Using One Million Moms’ calls for Ellen to be fired as JCPenney’s spokeswoman as a jumping-off point, Howard Stern went into full-on anti-homophobia mode on his show this week.
First, he launches into a scathing attack on homophobes like Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, saying that their anti-gay rhetoric wouldn’t fly if crowds “spat on” them instead of applauding.
Then he defends Rosie against Letterman’s recent tow-truck driver jab. All in all, a very pro-gay 12 mintues for Stern.

I’ve never been a Howard Stern fan, but this is simply great. Just rational, plain speaking and thinking the way everyone should.
SteveC
I love Howard Stern.
Franco
I love Howard. Just love him.
Phantom
Wow, Never thought Howard Stern would defend Ellen in million years.
tony
I’ve listened to Howard Stern for almost twenty years now, and he’s always been
very pro-gay. A few years ago he discussed why he decided to stop saying “fag”.
He gets a lot of shit from people, but he is undoubtedly one of the funniest people
around, and he’s definitely on OUR side.
jason
Isn’t Stern the same man who demeans lesbians by promoting the idea that lesbianism should be designed to titillate sleazy straight guys? Yep, he is.
The man is nothing but a creep. He doesn’t support GLBT rights. He merely supports the idea that women should engage in lesbian activity for the benefit of the sleazy straight guys.
In my opinion, he’s a patriarchal liberal whose acceptance of gay rights is fake and based on titillation.
Note also how it’s only lesbians he seems to be defending. Why isn’t he defending male homosexuals?
In my view, Howard Stern = fake gay advocate creep.
Tea & A
@jason: You’re absolutely right. Stern has never been a friend of the gay community, he’s simply obsessed with lesbians and how they can turn him on.
John
Everyone on here thats bashing Stern is an effing moron. I’ve been a fan since I was a teen and they play “vintage” clips on a station on satellite. When they play clips from the 80s when NO ONE in the media was even mentioning homosexuality, Howard was always on our side. ALL of you idiots that are talking shit have NEVER heard the show. Howard is extremely progressive and he mentions gay rights very, very often. Those terrible celebrities that are now using their “outness” to get on tv (hi Ricky Martin!) shouldnt be celebrated as they’ve spent their careers in the closet. Howard is a god and he’s got a bad rap. Yeah he has lezzies on his shows…because naked HOT lezzie are FUN!
John
@Tea & A: You’re an idiot.
christopher di spirito
Love Howard Stern. Have for many years.
I never understood people who say they dislike him because he’s a homophobe? Usually, it’s the people who never listen to the guy on radio who dislike him the most.
ChrisC
@jason: Have you even listhened to his show? Probably not, because you are a moron after all. He’s had both Johnny Weir and Perez Hilton on and had them describe thier sex lives in graffic detail and has frequently used Gay Men as examples for Gay Rights, as a matter of fact, of all the arguements he has made for Gay Rights these last few years, all of them have revolved around Gay Men! When he called Michelle Bachmann a “cunt” he was talking about why she shouldn’t be attacking GAY MEN!
He changed his opinion about Chaz Bono and started defending Him and other Trans people.
He has also defended bisexual men.
Furthermore, Howard hasn’t had lesbian porn stars on in years, you must be stuck in the 90s.
PS: Your “sleazy straight guys” buzz-sentance is getting REALLY tired, please do come up with something new.
shle896
I love Howard Stern. He’s VERY open minded and defends the underdog to the death. I think a lot of people do the same thing with him as they sometimes do with Joan Rivers, and that is they confuse their comedy acts with their real personalities.
More people need to rail against the Bachmann’s and Santorum’s of the world. Even in the mainstream media, they rarely bring up their homophobia. True, there are many issues that need to be addressed, but plain and simple, those two are BIGOTS. They are OUTRAGEOUS bigots. If these two were saying the same kinds of things, but against blacks, the media would be on it like flies to shit.
It’s shameful that more people don’t stand up to this horrible and frankly, scary talk. Someone needs to shine a light on this. It’s not just a matter of they oppose gay marriage, it’s much more egregious than that. It’s over the top HATE. Where is the hell is the outrage? It amazes me what they get by with saying. I’m sorry, but the two of them are no better than Klan members. They disgust me.
jeff4justice
I’m boycotting JC Penny not becuase they have Ellen as a spokesperson (love her) but becuase I’m the 99% and I cannot afford their expensive ass rich people clothing. ; )

Howard is the man. The anti-homo groups remind me of the Third Reich. Sickening.

