Seeing the suffering and death the current system causes and seeing that the maximize profit health care system only leads to more deaths, his policy is disastrous.

I think that especially in a primary field with 10 candidates running, he’s got a snowball’s chance in hell of winning, but this shock ad will draw more attention to the race in general, and be a net benefit when it comes down to the general election. I think the ad is great, but there are too many staunchy old pearl clutches out there for this ad NOT to prejudice people against Walker and not blame him for offending their sensibilities over this ad.
I’m glad that the democratic primary field is so envigored, but more important is whether Boebert is facing primary challengers from inside her own party. Just blocking her from getting on the general election ballot would be a huge benefit for all. This is Boebert’s first incumbent election, when she is most vulnerable to a challenger. I don’t think Walker will be that challenger, especially considering that the energy & excitement in the Democratic party is coming from the Progressive and Leftist younger members of the party, and not from aging moderates.

The projectile diarrhea was a bit much but I can see why he did the ad. In a crowded field where he has pretty much no political experience or recognition, he needs publicity and this is one way to do it. Once the press takes notice, he can put out more serious ads.

I expect other Democrats to follow suit, albeit in a less scatological way. It may be the only way to get media attention when you are way underfunded. The Denver Post reports that all 11 Democratic candidates combined have only 13% of Boebert’s $2 million coffers.

His Instagram photo, giving us the finger, really summarizes his irreverence. So does the caption: “CO boy running for Congress because 80% of those assholes need to be fired.”
Other quotes: “Hi, I’m Alex. I enjoy writing, math, long walks, and kicking Lauren Boebert’s ass in November’s midterm elections because she’s a conspiracy theorist who can’t spell her own name”
Any cute guy who likes math has a key to my heart. Heh. One of my best friends in high school was on the baseball and track teams, as well as the math team. He was blond and hot. Currently the the lead researcher of robotics for some NASA project.
Walker prefaces his links to social media pages with, “Watch the launch video on the corrupt Big Tech platform of your choice!” The word “corrupt” had me laughing.
The Queerty article left out the most important part of his bio, which slams Boebert for promoting QAnon. Interestingly, Walker may have actually soften his bio because some articles say that it said, “sex cults” and not just “cults.” It’s a reference to QAnon’s claim that Democrats consists of pedophiles who enslave children for sex and blood.
