SONGS FROM HELL

Margaret Cho, Joan Rivers Pitch In To Produce Musical Comedy “Shirley Phelps-Roper In Concert, Live From Hell”

roperIt’s about time someone shoved a proverbial sock in Shirley Phelps-Roper’s mouth. The bigoted Westboro Baptist Church ringleader has been spewing hate around the country for so long, it’s finally earned her a starring role in a New York City theater production. Kind of.

In a creative counter-protest of the WBC, playwright John J. Caswell, Jr. is seeking funds on IndieGogo to produce a new musical comedy starring the hilarious Erin Markey called God Hates This Show: Shirley Phelps-Roper In Concert, Live From Hell.

Set in “a sadistic flame filled haunted house/lounge in Hell where the fashion is flawless,” the show “imagines Shirley…as recently deceased, banished to Hell, and forced for all eternity to sing her favorite earthy songs.” And if that doesn’t sound good enough, the show received a stamp of approval from Willam Belli herself (below)!

Margaret Cho, Joan Rivers and Ann Bannon are among other celebrities showing support for the show — each of them has graciously donated autographed prize packages for people willing to become major backers. There’s a plethora of awesome gifts for those willing to pledge funds, including the amazing “God Hates Bags” tote, tons of gay swag and a phone call from Satan himself!

Best of all, the producers plan to donate 50% of any funds above production costs to Equality House, the rainbow-colored home purchased by Planting Peace to spruce up the WBC’s home neighborhood. Last month, Equality House hosted a same-sex marriage on the front lawn, and helped 5-year-old Jayden Sink spread love with “pink lemonade for peace.”

The show is set to premiere October 16-20 at HERE in New York City. For more information on the show and instructions on how to donate, visit IndieGogo.
