I really think we need to look beyond our Very Special Interests in this election. If it’s a given that NO ONE is going to magically bestow equal civil rights on the GLBTs (and, seriously, NO ONE was ever positioned to do more than babble words to that effect), then what is the environment in which we are more likely to be better off? Do we take our marbles and go home in a snit and enjoy 4 to 8 more years of republicans? Is that a better America for the LGBT community? Or might we be marginally better off in an American not ruled by theocrats, outright bigots, and sabre-rattling nincompoops? For all of DADT and DOMA, was the LGBT community better off, in broad quality of life terms, under Clinton than under the last 8 years of bush? If we get all pissy about this one, guys, we shoot ourselves in the foot.
EMB, don’t forget about the racism that blankets the white LGBT community. I can’t, since I have frequently been the target of it. Obama makes much more sense in terms of the issues than any of the other candidates, but there is that one factor…
Don’t forget that when Obama addressed a largely African-American church congregation on MLK day, he could have made an easy speech, but he chose to talk about how racism and homophobia exists in the African-American community and society at large. I feel like Obama has been very vocal about providing equal rights for LGBT people and I am confident he will champion our rights when he becomes president.
Obamas blunder of McClurkin was something thats scares me and then read he’s being endorsed by a man that is a spiriual adviser to George Bush and a pastor to a church that has a program to help gays turn straight and has said he would keep Bushes Faith based program that allows discrimination in hiring gay people one thing by itself is questionalbe but when theres more things piling up you have to wonder no doubt he would be better than bush but still panders to those that hate gays the msot and to me its not his stances on issue but who he stand on stage with.
I am a member of MoveOn.org and was sent a ballot to vote for the candidate I wanted MoveOn to endorse. The choices were Clinton or Obama. So the members of MoveOn decided who would get the endorsement. If you’re unhappy with that decision, become a member/supporter of MoveOn and make your voice heard. This decision wasn’t made in a vacuum. I abstained from voting, since I am, at this point, not enamored with either candidate. But, the rules were the candidates had to have two-thirds majority of members voting for the endorsement. If neither candidate got at least two-thirds, there would be no endorsement. What could be more fair than that?
Not to familiar with MoveOn.org but will start visiting and supporting them immediately. They chose the absolute best current candidate for the glbt community, Barack Obama!!!. I don’t know when glbt folk are gonna wake up and smell the obvious…Hillary’s never been a genuine ally for us. Sure, she’s a strong smart woman and we gay men and women love that. However, look beyond the surface and acknowledge that she didn’t support us when gays were not permitted to march in the St. Patricks Day parade though other democrats did support us by not marching. She supported Don’t Ask Don’t Tell during her husbands administration, she supported DOMA and only NOW has graduated to supporting civil unions. She says that the marriage issue is a states rights issue. How the hell can we support someone who sums up an entire community civil rights as a states right? Obama also supports civil unions but at least says he really doesn’t care what you call it and is only going with civil unions because he thinks it’ll have a better chance of passing on the FEDERAL level. He does not sidestep the issue by using the trite states right excuse. I have NEVER EVER heard Hillary bring up our issues when she’s been out campaigning unless she’s talking to a GLBT crowd. Obama does and always has talked about glbt folk in front of non-glbt audiences since he came to national prominence at the 2004 Democratic convention. I am not saying she is a homophobe and I’ll definitely take her over any republican candidate but Hillary’s current so-called gay-friendliness is soooo obligatory and reeks of a fad rather than a genuine heart felt concern for our community. Obama all the way!!!
“Hillary’s current so-called gay-friendliness is soooo obligatory.” I actually think the exact opposite is true. Apart from their near-identical political positions, Hillary strikes me as someone who knows and has been close to gays on a personal level, whereas Obama strikes me as the one who intellectually believes we’re ok but doesn’t quite get it on an personal/emotional level.
I’m still flipping on who I’ll vote for come our primary.
