From his lips to God’s ears: Rick Santorum predicts that it would be “suicidal” for the Republican party to embrace marriage equality.
The losing Senator from Pennsylvania and losing presidential candidate (and just all-around loser) says that the conversation around marriage equality now echoes the debate about reproductive rights in the 1970s.
Arguing some wobbly history, Santorum says that the party didn’t change then, even though some of its members did. (Someone remind Rick that his party wasn’t always as anti-abortion as it is now.)
Gazing deeply into his crystal ball, Rick predicts that the Supreme Court will uphold DOMA because the Court “learned its lesson about trying to predict where the American public is going on issues and trying to find rights in the Constitution that sit with the fancy of the day.”
Santorum was specifically taking aim at Republican Senators Rob Portman and Mark Kirk, who have both come out in favor of marriage equality. More interesting is where Santorum took his pot shot: in an interview with the Des Moines Register, the first stop for would-be presidential candidates. Seems like Rick is already looking at 2016.
With views like his, we’re confident his current electoral streak will remain unbroken.

Santorum is about as relevant as a buggy whip. At least Sarah Palin had the good grace to die quietly and leave us alone when her 15 minutes were up. Santorum is like herpes — he simply won’t go away. What a douche!

All republican are stupid and say stupid thing what new?. DEAD republican good republican.

He is both right and wrong. It is suicidal for the Republican party to embrace equality openly. However, SCOTUS will most likely overturn DOMA. Also, he has about the same chance of making it onto the presidential ballot in 2016 as an openly gay Republican candidate in Montana has of becoming a Representative.

@DOFEK: Yes, because they disagree with you on a few issues we should line them up and shoot them. Way to play that victim card!

Actually, Santorum probably has a decent chance of getting the nomination. Ever since 2000, the Republicans have tended to go with the runner-up of the previous primary (McCain in 2008, Romney in 2012).
And honestly, I’m torn. I’d prefer to see the Republicans have a sane person on the ticket, if only for the novelty value, but the comedy lover in me is just itching to see Santorum repeatedly stick his foot in his mouth.

Rick Santorum was without a doubt molested by a catholic priest when he was younger. Now he wants revenge on the gay community, whom he misblames for it. To me, that’s obvious.
When many other anti-gay politicians spew homophobic filth, they’re just grandstanding. They are playing to a crowd of clowns who don’t understand politics but do understand their simple prejudices, fear, and biases.
But with Santorum it’s personal. Look at his body language when he talks about gays. Body stiffens, eyes narrow, face contorts, tone of voice changes. He looks like a serial killer, getting all excited seconds before leaping out at his next victim.
IMHO anyways, Santy has some deep, dark personal secrets and pushing the right buttons will bring that out for the schaudenfreude of the public.

@tdx3fan: Ooo I like the lining up idea.

@tdx3fan: – the higher ups in the GOP are privately hoping the Supreme Court overturns DOMA (as well as Prop 8). This would prevent them from having to continue their blatant disregard for equality while allowing them refuge to complain about activist liberal judges. In their mind they’ll get the best of both worlds although, as usual, they’ll overplay their hand and turn this into yet nother reason for voters to find the Republican party bigoted and irrelevant.

I personally think this turd is gay. I also believe no one wanted a relationship with him so he is striking out. I think a night in the sack with a good man will do wonders for him.

@GordonSoleil: There will be no “sane” Republican on the ticket, because such people don’t exist anymore. They switch parties or they leave. And anyway like you, I am attracted to a Santorum nom for the sheer low comedy potential of it all.
@MK Ultra: Interesting thought. You might actually have something, although my assumption has always been that he’s just another pathetic closet case.
Wonder what he’s going to do when one of his kids comes out to The Advocate? I can’t see him pulling a Portman; he hasn’t the insight or the guts.

@RichieW: That’s my instinct too. Didn’t Larry Craig spend a whole political career pretending to hate what he was really longing for…?

This idiot is coming to speak at a Michigan high school this month on leadership!?! SMH. Some of the students got together and pulled 17,000 dollars out of their butts for his speaking fee. The spokesperson was a blk-gay-faced kid with a bow tie that will be toe tapping any day now.

@MK Ultra: I bet he’s a closet case. I bet not only he is a closet case but this is his way of hiding who he really is. I bet if they put the erection blood pressure cuff on him, I bet he gets a big woody over gay porn. He’s putting way more energy into protecting his version of ‘God’s’ plan then he really needs to. Your right, something is wrong with his behavior.

@tdx3fan: NO! nincompoops! Republican should be killed not heard!! AdamHomo
