Melissa Langford, 34, got more than low prices when she went shopping at a New Orleans Family Dollar store. Instead, she got an earful of homophobic comments and was denied service by the foul mouthed cashier.
“My mind was blown. I couldn’t believe the things I was hearing this woman say,” Langford told the Times-Picayune. “It’s one thing if it was a customer in line being ignorant with her friends, but this is the cashier.”
Langford says she was the fifth customer in line at the cash register when she overheard the cashier say she hates gay people, that they are “sick,” and “they got somethin wrong in they head.” After Langford objected, noting that she’s a lesbian, the cashier became combative and refused to ring up her purchases.
After a male customer objected to the cashier’s actions, she refused to serve him as well. The other customer, however, wasn’t about to back down as he confronted the cashier, calling her a “nincompoop” and “asshole.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Langford captured video of the cashier’s behavior, although she says the clerk toned it down dramatically after she realized Langford was recording her rant.
Langford posted the video on Facebook (watch them below), saying “Im really upset. This is the worst antigay shit ive [sic] ever had to deal with in my 34 years.”
She says she contacted the company’s corporate office but no one replied to her complaint. The Times-Picayune also tried to get a statement from the company but was met with silence. The local store manager refused to comment as well.
Langford says the manager refused to get involved during the altercation as well. “She said, ‘I can’t control nothing. She can say and do what she wants,’” she said.

If the company won’t respond to deny the incident that means they know it’s true and they fully support the clerks behavior.

Louisiana…the state where so many family trees do not fork

This is the type of behavior you can expect in a dollar store. Remember, your outrage empowers the person who is trying to upset you.

@Masc Pride:
No, actually that is the saying of somebody trying to prevent a backlash from happening. Outrage is what forced Congress to dump Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Outrage is what drove a case to the Supreme Court to dump DOMA, and outrage is what has forced those states trying to pass anti-LGBT legislation to backtrack because the businesses are pressuring them…why? Because of “Outrage”.
So Nice try.
Masc Pride
@DCguy: No, the DADT repeal was based on actually PROVING that the presence of gay people in the military would not effect the military being able to do its job, which took a lot more than simple outrage. Outrage is just emotion. Your statements actually undermine the people who put hard work into making arguments based on facts instead of emotion.
But nice try.
DCguy
@Masc Pride: you stated: “No, the DADT repeal was based on actually PROVING that the presence of gay people in the military would not effect the military being able to do its job,”

You do realize that that repeal only happened a few years ago. If you are going to try to rewrite history, you probably shouldn’t do it about a topic where everybody on the board was around to see.
Get Equal formed and called for a March against DADT etc… They did Sit in’s in Pelosi’s office after the White House said there would be no movement on DADT that session. Sit in’s a march, pressure on Congress, and gee whiz, what happened? The appeal was pushed through.
Again, if you are going to lie and try to rewrite history, try doing it about a time frame before we were around. It will be easier to fake.
Masc Pride
2011 is more than “a few years ago”. Look who’s trying to rewrite history now. Again, it took more than outrage to end DADT. Outrage doesn’t really solve anything.

..how can people be so rude and so immature? I sometimes believe that if anyone directed that at me I would lose it and literally kill them. How dare they, judge like that, yeah, OK not good for me but people really must stop imagining how a stranger has sex with someone—it is NOT their business…understand.
DCguy
@Masc Pride:
Do you can’t disprove anything I said, so now adjust to claiming it took “MORE” than outrage. Well at least you are altering your story a bit.
The statement from the govt. was, no movement or action would be taken. Cue outrage, action taken.
josephamillikan
Contact the ACLU and seek their legal advice. You should sue them in federal court and ask for punitive damages. That cashier and her manager are violating the law. I am livid.
Masc Pride
I can understand why an outrage junkie is so outraged by what I’ve stated. If they’re not outraged, their whole identity is thrown into question!
DCguy
@Masc Pride:
Was that you still being unable to dispute my facts?
Stache
She looks pretty young with obviously no sense of history. Wasn’t that long ago she would’ve received the same discrimination.

I think people who refuse us service should be shamed publicly – If they think what they’re doing to us, as human being, which is essentially denying us dignity and respect – they should be shamed publicly and/or online – I would of asked for the clerk’s name so Facebook/twitter can have a field day with her.

@DCguy: Sure buddy.

@Masc Pride: Still can’t I see.

Dayum….now I gotta boycott Dollar Store? 😉
DCguy
@Masc Pride:
And again, tried to make a false claim, got called out. Now pouting.
Masc Pride
@DCguy: If that’s the way you’d like to see it, fine by me. I realized that you’re obviously getting some type of weird arousal out of following me around to oppose me at every turn, and I’m simply not interested in pleasuring you any further.
DCguy
@Masc Pride:
And again, that was you being unable to defend your comment.
Goforit
@Masc Pride: Oh come on now. Most of us on this site understand that you get some sort of thrill being contrary, combative and arguing with anyone who states an opinion. Now that DCguy refuted every one of your arguments on this story, you are so desperate as to argue that 5 years would not qualify a “a few years”? You poor thing. Please get some help. At least your lap dog Brian hasn’t come to your defense this time.

Langford says the manager refused to get involved during the altercation as well. “She said, ‘I can’t control nothing. She can say and do what she wants,’” she said.
No she can’t if she’s dealing with the general public. Sounds as if the manager is just as homophobic as well.
Masc Pride
@DCguy: @Goforit: I see you’ve logged into your other account for backup. How pathetic. Let’s not lose sight of how these things always start. It’s you hopping all over my every comment, not the other way around. I tried to politely end this silly conversation twice, which is proof that I’m not getting the same “thrill” out of this. You clearly want to keep the “thrill” going. I’m sure having the last word will bring you to climax. Enjoy!
Goforit
@Masc Pride: Nice try MP. The old “Catch 22”. If I respond to your surrender, I have taken the last word. If I don’t respond I allow you to have the last word. Sort of like asking someone “When did you stop beating your wife?” There is no correct response. But if you want to give up on this topic, tuck your tail between your legs and run home to mommy because the big bad men wouldn’t let you be the bully you always try to be; I would expect nothing less from you. By the way, it might be time for you to drop the “Masc Pride” name. Might I suggest “Little Boy Blue” or maybe “Republidick” Either would be more appropriate.
