On Sunday Queerty published a post about the hypocrisy shown by some gay porn studios who claim to care about their performers’ HIV health while not insisting on universal condom use. Mason Wyler, the HIV-positive porn star, drafted a response.
Last week, RawFuckClub.com released a scene I did in December with owner Owen Hawk and his boyfriend Brandon Hawk. Condoms were not used during the shoot. I don’t have any sort of ideological reason behind why I chose to do what I did but I do have reasons.
I did it because my career had been at a standstill (or dead) for nearly nine months. I sent out emails, made phone calls, and tweeted to little or no avail. I got offers from plenty of bareback studios but the big studios, which are “safe-sex” studios, weren’t interested. There are many justifications as to why my time in the mainstream part of the industry is seemingly over. I don’t look as good as I used to… especially compared to who’s out there today. I’ve worked for nearly every major studio/website there is when companies covet exclusivity. I make headlines and gain attention for horrible things. I’m HIV Positive and everybody knows it. I’ve been in this business for six years, that’s a long time for porn, maybe too long but I can’t bring myself to throw in the towel so when RawFuckClub.com gave me an offer too good to refuse, I took it. I love having sex on camera and I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do. Not yet anyway.
I did it because I wanted to get fucked by Owen Hawk. Out of all the performers in all of gay porn, bareback and condom, Owen has always been and will always be my ideal top. I have spent the last few years getting to know Owen and in that time my desire to work with him has only grown stronger. He has created a bareback production company which shares similarities in quality with the bigger “safe-sex” studios. His roster of attractive models (his boyfriend and himself included) buck the ugly trend that a lot of the other American Bareback studios create and perpetuate. And his pay scale is inline with what I’m used to, which contrary to popular belief, bareback porn usually pays far less than condom porn. But above all that, Owen Hawk is simply one hot man who on many levels, fully understands me. Ultimately, I chose to go with Owen Hawk and RawFuckClub.com over the other studios because his offer was far more appealing all-around.

I did it because I prefer bareback sex and I’d rather be with other openly HIV positive men. It’s understandable for HIV negative people to fear working with me due to my status, even when a condom is part of the equation, but that fear also turns me off to them. If everyone is turned off then why bother? Even if a major “safe-sex” studio wanted me, I’m not sure I could shoot with a HIV negative partner or with a partner of unknown status (unlike my situation, most models HIV statuses are not revealed to the public or within the industry itself), even if said partner was totally fine with me. A part of me would be afraid I could possibly spread infection to them which would hinder my performance. As it stands right now, I feel more comfortable being in bareback with models who I know are positive.
My video has reinvigorated online debate about the role gay porn serves in the gay community and the correlation between bareback porn and viewers participating in bareback sex. My opinion is that porn’s role is to entertain not to educate and that bareback sex does not influence real life behaviors. I truly enjoyed making the video with Owen and Brandon. I hope some of you take it for what it is (entertainment) and enjoy watching it.

I am not the one ignoring anything. I am merely saying this. I would not let this guy housesit for me. He is an actor in porn films, traditionally a very oversexed, partying, drug using, unconcerned demographic when it comes to things. Well if you’re going to be in favor of bareback porn this is pretty much an ideal situation. EVERYBODY’s status in this scene is known. Yes, but in your numbers you are also trying to mask the truth. While gays may make up around 50% of AIDS diagnosis, what you fail to state are the actual number of people getting diagnosed.
According to the CDC in 2008 aproximately 23,000 gays were diagnosed. Out of a population of say 300 million in the United states. that is 0.007666666666666667 of the Country.
Lets also figure out an estimate for gays in America. Some studies say 10%, some claim 20%, the christian right claims like 4% lets say somewhere in the middle, 7%. So out of a population of 300,000,000 the number of gays would be estimated at 21,000,000.
Out of that number, the 23,000 diagnosed in 2008 account for 0.10952380952380952.
Lastly, according to 2006 stats, the latest the CDC has that I can see, 1, 106, 400 people are living in the U.S. with AIDS. Lets pretend that ALL of them are gay. Even if that was the case…which it isn’t, that would still only be 5% of the gay population in the country if you think gays make up 7% of the population. If you think they make up 10% it’s even lower. And since gays make up around half of the AIDS cases, it is really more like 2-2.5%
So again, yes, it is horrible that people are still getting AIDS, but to try to pretend that what has happend to this porn actor reflects on the entire gay community is ridiculous.

