The idea of having a celebration that can’t be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn’t really feel like a celebration at all. So until that’s something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally — it’s just not something that we’re gonna do.”
— Girls‘ Lena Dunham, who has a lesbian sister, playing what was once known as the Brangelina card and telling Ellen DeGeneres why she won’t marry her hot boyfriend, rock star Jack Antonoff

Seems a bit late for a statement like that to be meaningful; at this point, the normal time between deciding to marry and holding the ceremony is longer than the likely shelf life of the remaining bans.
lauraspencer
Where was she 2, 3, 4 years ago? Seems like a way for her to simply get press.
Didn’t Brad and Angelina say the same thing? We all know how that turned out.
Scribe38
I will take her at her word, but I wouldn’t want any one to hold off on getting legal rights because of this fight.
At the same time I sort of get it. I use to video shoot and edit weddings. After a while, I just couldn’t watch one more couple doing things that I was legally prevented from doing. I even started skipping the weddings of friends and family for the same reason.
iBLOW
I can’t take straight people seriously who say stuff like this.
NG22
@iBLOW: Right? I mean, I’m gay, and I wouldn’t wait for the last states to come on board if I wanted to get married.
Besides, the Supreme Court may assert that gay marriage is a constitutional right this June — which would strike down the remaining bans.
polarisfashion
I hope that SCOTUS rules in favorite of gay marriage. I think they will but I’m not holding my breath.
dhmonarch89
we’ve heard this one before- Brangelina weren’t able to hold out- after that, who cares???
sportyguy1983
What exactly does this accomplish? Oh , that’s right, it gets her publicity. This is just a ridiculous publicity stunt. Oh cares
Xzamilio
Please… WE don’t even wait until we all have the right to marry in each state lol… don’t use us for your fear of commitment or to make some political statement. We’re big boys and girls… do you, babe.
SnakeyJ
It was a powerful statement when people were first saying it years and years ago. Now, like many have commented, it’s basically saying, “Not for another 3 years!”
It’s an empty statement coming from a talentless, self-absorbed person. I don’t respect her, she’s terrible.
jwtraveler
It’s always been meaningless. Whether or not they get married doesn’t affect any gay people. I don’t care what they do. Why should anyone else?
Low Country Boy
@jwtraveler: I tend to agree. Two guys or two women getting married affects us in no way, just the same as when there was no marriage equality at all in the US. My marriage affects your marriage in no way. Get over it, religious right!
stranded
@jwtraveler: I agree. i dont’ see it as any kind of solidarity.
tusgold
Does anyone who matters really care if these 2 douche bags marry and breed? I guess I’d be grateful if she votes! and got others to vote Democrat
jason smeds
Didn’t Brad and Angelina say the same thing about 4 years ago? A short time later, they got hitched.
Cam
@jason smeds:
The weird thing about you Jason, is even when you are sort of on the right track you still feel the need to exaggerate or make stuff up. When I saw that you actually came up with a number, “about 4 years”, it was so unusual of you that I looked it up. Nope, it was 8 years. So even there you seemed to want to alter facts to make the statement worse than it is in reality. What is up with you?
As for Dunham, this is probably a good way to keep from getting married until the lawyers are done figuring out the pre-nup. 😉
tdh1980
It was dumb when celebrities were saying this year’s ago, and it’s even dumber now. Please explain how your not getting married as a straight person impacts the marriage equality movement in any measurable way. It’s not like refusing to patronize a business known for its prejudicial practices or intolerant beliefs, which is a true act of solidarity. Just have a seat.

The gesture might have meant more if it came from someone who didn’t molest her sister.
o.codone
Nobody gives a sh*it really.

I think they should quit their jobs and stay unemployed until ENDA passes. And live on the street or in a homeless shelter until anti-LGBT housing discrimination is eliminated.

What’s up with all the bitterness?
A) Lena Dunham was ASKED in an interview with Ellen. It’s not like she just decided to release this quote for publicity.
B) Allies are extremely important and decisions like this may not effect gay rights directly, but perhaps it’s important to straight people with gay friends and family members to foster an inclusive environment among the people they care about. This isn’t about making change, it’s about treating people around you equally.
C) Can you seriously compare Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff?
Low Country Boy
(A) I’m sure Ellen’s producers asked her NO questions beforehand;
(B) Yes, it is, but it is not about jumping on a bandwagon when the result is inevitable (P.S., Screw Angelina and Brad for being hypocrites); and
© No, the latter have a little more class (BTW, I cannot get autocorrect not to give me a copyright symbol).
Clark35
Who cares about Lena Dunham since she’s a media wh0re-literally, and she is a ped0.
robho3
Can’t stand her…. and isn’t her statement kinda dumb since gay people can get married in the majority of states.
demented
So in other words, her whole image took a hit when she revealed those molesty stories about her sister, and now she’s trying to be seen as a good person.
Oh, and no celebrity ever actually held back from marriage because of same sex marriage. Just look at Brad and Angelina.
