When I first went to SF Pride in 2003, being from a small town, it was a real life affirming experience to attend and see that there were people of all walks of life who were accepting and celebrating LGBT folk.
8 years later as a jaded LGBT equality activist, I now see past the illusion of the rainbow of the so-called LGBT community. The events are essentially nothing more than commercials for corporations (that you have to pay $20 at LA to be marketed to) and one big exhibitionism party – which is fine with me as a sexual libertarian. If you’re informed like me, you already know all the countless LGBT groups duplicating the same objectives and what there up to so there’s really nothing new to experience.
I went to LA Pride for the first time, got my YouTube interviews, and was over it. I’d rather be on a drive or cuddling in bed with a nice guy who loves me.
After going to the festival late Sunday night, I walked around WeHo and as a guy who does not drink felt like a fish out of water. I got on Grindr to find another sober dude to hang out and romance with but no luck. I did find plenty of bottoms eager to bareback for me. No thanks, the HIV med pharmaceutical companies are doing fine without me being another customer.
Nonetheless, thinking out my hometown, Yuba-Sutter (north of Sacramento), I get sad about contemplating the disparity between the may rural/suburb/small town areas that can’t even pull off organizing an LGBT group/club/center let alone have a Pride event where we too can litter the streets, get wasted (for those who drink), and indulge in debauchery excess. After all, what else is there to aspire for within the LGBT community?

@jeff4justice: I’m sorry that you’re so sad and bitter. There’s a lot that the gay community has to offer. Perhaps someday things will get better for you. And…while iDavid’s comment may not be written well enough for your comprehension, his point is dead on…if you don’t like your life, CHANGE IT! Your attitude actually seems to be the epitome of what I read you to be against, shallow and vapid.

And of course neither of you have any offers to help me change whatever it is you two perceive as needing changing with me.
Having started the first visible LGBT group in my hometown, working for No on 8, and being an independent activist, I’m content with what I’ve done to try to better things regardless of what anonymous strangers think about it.

The link I provided is part of a commentary series titled “I Have No Gay/LGBT Pride” and the commentary concludes with a brainstorm of solutions for making things better.
I’m a realist. I see the LGBT community as more self-destructing due to it’s glorification of shallow pursuits; unsafe sex, waste of resources; LGBT on LGBT discrimination and segregation; the waste of resources and unfocus by the countless LGBT groups that duplicate the same objectives while their EDs make 6 figures and they leave behind most small town LGBT folk; and the lack of mentorship for poor LGBT folk.
Indeed, the LGBT community is full of wonderful people who do many awesome things. Nonetheless, just as is the case with mainstream society, the majority are short sighted people who live in fear and delusion while clinging to endless escapism.
Just as I see past the illusion of the rainbow, I see past the 2-party charade, Obama’s hopium, and much of the awful stuff that prevails in America.
I’m an idealist trapped in the body of someone who sees the Matrix or the wizard behind the curtain and it’s very fucking bleak. Nonetheless, I persevere in doing all I can to be happy and contribute to what I hope contributes to bettering things.

Lastly, I actually enjoy some of my anger. As Cornel West says (something to the effect), humanity should never be complacent to suffering. Righteous anger towards injustice and suffering is a good, normal, healthy, moral, appropriate thing.

Change comes from within. There’s nothing that I can do to help you change your life. If you perceive your bitterness to be happiness, then good for you. Have a happy life.
As I said previously, the gay community has a lot to offer. Perhaps when you are a little older you will see that being gay doesn’t have to fit in the little box that you’re are putting it in.

Change comes from within is yet another useless, “positive-thinking” cliche line – as if who we are, what we think, how we feel is not impacted by people in the world around us.
Go tell a starving person that.
Also, go tell the LGBT folk in my hometown that the LGBT community has a lot to offer. Next time a poor LGBT person cannot afford rent, health needs, or a vehicle repair, let’s see how many donations they’ll get from the big LGBT groups.
Anyway, my links are on my screen name and if you ever want to have a substantial, non-overly simplistic conversation I welcome it.
