Floridian gays just got a new ally.

As right wing activists gear up to fight gay marriage in Florida, legendary civil rights activist Julian Bond has pledged his power and prestige to opposing anti-gay discrimination. From a press release:

Bond, an icon in the civil rights movement for nearly 50 years and longtime national Chairman of the NAACP, has stepped into a leadership role with the Fairness for All Families Campaign the statewide coalition effort to defeat the deceptively named “Florida Marriage Protection” Amendment.

Bond will serve on the Honorary Board of the campaign to defeat the constitutional amendment, slated for the 2008 ballot, that could strip away employee benefits while barring the passage of measures to help Florida families.

Former Attorney General Janet Reno, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Reverend Nancy Wilson of the Metropolitan Community Church are also on the board.
