A new commercial for Tide To Go has taken a page from current events (we’re going to try not to say her name for once — rhymes with Tim Mavis) and given a hilarious spin to fringe religious bigotry.
Two men approach a church holding hands when a woman stops them in their tracks.

“I won’t let you blemish the sanctity of marriage!” says the woman, played by Lynne Marie Stewart (aka Miss Yvonne on Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Danny’s mom on Go-Go Boy Interrupted).
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
The moment of tension is broken when she busts out the Tide To Go pen and we realize she meant “blemish” in a much less metaphorical sense.
Watch below:
Tide to Go – WeddingFirst a clerk in Kentucky, and now a church lady in Los Angeles! This same sex couple faces yet another obstacle on the way to marriage equality in this commercial I directed. Special kudos for terrific performances by Matt Marr, Karl Ramsey, and Lynne Marie Stewart.

Of course normal people don’t have the time or bat-shit crazy passion for such nonsense, but I’d love to see these fundamental churches being picketed by people with signs and singing “You’re sky fairy ain’t the boss of me” (or something similar); just annoying enough to give them a taste of their own medicine. But of course that would Disturbing the Peace and the police would quickly step in.

Let me guess, Tide will release this commercial on the Internet and social media and will NEVER put it on network TV. That way they come off as accepting but won’t upset any bigots.

The Tide has turned.

So good–and they even throw in a little of our brother Handel!

I love the ad, and it will be interesting to see what kind of buy it gets. The real sign that the Jurrasic Republicans (Jurrassicans?) of the religious right have lost the moral high ground in middle America will be if it gets a national buy with a heavy rotation in prime time. Advertising for consumer goods is pretty much the last place where changes in social mores surface. Advertisers are usually too worried about pissing off any one segment of their market to make a social statement of any kind. Proof of this is that it wasn’t very long ago that the first consumer ads featuring mixed race couples started appearing. (Even today, they aren’t very prevalent). And you can count on a few hands the number of consumer ads that have featured same sex couples – so far.
Still, I applaud Tide for even making the ad and getting it out in any fashion. It’s real progress.

I love it.

@Will Glitzern: He wrote some good organ music. Why use a transcription of the Water Music?

Miss Yvonne will always be The Most Beautiful Woman In Puppetland!

It’s not actually a real Tide commercial. It’s a spec ad from director Mark Nickelsburg. P&G should use it though, it looks legit.

@McShane:
Actually this is a Tide commercial. The director Mark Nickelsburg did post it to his Facebook page but the story has been reported by ABC2News.com. It is being aired in Canada. Read the article here:

It’s a helluva funny video. I almost fell off my chair when I watched it!

@youarekiddingme:
That article is mentioning a completely different ad that ran earlier this year in Canada. But, yeah they are both very cute.

It’s time to take up some new mantras:
“Religious rights, not SPECIAL rights.”
God made Adam and Steve…and John and Joan and Heather and Tommy and Shaniqua too.”
“Homophobia is fundamentally incompatible with Christianity.”

@Cam:
Oh how awful. One less ad on TV.
