Friday was Neil Giuliano’s last day as president of GLAAD, an occasion he celebrated in West Hollywood at the group’s Thank GLAAD It’s PRIDE event. Starting in September, he’ll be succeeded by Jarrett Barrios, a former Massachusetts state legislator and former president of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts. Barrios, 40, will be GLAAD’s youngest-ever president. He’s Cuban-American, bilingual, and hot — all proper qualifications to join Gay Inc. But sorry boys, he’s taken: He’s been shacked up with partner Doug Hattaway for 16 years, and they’ve got two teenage sons.
Meanwhile: In a media release issued today about Barrios’ new post, Giuliano’s name was not mentioned once. (Photo via)

Yummy! This dude makes me want to get behind GLAAD. I won’t because I still believe that supporting local organizations is much more important then throwing money at big name nfp corporations, but at least they can pick some hot flesh. Personally, I’d still rather see him as a male model than president of GLAAD.
Cam
Well I mean he could hardly do less than what the big arganizations have done in the last year.
Tim
I know you can’t look anywhere on this site without seeing an incredibly hot guys wearing little clothing, but maybe can we talk about former Senator Barrios’ incredible list of accomplishments and not just his looks?
1. First openly gay and first Latino senator in MA elected by a largely white, Catholic district
2. Broke fundraising records in the senate
3. Has been an advocate for human rights for two decades
4. President of a trend-setting health care foundation that worked to get everyone quality care and coverage
Tim
Also, they’re married. Not shacked up.
M Shane
Look at Solomnese he’s ugly as an old toad and ineffective at anything but swindleing money from the gay community.
at least this guy looks good.
Think I’d rather enjoy it while I was being ripped off than have to endure ugly.
Name (required)
I’ve known Jarrett for a while. He was responsible for marriage in Massachusetts and his husband worked very closely with Hillary as well as Kerry, Gore and Bill. Congrats!!!
galefan2004
@Tim: Nah, I personally don’t give a rats ass about his accomplishments. I mean, I admire that he has done stuff, but until he accomplishes stuff inside his new job I could care less what he has done. Also, I don’t consider 3 an accomplishment unless he is straight. He doesn’t look 20 to me, so if he is gay he should have been advocate of human rights since birth.
galefan2004
@M Shane: You sir are the walking embodiment of everything wrong with the gay community when you make a statement of stupidity like that. So, you are saying if an ugly man was capable of getting you gay rights you would ignore him in favor of a pretty man that wasn’t capable? Whatever!
Tim
@galefan2004: Yeah, you’re right. My 3-month old niece should be a human rights activist. All she’s doing is sucking her mom’s tit, pooping and learning how to crawl! What a loser.
Dabq
@Tim: Thanks for real info about him, but, you know this site is good for two things, deeming someone “hot” or anti-gay, nothing else matters, LOL, and good luck to Mr Barrios and maybe this will open the door for some real, much needed diversity at GLAAD.
galefan2004
@Tim: So true! She should be representing her people. Then again if she is straight she gets a pass. Yes, I realize how incredibly stupid I sound!
@Dabq: That is not entirely true. I respect what the guy has done. I just am on a wait and see basis when it comes to do what he will accomplish within GLAAD. What I can see right now is that he brings a welcome new face that just so happens to be as hot as hell to the scene so that is what I can comment on currently.
Gary
Has nothing to do with his handsomenesseses
I’ll wish him well with Glaad & hope that his guidance for the org is successful.
The fact that he’s easy on the eyes is a plus, but not a prerequisite to the work.
Get to work Jarret!

Another political hack. We were looking forward to GLAAD selecting someone who actually understood the DNA of the media industry, and insider—as they are the media watchdog. Instead they chose someone from outside the sanctum, a guy that has been kowtowing to the press throughout his political career. We will be redirecting our funding to GLAAD, including our planned giving. Bad move GLAAD — you finally had a chance. Your group has truly sunk to its lowest depths.
RyanP
Shame on GLAAD for choosing another political hack!
We were waiting with anticipation to hear the name of a media professional, a marketing or promotional professional that not only understood the DNA of the media industry, but would be able to partner with the media to move the group to the next level. Instead, GLAAD chose someone who has been kowtowing to the media ever since his political career began. We will be pulling our funding, as well as our legacy donation and all connections from GLAAD. They had an opportunity to make a difference and instead shot themselves in the foot.
Mike
Barrios is anything but a political hack! I was very disappointed when he left the MA Senate, as he had been a tireless and effective leader here in Massachusetts, and he was instrumental in keeping same-sex marriage legal here in MA at a time when it looked like it could be lost. He has exhibited strong political and media savvy in the past, and I don’t doubt his ability to bring this to bear in his new position at GLAAD. Kudos to GLAAD and to Barrios!!!

