Jim Naugle just got a few new friends. A coalition of primarily black ministers have lent the Fort Lauderdale mayor their support to his homophobic cause. Peter Bailey of Miami Herald reports:
The predominantly black coalition of about 10 says its ultimate vision is to” transform Fort Lauderdale and Broward County into the Bible Belt of South Florida.”
In hopes of reclaiming the ”city’s Biblical heritage,” the group’s leaders say they plan to undertake measures “to ensure immoral behavior is not tolerated in the city or throughout the county.”
”We as a body of Christ support the mayor because he is addressing a moral crisis,” said Mathis Guice, director of the men’s ministry at Koinonia Worship Center. “People have to understand we’re in a spiritual war with Satan.”
That would be us.

One gets the distinct impression from reading this blog, that all black people (and only black people) are homophobic.
Woof
Maybe not the only, but they are sure good at it.

afrolito – I never realized that Larry Craig, Jim Naugle, Anne Coulter, Sean Hannity, that dork in the tuxedo, and all the other homophobes this blog covers regularly were black.
For the ministers, I say: tell me more about South Florida’s biblical heritage! I know that Moses led his people through Broward County sometime between the building of the pyramids and the Seminole War. Beyond that my sense of biblical history is kind of hazy. I blame the public schools.

It’s always the “black ministers” that come to the side of some idiot white politician. They can’t see how they are being manipulated.

Fred Phelps ain’t black, and the Reverend Jackson ain’t white.
What’s up with the casual stereotyping this morning?
afrolito
hisurfer – The few times black people are even mentioned on this blog, it’s usually in relation to their “homophobia”. Rappers, ministers, actors, singers, politicians….
Woof – blacks are better at it than whites? How so?? I wasn’t aware that black people are the ones stopping gays from having the legal right to marry, adopt, get domestic partnership benefits….

afrolito … sorry, I’m feeling anal this morning! I looked back over the past ten pages of Queerty, and found:
black ministers (homophobes, 1)
John Amaechi (queers, 1)
Michael Vicks lawyer (neutral post)
Marvin Gaye (neutral post?)
There’s a few more if we still count the Jackson family as black.
I can’t really buy that this blog only focuses on black people who are homophobe. On the other hand, you’re shockingly right about the lack of color in this blog. I’m sort of embarassed that I hadn’t noticed this.
Andrew, Andrew, Andrew – what the fuck? Four black folks in ten pages? Asians get it worse, with only one post … on Genghis Khan. Latinos are represented if they’re in bikinis. I hate to break the news to you, honey, but we’re not the majority anymore. At least, not where I live, and not where you live, and soon not in the US overall. It’s time to share your toys!!!
afrolito
hisurfer – I’ve been reading this blog for a while now, and i’m standing by my statement.
Don’t even get me started on “morning goods”. I think 3 black men were featured for the entire YEAR. Latinos are better represented, but only if they’re white. Asians fare just as bad as the blacks.

Hey Readers!
Andrew here. You’re right about some things, wrong about others. You’re right in saying there’s not enough people of color on this site. Don’t worry, we try to be as fair as possible. Notice, however, that a lot of the stories refer to killers and other anti-socials, ie: Republicans. Murderers, anti-gay politicians and the such are more often white than any other color. That’s life.
As for Morning Goods: again, we try to represent all colors of the rainbow, but, sadly, we’re limited by a number of factors. Modeling agencies feature predominantly white specimens. Yes, we could use non-models, but then we’re limited by photo quality and state of dress. You kids like your T&A, so if we put up a full-dressed Asian model, you’d still be unhappy.
We look all over the world for your Morning Goods. Unfortunately, many of the agencies in the Mideast and Asia don’t do a lot of skin. American agencies often block their pictures. Some European agencies are still using pinhole cameras. Trust me when I say we do our best to bring you a diverse mix of pictures and news. We’re open to story suggestions, etc.
xoxo,
Andrew

Hey Andrew – thanks for the quick response. Glad to know you care (sniff). I’ll keep an eye out for any homophilic multi-culti stories for ya.
The Ugly Betty new season promos are out on You Tube – that should count!
Afrolito – show me the numbers, and I’ll agree with you. Until then, while I fully agree that black folk are under-represented here, my quck search isn’t showing any bias towards only including phobic blacks (any more than phobic whites).

This discussion should not be about the coverage of antigay bigot superstitious groups unless that coverage is racist, which is not the case. It should be about their role and specifically who uses them for what political ends.
They don’t spring up out of thin air – they’re created in response to a political agenda, usually Republican, although there are plenty of reactionary Democrat bigots who do the same thing. This story has been unfolding for several years, and the highpoints are:
The Democrats, Bill Clinton in the fore, rammed DOMA and DADT through Congress to appeal to bigot churches.
The Republicans (Bush excepted) are not as stupid as they look and seized the opportunity this gave them to use Clintons laws as a precedent to solicit the collusion of bigot churches of all stripes in a campaign to pull in bigot votes, and sweetened the pot with bribes, in the form of handouts to ‘faith (read superstitious-bigot) based’ groups.
First among these were the roman catholic cult, the southern baptists, aka KKK, and the mormons.
Later the Republicans, guided by Bushbrain Rove, went after susceptible African-American churches, Latino evangelistas, Jewish ultra-orthodox leaders, and the neo-fascist slavic immigrant churches.
These bigot groups were rewarded for their work during the 2004 campaing in February of 2006 when Bush put his signature on a law giving 500 million dollars to superstition-based groups who oppose same-sex marriage.
The Reverend Kenneth Samuel, a Georgia pastor and NAACP official said many African American pastors oppose gay marriage because they’ve been “bought out” with faith-based initiative money. He’s right on the money and far more representative of leaders of African American groups than the hustlers and shills hired by the Republicans whe shrewdly used the Democrats own antigay program against them.

Well, as I have said elsewhere, whenever religion comes into anything, trouble is sure to follow.