It’s weird, because there’s another clip of Howard calling Ellen a cunt on youtube from a few years ago…
Jeff
@jason:
If he wanted to defend hot lesbians, no offense, but he wouldn’t stand up for Rosie. And if you listened to his show, you’d hear him stand up for gay men as well. He does the stuff he does for a good radio show, and if you were to listen to his ad hoc stuff, you’d know he’s a lib. Not a huge Howard fan either, but you are like so many who think that Howard is still Howard circa 1992. Grow up and listen for a change.
Anthony
@jason: Spoken by someone who has obviously never listened to the man a day in his life.
Drew
Howard Stern hasn’t been relevant or popular in decades, and nobody takes him seriously at all. At least he’s for GLBT equality and is against male genital mutilation or circumcision. I do remember when Howard would joke about femme lesbians and how they make the ratings for radio and movies go up and how a lot of men find them hot.
John
@Drew: You’re right Drew, thats why he’s one of the highest paid people in entertainment. Thats why celebrities go to him and give an honest interview. I’m not a Chaz fan but hearing her interview with Stern humanized her, it wasnt like that stupid bitch Ann Curry.
Helden von Heute
I have been a Stern fan since high school in the 80’s. He, in his own irreverent way, was one of the first people to openly embrace the gay community with his humour. Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans, etc…Through him, I learned to laugh at myself while also being okay as a gay teen from a small fundamentalist christian town. It’s nice knowing that he has chosen to use his celebrity and HUGE listening audience in order to defend us. Too bad our president doesn’t have the balls that The King of All Media does.
slappy magoo
I’m always leery of people who argue “if you have a problem with the things I like, then obviously you don’t know anything about the things I like!” But in this case I have to be that guy. Stern is strongly for the rights of gay people to live their lives how they choose and to find happiness…unless those people are on his show, in which case he reserves the right to goof on him. Which is pretty much how he feels about EVERYONE (I’m also not a big fan of the cutesy-poo phrase “equal opportunity offender,” though it pretty much sums him up). He also has gay guys on to discuss their sex life. While he had suspicions one of his employees was gay, and goofed on him for being a supposedly straight guy who cried over Michael Jackson and had no rap with women, once that worker came out of the closet, he embraced him and applauded his bravery. Still goofed on him. Wants to hear all about his bad attempts at a sexual life because he’s kind of a goof. Because he goofs on everyone. Rosie O’Donnell has a show on Sirius principally because of her much-improved relationship with Howard, who became a fan of hers AFTER she came out of the closet and became “real” as opposed to what he perceived as a hacky hypocritical hostile comic (something to a degree Rosie admits is true). The personalities on Sirius OutQ often sing Howard’s praises. There will always be a place and time where Howard wants to hear sexy lesbian stories, just like he wants to hear sexy stories involving straight women (I think he just likes sexy stories that involves women, lesbian stories just bumps up the quantity). But take it from me, a complete stranger on the internet (so why would you have any reason to doubt me?), Howard’s one of the best supporters of the gay community one’s likely to find on the media. It’s just not a fawning sycophantic friend who treats gay people like precious porcelain dolls that need to be be treated delicately lest they break. He reserves the right to bust a gay person’s metaphorical balls just as he reserves the right to defend their honor against people who would like to reduce or eliminate their rights. He’s like the big brother who insists “no one’s allowed to pick on you but me.” And those that think otherwise should risk some time listening to the show (have a drink to steel yourself first, if you must).
HeroQueero
Perhaps Howard is evolving. Remember, it’s never too late to change. It’s just usually really hard. But I have to admire him for choosing not to use the word “fag” anymore. It’s crazy, but many comedians and comedies still use the word “faggot” in their acts! No one can say “nigger” anymore but the majority is still okay with “fag” or “faggot”. Both words were created out of hate and ignorance. We are a species that relies on communication. Therefore, our words have power. Allowing hateful speech to evolve around you is a good way to create a hateful community. The best way to combat this is to stop using the words yourself and also by standing up to those who insist on using words as weapons of hatred. You should also consider young LGBT kids in your life. They use the words often in their speech and slang but don’t know where it came from. Once they learn the origin of that word as a euphemism, they tend to think its not funny anymore. But take heart, I know we can overcome this hatred and bigotry as all other struggling groups have in the past.
calvin
I really like Howard stern. I also think what he is doing is fantastic. I think the majority of his audience is straight men, and maybe all the pro gay things he says may help influence some otherwise ignorant people.
shle896
@slappy magoo: I think you’re taking him and his show way too seriously, even more seriously than he takes himself. He’s not Glen Beck or Rush Limbaugh who actually believes their own bullshit. He’s a COMEDIAN and making fun of everybody (including himself and his self-proclaimed small penis)is his schtick.
His diatribe about Santorum and Bachmann is a rare moment of seriousness for him (and his millions of listeners). We all need to call out the homophobic bigoted Republicans on their brand of “Christianity” so if Howard Stern wants to do that, I’m all for it. Certainly the mainstream media isn’t going to do it.