I’m pleased to know and have worked with Jarrett. I believe he will make an outstanding contribution to GLAAD and to our community. He is already a hero for his work in the Massachusetts state Senate, and he is unequivocal in his belief in full civil rights for LGBT individuals without delay or excuse.
Bertie
He is gay, married with children and was one of the initial signers of THE DALLAS PRINCIPALS. atta boy!

I met him in Dallas and he is a dynamo. He will lift our community to new heights. Yes, he’s cute and amusing, but even more he is intelligent, passionate for our civil rights cause and not at all self serving.
GaleFan2004
Yummy! This dude makes me want to get behind GLAAD because I am a dumb ass and want to support a loser that came from the state senate and has nothing to do with the media industry.
I won’t because I still believe that supporting local organizations is much more important then throwing money at big name nfp corporations, but at least they can pick some hot flesh. Hot loser flesh that has no credentials but has a Spanish name and that adds to empty credentials that the loser board of directors pathetically hose. Personally, I’d still rather see him as a male model than president of GLAAD as he has not credentials and I am a lost cause and should just jump off of the Empire State building and be a pile of shit on the street.
GaleFan2004
John in SF – BARF!! What a bunch of crap. I am “pleased to have know and worked with Jarrett” have you heard his girly, wining voice and is flaccid screen presence? He has nothing to do with the media industry and was the wrong choice for this job. What fundraising and media expertise does he bring to the table other than being a public servant that was sucking up to the media? As a member of the media we will NEVER take him serious. GLAAD should have chose one of us!
Scott
Is his job supposed to be civil rights leader? I don’t think it is; that’s what HRC is supposed to be doing. Isn’t he supposed to understand and have contacts in the media industry, including film, television and print? Nothing in the description of this guy suggests that he has these contacts. I don’t get GLAAD anymore.
John in SF
@GaleFan2004: his girly, wining voice and is flaccid screen presence
Excuse me, mister Queerty, do you happen to have a baggage check where we can store our internalized homophobia and gender intolerance?
swellster
I went to law school with Jarrett at Georgetown. Even then he was a focused and intense defender of civil rights for all. I have a great deal of respect for him. He is an impassioned leader and is in no way a political hack. We might actually see a national gay rights organization with some bite.
Charles Merrill
#22. Yes, GLAAD is about civil rights. Pressing the movie industry to include accurate portrayals and stories of LGBT’s, not the Will and Grace type swish and fetch it. Stories that portray same sex black couples, youth suicide, ect.
I remember when the movie studios excluded black stories from films. The only blacks seen on screen were Aunt Jemimah types. Sidney Poitier, NAACP and others did alot to change that. This is the work of GLAAD, not only giving fundrasing parties and smoozing with celebrities.
GaleFan2004
Film Studios want to let their guards down with those from the industry, not from the government side that has been regulating them for years. GLAAD made a bad choice. Again.
galefan2004
@GaleFan2004: Hello stalker…how are you? Does it feel all nice and warm basking there in my glory? I understand that I’m 10x the person you could ever be, but that will never stop you from aspiring to my greatness, so good luck with that.
alan brickman
watch glaad say obama is a good guy…
M Shane
@galefan2004 : It appears clearly that you are (object lesson above) of what is really wrong: STUPIDITY
FYI: my comment can easily be interpreted as a general perception of the effectiveness and appropriatness of the organizations involved; Nothing in particular about looks, which must be haunting the ruins where your brain should be.
Rob
from a fellow Mass. resident – Congrats to (former) Sen. Barrios for ascending to this very important position on the GLBT landscape. I just know he’ll do quite well.
jimmyjazz
Yes, of course he’s very handsome but let’s show more respect. He’s a community leader not a piece of meat….but while I’m here…uh…is he single?