The above statement makes sense if HIV didn’t rapidly evolve to create more resistant strains of the disease. When one strain of HIV that is resistant to two kinds of medications and another strain of HIV, which is resistant to three kinds of medications, combine, they produce a strain of HIV that is resistant to ALL FIVE TYPES OF MEDICATION.
This may not be a big deal for you and your partner of choice if you already have the disease and don’t mind shaving some time off your life, but if you then have bareback sex with someone else, YOU ARE TRANSFERRING ALL OF THOSE RESISTANCES.
HIV medications are NOT cures. Overtime, the disease identifies the medications, how they work, and responds to them. You have to continuously switch your line-up of drugs. If you run out, you run out. There’s nothing left to do.

I could not agree with Mason more when he states that porn should be for entertainment not education. I don’t know of anyone who is so naive, stupid, or pathetic that they rented porn and watched it to then repeat when they saw in porn before having a sexual encounter with someone else. The messages pulled out of these quotes suggest that we are diseased, damaged goods who deserve what we get and are not deserving of compassion or understanding. We should even be denied treatment and left to die.
Unless and until the myths, half-truths, and misinformation that has gained a major foothold in the psyche of America’s gay population is acknowledged and addressed, HIV will still flourish, born from ignorance, fear and repression. And the stigmatization of HIV+ people, both by our own people and by those who seek to erdicate homosexuality altogether, will continue unabated.
That’s what we should be ashamed of.

You are confusing and distorting what I said. Most SANE, healthy people would do whatever they could to AVOID HIV infection. For those who are/were unfortunate enough to contract HIV/AIDS despite taking precautions, my comments were not directed at them.
Mason is the exception because he deliberately chose not to give a fuck with his “anything goes” mentality toward sex. Knowing the risks, and knowing what the repercussions would be, he threw it all to the wind and welcomed a deadly disease into his body.

There was no superstraing of AIDS int he NYC party scene. What happened was, a few people got infected and progressed amazingly fast into full blown AIDS so there was an assumption that there was a newer much more agressive strain. What actually happened was that all of the people had really crushed their immune systems with meth etc… and so already were in a weakened state when they became infected and that is what let to the much quicker progression.

People here seem to be mistaking folk’s condemnation of his attitude towards the disease, being a ‘public figure’, as being the same thing as condemnation of people who have HIV in general. Having sex without a condom can DEFINITELY lead to one partner spreading more of the virus to the other, and vice versa. Also, HIV has more mutations than almost any other virus on this planet; there is no guarantee that your positive partner and you have the same strain of the virus, and so you can become infected with several different strains. Two HIV positive partners having sex without a barrier method can and will increase viral load in both partners, leading to faster debilitation and annihilation of the immune system and therefore will put you on the fast track to developing AIDS.

I think the guy is brave as hell, and his ethics deserve some reflection. Read what people like Dr. Gallant at John Hopkins has to say. All the experts I’ve read say this is believed to ONLY happen soon after initial infection–within the first year, if at all. If you’re on meds with an undetectable viral load, your chances of infecting someone goes down to 1-3%. Besides, they are adults and are keeping the virus within those already infected. The real problem are all the people who go around fucking everyone bareback and probably have HIV, but tell their partners they are negative and “I don’t ever do this, but you were so hot.” They know they have a good chance of being poz, but they lie and say they just got tested. There’s a huge difference between moral contempt, and a loss of respect for people who knowingly enhance the chance and speed of their own death for no other reason that they would prefer to have sex as a job than look elsewhere for work.
Yes, they’re consenting adults. And they should do what they want with their own bodies. But despite the best intentions, someone will always be walking around carrying a deadlier version of HIV with them. The chance that something may spread that disease to someone else is slim, and I’m not afraid of it per se, but it is rather reckless to accept blindly without a thought the fact that your body is potentially becoming more dangerous to yourself and others.
If you’re okay with that, fine. But please don’t deny and people that you are “not diseased.” This is a false sense of security. That’s what HIV is. Its transmission enters your body via some exterior means. It doesn’t just show up and suddenly your life is harder. Somebody made a reckless decision. Whether it was you, a sexual partner, the simple forgetfulness of not wearing gloves etc in at-risk occupations, needle-sharing, blood transfusions, or for any given reason, somebody made a bad judgment call.
The only exception is when exposure is necessary to save another life. And even then (at the alternate risk of an IMMEDIATE loss of life), you can’t deny that you have a strain of something that is transmittable.
I think continuing sex work (especially bareback sex work) is one of those reckless decisions. There is nothing that I can think of that is so fulfilling that I would choose to endanger another human life for the simple sake of its continued enjoyment. Especially when there are precautionary measures available.
What it comes down to is that I think it is a selfish decision. I don’t think it should be illegal, but it seems reckless and I should not have to hold the situation in high esteem simply because of it sucks to have HIV.

