Here’s some promising news out of California, where a majority of voters say they oppose Proposition 8, a measure that would overturn this year’s gay marriage win:
A majority of California voters oppose a ballot initiative to ban gay marriage, though they are evenly split on the practice itself, according to a poll released Wednesday.
…
A majority of likely voters, 54 percent, oppose ending gay marriage, compared with 40 percent who support it, the poll said. The result is similar to the findings of a Field Poll in July, which found that 51 percent of likely California voters opposed ending gay marriage, while 42 percent said they supported it.But when it comes to general attitudes about gay marriage, voters in the Public Policy Institute poll are evenly split, at 47 percent for and against â as they have been for the past three years.
Eh. That’s fine by us. Just don’t go revoking any hard fought rights…
Woof
Don’t let news like this allow us to become complacent. ALL of us must still show up and vote against this hateful prop.

I hope the proponents of Gay marriage use the Religious Right’s words against them. What is laughable is how shrill they are about nothing! Over and over I hear things from the RR like “Civilization is LOST if Gays can marry.”
How? They can still go to their Christ-ee Craz-ee Churches and believe the earth was created in 7 calendar days. They can still teach their children to hate Gays and imply that Jesus was White with straight hair and blue eyes.
They just can’t legally discriminate. What a concept!

It’s much too close for any of us to become complacent, I’d wager.

i can’t remember who said it, but i think the quote is:
“they might not want to give us the right to marry, but they sure as hell don’t want to be known as the people who took it away.”
when passive agressiveness work in our favor.

Jaroslaw: Hooray for “They can still go to their Christ-ee Craz-ee Churches and believe the earth was created in 7 calendar days. They can still teach their children to hate Gays and imply that Jesus was White with straight hair and blue eyes.”
PLUS, of course they CAN discriminate against the homos–no law compels any church to perform a wedding ceremony. So the Holy Roller Universal Church Of Bible-Thumping Dodos doesn’t like same-sex marriage? Then hell, guys, don’t do ’em!
Jaroslaw
OK, I didn’t spell it out, EMB, what I meant was they can’t discriminate against us in any meaningful legal ways EXCEPT to not perform marriage ceremonies in their churches. Which I didn’t think I had to mention because no Gay person would want one anyway.
Otherwise, glad you liked my post. I think. đ

I did I did I totally did!! Any discernable snark was most surely not directed at YOU!
Jaroslaw
EMB – love that enthusiasm. Thanks. Do you live anywhere near Michigan? đ

I should have added after “HOW?” – the vast majority of people will still be straight, the sky didn’t fall in Massachusetts – the White House didn’t cave in because John Kennedy fornicated like crazy in the White House….. I’m not just being cute here – people, reporters, the media, moderators in debates should CALL THESE people out on their rubbish. As a person who does believe in God and Jesus, He/They must very displeased at all the hate spewed Their Name.

as some of the recent benefactors of same-sex marriage in CA and maybe the MOST recent gays from the state of Texas (where we’re still viewed as sodomites) to be married, we truly hope prop 8 is defeated!
we were married in west hollywood by the very kind and gracious mayor Jeffrey Prang. it’s a day we will never forget. hopefully, sometime in our lifetime, we will see this kind of equality spread all across our great country.
and just for clarification: we didn’t need a piece of paper to prove our commitment. it’s just nice to be able to enjoy the same rights and priveledges as any hetero couple in this nation. [of course, these “rights” mean nothing in TX…but we can always pretend.]

TDUB – very happy for you that you found someone and got married. I think I’m pretty close to finding that someone too! But for most folks, that piece of paper does mean something. I’m not speaking for you, maybe your commitment is just as strong as without it, but signing itt means legally joining your checking accounts, filing taxes and a lot of other things. A study was done about living together is not a good indicator of who can stay married. Why? LTP can pick up and leave anytime, they have separate finances, no commitment no major joint obligations, not to mention annoying habits one can bear temporarily would take on a completely different flavor if for a lifetime. That analysis makes sense to me.
