New Music From Florence + The Machine, Garbage And More!

MTV premiered Florence + the Machine’s episode of Unplugged on April 8. (Yep, Unplugged is still around.) And in addition to some gorgeous acoustic renderings of Florence Welch’s own material, it featured Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme joining Welch onstage for a cover of “Jackson.” Now, it’s hard to beat Johnny Cash and June Carter’s original, but Welch and Homme come pretty close. Both have deeply soulful voices that lend something new to a song that usually sounds best sung by wilder, less polished voices. The album version of Florence + the Machine: Unplugged is on sale now available now—or you can watch it in its entirety on the show’s website.

For a certain type of gay Garbage’s brand of dark, angsty pop defined the 1990s. But Shirley Manson and co. haven’t released any new material since 2005’s Bleed Like Me, and that album and it’s predecessor, Beautiful Garbage, just didn’t have the same magic of the band’s first two discs.

It’s no wonder that the band’s upcoming release, Not Your Kind of People, has fans waiting with baited breath. Snippets of new tracks have been popping up on the Internet for months and, I’ll be honest, despite all the anticipation I’m still wondering whether Garbage can recapture that lightning-in-a-bottle feel they did on their self-titled debut and 1998’s Version 2.0. People’s first single, “Blood For Poppies,” hasn’t really done much to convince me. But maybe the rest of the album—and the band’s live dates—will be more impressive. Fingers crossed!

“Let It Go,” the new single from Dragonette, came out just in time for spring. You want feel-good music? This is it. It has the gleam of a Robyn track, only without the Scandinavian angst. It’s glittery, sunshiny electro pop—the kind of song that can make you skip down the street imaging yourself in some big music-video dance number. The band’s third album is due later this year, and if “Let It Go” is any indication, it will be well worth the wait.
