There’s something truly special about the bond shared between a mother and her gay son. In his latest video, L.A.-based pychotherapist Matthew Dempsey gathered a group of moms and their adult gay sons to talk about their unique relationships.
“Gay guys and their moms often have a special bond and a uniquely close relationship,” Dempsey explains. “Our moms gave us license to set down the pretense of how a “real boy” was supposed to be and allowed us to just be ourselves.”

In the emotional video, the moms discuss openly with their sons about when they first realized their little boys were gay, their fears for them growing up, challenges, rewarding moments, and more.
Dempsey explains: “In this video, my friends and I sit down with our mothers, whom we all flew in for a special weekend celebrating the fierce love they’ve shown us, to ask them what it was like raising gay sons and how they think things turned out.”

Both my parents allowed me to by myself. My mother said she knew since I was 4 and my father says it was earlier. Point is, neither of my parents was especially more understanding than the other. But this thinking is pervasive. When my mother died some guy said it must have been harder because gay men are always closer to their mothers. I am close to her but my whole family has always been extremely close.
I know that the gay man/mother thing is commonly shown, and probably true in many cases, but it’s yet another stereotype. Not all fathers are jerks.

when that mom said LIVE YOUR BEST AUTHENTIC LIFE i lost it . and yet i knew a guy who’s parents back in the 90’s hired 3 men to kidnap him and bring him to a christian brainwash compound. he beat the s**t out of the guys and told his parents if they ever tried that again he’d never speak to them. my own coming out to folks (as even now i still have to come out on a near daily basis. here’s an edited excerpt of another post i made… i grew up in a small midwest town in the late ’50’s -’60’s (right after the mccarthy era of BEWARE OF HOMOSEXUALS IN THE GOV’T AS THEY ARE RIPE FOR BLACKMAIL ) but i’ll give you a hint where: it’s a suburb of the town that spawned JAMES BAKKER and IGGY POP. my elementary school had a halloween costume contest which i won 1st place for kindergartners for my GLINDA, THE GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH costume (at least party because i wore my mother’s bubblegum pink pageboy wig ((she said,”don’t u remember just b4 i divorced your father i let him by me that pink 57 cadillac convertible and i used to don this wig and pink sunglass and take u and your older brother riding around town…she was all of 18 then)) and she gave me a full make up job) 1st place prize that year was a MORGAN silver $1.
PEACE MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!

That seems to be a bunch of feminine dudes on that video. That’s why they are so close with their mothers, coz they never psychologically separated from them and became men. That’s not what being gay is. I am gay but I was and am close to my dad and I played sports, not My Little Pony like that one dude in the video.
MrMichaelJ
Sure, dude. It’s a safe bet you’re the nelly queen of the crowd.
Virpilosus
WTF are you even talking about? You couldn’t display a more ignorant knowledgephobic stance if you put it up in klieg lights on a Broadway marquee.
MatthewHall

I love my mom but our personalities don’t mesh and it has nothing to do with my sexuality.
