Isn’t this just the most wonderful feel-good story to kick off the weekend? Girlfriends Destinee Gates and Becca Fernandez were awarded “Cutest Couple” in the yearbook of Calaveras High School in California. They’ve openly dated since Freshman year, and have been surprised at how most people and their peers in the normally conservative county have been accepting. Even Principal Ric Stitt beams as he describes the tolerance within his community.
If only other schools and administrators would take a lesson from this simple, but beautiful story of acceptance. Destinee and Becca plan to both attend Columbia College in Sonora in the fall. May they continue to find happiness.

I believe that women are better carers than men in the sense that they are wired to incubate and care for babies and children in general. I don’t know if that extends to same-sex relationships, however. Men can be very caring too. I think that, regardless of orientation, men have a natural caring attitude to men that manifests as protection. It harks back to evolution where strong men evolved to protect the weaker men.

In the video it says they’re the only openly lesbian couple at their school and they’ve been voted “cutest couple” by their peers (Good for them!). It doesn’t say if there are any openly gay and/or bisexual boys at their school – let alone any out same-sex male couples. Well maybe there aren’t any.
Whatever, there’s probably quite a lot of gay and bi boys (as well as gay and bi girls) at the school who were afraid to come out who will now feel encouraged to come out by this very significant acceptance of Destinee and Becca. And if, and I stress if, these boys find themselves meeting with widespread prejudice they can now tell their community they’re a bunch of hypocrites because of Destinee and Becca, can’t they?
