Madonna came out of hiding after that whole Prince Billboard Music Awards debacle to make a surprise appearance on The Tonight Show last night where she sang a slowed-down rendition of her first Top 10 hit “Borderline.”
And the crowd went wild.

The performance oozed nostalgia and was a much-needed reminder of why we fell in love with the singer in the first place. Of course, her real reason for being there wasn’t to win back our good graces. She was there to meet President Obama.

Though the two didn’t actually share the stage together (that would simply be too much American royalty on one screen), Madge posted several photos on Instagram before and after the show expressing her excitement.

There wasn’t anything wrong with her Prince tribute than the snottiness of b-yotchy queens. She started off better than half of the acts on the show simply by singing live, and then turned in a pretty good performance despite crying through parts. She was more in tune than Rihanna managed.

@tarc: I couldn’t agree more. These internet trolls are a joke. The young singers & their autotune are as empty as the generation that bashes Madonna from their keyboards. Even Adele can’t seem to make it through an entire tour. Madonna has more talent than 20 Lavato’s.

Madonna couldn’t serve up that performance of Love on the Brain if Maria Callas had coached her. Even when she’s barely dancing, her vocals are far weaker than they should be. Hell, Ke$ha sounded better at the Billboard awards!

Madonna is the sum of every part that goes into her act – dancers, costumes, video, etc. To close your eyes, ignore those things & judge them all based on vocal merit alone, she’d lose hard every time. Now every time I see old Madge I just see Drake wincing after she unsuccessfully tried to seduce him on stage. That was so embarrassing to watch. It was nice of Obama to smile and entertain the old has-been’s ego.

@tarc: The fact that she’s an internationally famous singer who sounds like the runner-up in a high school talent contest is what’s wrong with her performance. We all know Madonna strength isn’t her voice, it’s her production, so if she wants us to like it she’s gotta bring out the dancers, sets, and costumes. Otherwise, give the spot to someone with the voice to sing it.
