Girls creator Lena Dunham has yet again fired off a poorly received tweet, this time specifically for and/or at the gays. Her fans are doing their best to defend their fave online, but all five of them might have to work overtime.
The director is currently fresh in the promotional period for her new Amazon Original film Catherine Called Birdy. Perhaps towards that end, she put out a tweet about NYC Pride that may have garnered a bit more discussion than she was looking for.
The presumptuous statement in question:
When I go, I want my casket to be driven through the NYC pride parade with a plaque that reads “she wasn’t for everyone, but she *was* for us”- who can arrange?
— Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) October 2, 2022
Shockingly to none, the “who can arrange?” bit went unanswered.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Instead, the response was swift and a little ruthless, with the queer community soundly contradicting whatever she may have heard from the gaggle of messy millennial gays that really stan her work.

Something tells us folks aren’t feeling her:
gonna start living my life with whatever amount of confidence lena dunham has that makes her think she’s an lgbtq+ icon https://t.co/P6hUZTPolv

Lena Dunham was truly the voice of a generation: white women in the 2010s using allyship to glorify themselves.

I’m generally like “women need to take up more space!” and then Lena Dunham talks and I’m like “no not you”

if you held a gun to my head and demanded that I name one single tangible thing that Lena Dunham has done to benefit the LGBTQIA* community, I would have the most confused final few seconds of my life

If we’re gonna talk about straight folks who’ll be eulogized by the gays, her ex Jack Antonoff might have more luck. At least we got some pop hits out of him!

Now those are funny tweets. I’m in the middle. She never bothered me and a few episodes of Goils were worth the time. Someone tell me what she did that was so wrong. Edumicate me!
bachy
She did nothing. This is just more Twitter Outrage Bullsh#t.
mrcynical
performative allyship and non intersectional feminism. Basically she THINKS she is doing all this important work that is smart and celver and will make the world a better place for everyone, when its solely about straight white women.
If she just made shows about and for white women, that would be fine I guess, but she keeps trying to place herself as a voice of an entire generation, which she absolutely is not.
abfab
Celver?
LumpyPillows
Yeah, mrcynical is an example of why people hate us.

OMG, here we go, demonizing another celebrity ally for no good reason. I’ve met Lena Dunham and found her to be intelligent, kind, thoughtful, courageous and extremely creative. I have nothing but respect and admiration for her.
But of course, the gay community bitchily prefers to alienate such a person, just… because.
mrcynical
Ok, maybe you could explain what makes her a gay icon then?
MrGoldman
Exactly! She is just saying something that was a funny thought and I believe she truly loves the LGBTQ+ community. The responses are immature, petty and nasty.
abfab
Actually, what I literally meant to say was that EVERY episode was worth it and it was appointment television. Those characters! Those city streets! That guy who thought he was effing her on the side of the wooded road upstate and she said….”no, that was a thigh crease”.
But what’s his name……the tall dark freek hot odd large sexy nose beast freek? Nuff.

there’s nothing like gays creating enemies where there were none. screaming squeamish queens.

I saw her tweet and it left me scratching my head wondering where it was coming from. Did it make me mad? No, I just didn’t understand what she meant.
I think her show was bold and groundbreaking and I loved every minute of it, but it was definitely about and for straight people.
Not sure what she thinks she’s done for LGBTQ’s, but some of the greatest artists are a bit nutty.
brian6767
Not trying to be snarky but what was so groundbreaking about Girls? I watched it, liked it, but thought it was kinda boring, as I look back now.

This is a woman who is aware anything she says will trigger responses across the spectrum. She’s also a woman who wrote a tv series where she portrayed herself as being catnip to all men who crossed her path in spite of a lackadaisical approach to her appearance and hygiene. She’s also the woman who openly discussed being sexually inappropriate with her sister. And, also the woman who lied about being assaulted/raped in college, So, her behavior is intentional – saying ridiculous statements to trigger conversation about her upcoming how-dare-you shame-me-fat-white-girl-self-indulgent narcissism masquerading as declaration of brave feminism. Lena, please, stfu.
LumpyPillows
Got a mirror?
still_onthemark
Lena Dunham is not a gay icon and she’s at most, quasi-neo-gay-icon-adjacent – kind of like Meat Loaf in Rocky Horror Picture Show.
DarkZephyr
I’m not sure she was claiming to be a gay icon. I think she was claiming that she was on the side of LGBT rights and that her fantasy funeral would be to be driven in a coffin through a pride parade. Kinda silly, but nothing for me to get all twitter angry about. Gay twitter rage is getting cringier and cringier all the time.

True story, Im old enough to know her mom, and her aunt. We party in the summer when they com up to the Berkshires to visit a common friend of ours who lives up the road, and both of them are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY cooler and fabulous than lil Lena. Matter of fact, The girl never even comes up in conversation, and not on purpose, we just have much better things to drink, smoke, laugh and gossip about. Its a pity the girl’s so out of touch with reality really. But hey, you cant choose your kids.
LumpyPillows
You really aren’t very nice.

As I commented elsewhere, thankfully, she did not insist on being cremated and having her ashes added to a glitter cannon.