I agree with Landis. Although Hilary will win my vote over ANY Republican, Obama is by far the most vocal about our community without always being asked first. Sure Hilary will give some canned response when asked a question, but she lacks the true conviction of her words. The real truth of it all is that we have been thought of as 2nd class for far too long, and it is time we had someone who sees us as equal in the White House. I honestly believe that when it comes down to the choice between these two Hilary is winning out not because she is the better choice, but because she is white. And I should note that I am white, and therefore not playing the “race” card, I just see an awful lot of racism in our community and find it a shame that we of all people can’t even look past the color of a persons skin.
It’s high time for change, and Obama is the one to bring this country out of the dark ages and get us away from the rich, white, conservative rule we have been under.
You’d think America would have learned its lesson from Bush Jr. Obama has even less experience than Bush did when he was elected. We need someone who isn’t going to need on-the-job training. Vote for Hillary.
Seriously, who cares about this endorsement. I was just endorsed by Socks the cat, the political mastermind behind Bill’s first campaign. Talk about uniting the country!
Move.on did what? Obama? Why? He cannot even remain serious for more than 15 minutes. Have you heard him agree with Farakaan? A million man march is itself is discriminatory against women-he told women not to shop-like we don’t work. PLEASE!!! What a let down! This really makes me have to think twice about moveon.org and what and who they endorse. I will certainly remember this moveon.org
If Hillary was a man and Obama was white, the choice would be obvious. Hillary has much, much more experience than Obama – and just because you’re a person of color, doesn’t mean you’re the voice of change for a progressive new America. Americans seem to vote based on surface qualities (witness Bush’s “charisma”)- and that’s a scary thing. I’ll take Obama over the Republicans, for sure – but anyone who says there are still good, “moral” people who do not agree with gay marriage… well, they are not our ally. I agree with hisurfer: Hillary is the choice if you want someone who knows and is concerned about the gay community on a personal level.
“Hillary has much, much more experience than Obama – and just because you’re a person of color, doesn’t mean you’re the voice of change for a progressive new America.â€
I would highly recommend that you educate yourself first before you go and make claims such as this one. Hillary does NOT, I repeat does NOT have much much more experience than Obama. I know it may be hard for you Hillary supporters to look at the bare bone facts but please try to. FACT 1, in addition to Obama’s 3 years thus far (not counting this year) as a U.S senator Obama was also a Illinois state senator for 8 years before coming to the U.S senate totaling 11 years of ELECTED official experience. FACT 2, Hillary on the other hand was elected to the US senator a mere 1 term before Obama was making her grand total of ELECTED experience thus far 7 years (not counting this year). I am no math wiz but I do remember from elementary math that 11 is a bigger number than 7. So all of this overwhelming so-called experience that Hillary supposedly has is an extreme exaggeration. And PLEASE…don’t bother mentioning her failed attempts at health care as a first lady under her hubby’s administration because those duties were GIVEN to her, the American people did vote her into that position. And you are correct, just because you are person of color doesn’t mean you’re the voice of change for a progressive new America, though I haven’t heard anyone suggest that. But the same remains true for Hillary, just because you’re woman whose husband is a former president doesn’t mean that her administration will be a successful administration. Hillary is NOT Bill!!!
I think you’re missing the point, Landis … it’s that Hillary has shepherded a number of difficult bills through to legislation in the past seven years, while Obama hasn’t. Whether this matters, or should be a factor, or if we even agree with her positions, are all up for debate. In terms of getting bills passed, though, she’s miles ahead of any of the candidates, left or right.
Or almost any … are Biden and Dodd even still in this?
For me, this is why her Wal Mart Board service bothers me immensely – because she has shown that she could have fought if she wanted to.
I support Obama because it will be a global P.R. move.
We are at a point in history when one in five human beings hate our country and want to destroy us. Thanks to the cowboy-diplomacy of the current administration.
If we place an apologetic and humble African-American man in the position, it will instantly change the world’s perspective of us as a nation.
If we put a harsh sounding Vaginal-American in the position, it will escalate the resentment toward our nation.
Many white liberals are supporting Barack in droves to not look like racists but the Voters will vote with their Pocketbooks, not based on race. It’s still the Economy or have the limousine liberals Moved On, already. I need to pay rent and Hillary is just better on paper for the economy. I can’t change the world if I don’t have a home.