To that end, and looking practically at the matter, two individuals who have the exact same strain of HIV cannot reinfect themselves with a different virus – and thus should be able to do whatever the hell they want, on camera or otherwise. @Drake: No, I’d say you were the uneducated one. Although there are many strains of hiv out there have been so few cases of superinfection (multiple strains) that it’s almost unheard of. As of 2005, with complete statistics on the 80’s and 90’s, there were 16 confirmed superinfections WORLDWIDE.

Wow! 92 posts on this issue and only 1 post mentions the most important part of the entire discussion. Viral Load. That is the actual number of HIV cells in the bloodstream. Usually measured as parts per milliliter. A successful drug regimen, usually of 3 different anti-hiv drugs, reduces the viral load to UNDETECTABLE.
You don’t transmit the HIV disease during sex when no measurable virus is left in your blood to give it to someone else. This is why taking your meds is so important. It stops a person’s HIV from further damaging one’s immune system. At that point the HIV virus is only alive in a person’s body in certain hard to reach places, places not directly fed by one’s own circulatory system.
An HIV+ person with an undetectable viral load is as safe to have sex with as any other non-infected person. There isn’t any AVAILABLE virus to do the infecting.
AND, as far as the multiple strain question. There are only a couple of strains of the virus. Most people with HIV in the U.S. have the strain known as HIV-1. Unless a U.S. citizen has unprotected sex with a person with a viral load above UNDETECTABLE who has HIV-2, which is the most common AFRICAN strain, the U.S. person will continue to have the HIV-1 strain. Even persons with the two different strains don’t usually crossinfect one another. As someone wrote earlier, less than 20 cases worldwide since the beginning of this disease.

Actually it’s been proven in numerous studies, without a viral load HIV is non-transmissible almost 99.9%. That’s about the same as a condom. So if someone is on medications and without a viral load, you’re more likely to probably win the lottery and get hit by a tsunami than get HIV from a person who is undetectable. Sure lock up and shoot all the people with HIV, but being that gonorrhea is almost completely resistant to antibiotics; something new will come up. Everyone should be responsible for themselves and assume everyone has something. If you take the risk, own it as it is your responsibility and don’t blame it on someone else or judge others behaviors. These are personal choices that each of us makes and if Mason wants to keep fucking that his choice. I think he’s still a hottie whom happens to be poz now. I’ve never had an STD, and yeah, I’m kinda proud of it (I’m not wealthy, so my health and fitness are important to me and others). But, Mason is hot, he’s doing what he does best, and he can probably pay for his own healthcare. It’s not 1985. I have no wish to get into disputes over condom v bareback. Mason and Owen as gay porn actors I have followed since their début in gay porn films and as models for adult magazines I like then a lot.
When Mason and Owen worked for “mainstream” major gay porn studios, there appears to have been an army of fans and devotees lusting after them. Now that they are HIV positive, some treat them as though they are from a different planet and untouchable. This is a shallow view IMHO. Bareback performing aside, I am still attached to both these men with the same level of respect.
Owen was a joy to watch in many films and now a director/studio owner he has gained a lot of fans as has Mason as a performer. I have had some hot fantasies about both men and still do. Bareback may not my preference, but some of the stars who perform have not faded or lost their shine.
