MD Republican Del. Says Gay-Marriage Efforts Drove Him To Drink

Screen Shot 2013-01-14 at 11.07.38 PMMaryland Del. Don Dwyer (R-Pasadena) doesn’t know when to leave well enough alone.

In August, he admitted he had been drinking before his powerboat slammed into another craft, causing a crash that left him with a broken left foot, puncture wounds in his neck, and other injuries. The accident also wounded a 5-year-old girl, who suffered a skull fracture.

Now, with the Generally Assembly starting up again, he sat down with the Maryland Gazette to explain exactly why he drinks so much.

At first Dwyer blamed the 2011 dissolution of his marriage of more than 30 years. But as the interview continues, it becomes clear Dwyer blames some of his old pals in the Maryland Legislature for shifting their position and voting in favor of same-sex marriage in 2012.

Kach and Costa, of Deale, were the only two House Republicans to vote for the bill. It passed the House by two votes in February. “I had no time to do anything,” Dwyer said. “Had I known earlier, I could have taken some action.”

It was petitioned to the November ballot and passed by 52 percent of voters state wide. Voters in Dwyer’s district, however, rejected it.

“That betrayal really affected me,” he said. “I was physically ill. You pour your heart into an issue like that and it’s devastating.”

Somebody clearly hasn’t hit rock bottom yet.
