FAMILY, FRIENDS, ZOMBIES

New On DVD: Modern Family, Boys Next Door, Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Modern Family: The Complete Second Season
Fox, $49.98 ($59.99 Blu-Ray)

Modern Family got all those Emmys because the show a rarity: an intelligently funny mainstream family sitcom. And after a shaky early first season where it seemed like gay couple Cam and Mitchell didn’t even like each other very much, the show is much more recognizably human.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray
Paramount, $29.99

Yes, Mickey Rooney as a Japanese neighbor running around mixing up his Ls and Rs is racist. That’s how everything was back in 1961. (You’ve seen Mad Men.) Meanwhile, the rest of this Audrey Hepburn classic holds up for as many times as you want to watch it. Just fast-forward through Rooney’s bits.

Happy Endings: The Complete First Season
ABC, $35.99

It’s fine if you haven’t watched this show yet, but you might consider catching up. Sure, it’s Friends 2011, but there’s nothing really wrong with that. And it’s got a gay who defies expectations in Max (Adam Pally, who isn’t fat no matter how many times the show’s scripts insist on selling that lie). Homosexual slobs represent.

The Boys Next Door
Image Entertainment, $9.98

This 1985 sleeper from Penelope Spheeris (Decline of Western Civilization) stars a post-adolescent Maxwell Caulfield and an equally young Charlie Sheen as two “clean-cut” boys who go on a killing spree. At one point they murder a gay guy, but the real queer content is in the awkward but potent homoerotic nature of the buddy-slayers’ relationship.

LA Zombie
Strand Releasing, $24.99

From Bruce LaBruce, Canada’s least polite filmmaker, comes this gory art-horror-porno with Francois Sagat as an alien zombie who turns men from dead to undead with his zombie penis. Expect explicit everything.