The reason that liberals stand up for gay rights isn’t that they like us – in fact, they particularly dislike the male version of homosexuality. The reason they stand up for us is because they know that, if we ditch the liberal cause, liberalism is finished.
Gay men are the lynch-pin of liberalism. If we leave the movement, everything will come down like a house of cards. Feminists will collapse, blacks will collapse. The coalition of the willing will no longer exist.
Ann
Oh my g… Never in a million years did I think I’d appreciate a Howard Stern rant, but this makes me strangely proud of him. I’m so weirded out right now…
p.s. Jason–SO not cool to stereotype all straight liberals like that. Why so pessimistic?
tevii
@jason: you are an idiot. Howard Stern defends male gays all the time. He comments all the time how everybody deserves to be happy and if you love a man you should never have to hide it. You have no idea what you are talking about and should really shut up
tevii
@jason: You sure are a pessimistic hateful person arent you? Why dont you try listening to the man before you pass judgment? The rest of your comments on this page are as ignorant as they come. “The reason that liberals stand up for gay rights isn’t that they like us – in fact, they particularly dislike the male version of homosexuality”
What BS this comment is… You are truly a moron.
jason
I don’t resile from what I’ve said. Howard Stern is a creep and that’s that.
His disrespect for lesbians is legendary. He objectified them in a “phony acceptance based on titillation” sort of way.
Howard is a maggot of the first order. We don’t want his support. Fuck off, Howard.
NYMATGM
@jason: Hahahaha, really? Blacks and feminism will collapse? While I’m all for discussing how we gays have had a positive impact on the liberal cause, your views on the gay community are exposing your insane egomania.
Thanks for the belly laugh though!
Jessica
Not to mention he had Chaz on the show and really liked him.
NativeSonKY
@jason: Wow – maybe your attitude is why you feel so many people hate you? Ever think of that? I have 2 brothers and 5 sisters – I’m of the Christian faith and the rest of my siblings are Catholic (same Dad, different Moms). We all live in Kentucky, one of the most backward-ass states in the US. BUT – we are all liberal Democrats and we have all had family members and friends who are gay. My brothers and I have listened to Howard since the mid-90s and have watched as he has mellowed and become more responsible in his comments on certain topics. His stance on gays cannot be disputed IMHO. If we were all as hateful as you sound like you are we would have never listened to him in the first place! I think you need a hug or something…there’s definitely something going on with you that you need to examine. BTW – yes, me and my 2 brothers and 4 of my 5 sisters are straight, but we love the sister who is gay as much as we do anybody else in the family. You want to know who the people are that we liberals really hate? It’s the ones who try to shove EVERYBODY into some kind of “box” where they think they belong! We as HUMANS are multifaceted individuals who can see beyond your “box” and are not constrained to appreciate others’ lives and to let them live them as THEY seem fit. The same to you – I leave you to your evil thoughts.

I think all of you Howard haters are taking him far too seriously. Certainly more seriously than he takes himself.
