Mormon Football Player’s Wife Fights Prop 8 For Families

Not all of America’s athletes are like Jeff Kent, the former baseball player who last week donated $15,000 to the “Yes on 8” campaign, which hopes to overturn gay marriage in California.

Football Hall of Famer Steve Young this weekend supported his wife Barbara’s work against the measure. Though he doesn’t say one way or another where he stands, Mrs. Young makes clear he’s backing her all the way. What’s most interesting about the Young family’s support isn’t their jock-tastic past, but the fact that they’re both Mormon.

Though the Mormon church has come out against gay marriage, the Youngs clearly see things differently – and Barbara donated $50,000 to prove it.

Said Mrs. Young on the matter:

We believe all families matter, and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop.8

I am very passionate about this issue and Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality. We both love our Church and are grateful that our Church encourages us to vote our conscience. Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement.

You know, that’s fine by us – as long as he’s not coming out against us and supporting you, Mrs. Young, Steve’s alright in our gay book.
