Whaaaaa?
Their base would embrace gay marriage?
Uh…

Even if the Republicans did it, I still wouldn’t trust them. The taint of their alliance with the Religious WRONG is thick in the air of the space they occupy.

With 26% of gay voters (was this just in CA or across the US?) voting for McCain, it seems probable to me that once gays are full citizens of the land, there will be less allegiance to the Democratic party. In fact, the demographic of wealthy, white gays would probably end up going Republican, if it weren’t for the radical social conservatives that currently dominate the Republican party.
It is when we achieve equality that the GLTB community will lose its cohesion and we’ll show everyone (else) how truly like them we are by dividing along the same political lines as the rest of the country. This should already be apparent by the highly charged comments left by various (I assume gay) users like Church-y, etc.
But I don’t believe that the current Republican “base” is interested in protecting marriage equality (although they should, if they care about marriage). But maybe this article is saying that the Repubs need a new base, and that supporting marriage would help them achieve it.
Even though this might sound like a bad outcome (increasing the number and acceptance of Log Cabin Republicans), in fact I’d welcome it, because it means marginalization of the radically religious who have corrupted the small-government, fiscally conservative Republicans of the late 20th century.

I agree with comment three. Sexual orientation is the only thing keeping some gays democrat.

It’s not the only thing keeping me democrat.
I find way too many republicans to be uptight, conservative assbags.

I consider myself socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Most of us live on a budget, and so should our government. I want a new BMW but know right now it is not in the budget, so I wait until I can afford it. It would be great, if we could fund every liberal program in the world, but the truth is we can’t. You can’t make a man not be poor. I would vote republican if one as described in the article would step forward. Look at what the Dems have done for Gay rights….big stinkin nothin!

It’s too bad people pledge allegiance to the republican party to ensure their wallets are full.
If a person is to lose their money, it will be due to corporate welfare, not social welfare.
Chuck
First off, they never would. This would cause a split in the GOP between the Evangelicals, the bullies, and everyone else (small group!) But splitting the GOP might be a good thing.
So yeah, they should. I mean if nothing else, it may make some Democrats (our new president included) finally get their act together and join the modern world.

If one wants to give their money away by all means do so, just don’t force me to. I’m I being selfish? So what…it;s my money. I care more about social injustice. I will pay my fair share of taxes, but not 50% of my hard earned money.
