On Thursday, Julie Hermann, Rutgers’ new Athletic Director, revealed that she is gay. The news came in her official Rutgers bio, which included the following sentence at the end:

“Hermann and her partner Dr. Leslie Danehy are the proud parents of a seven-year-old son, Aidan.”

While her sexuality certainly won’t affect her abilities to fulfill her the duties of her job, ESPN reports that “Hermann is one of a few known athletic directors in Division I who has publicly acknowledged she is gay. She is one of only three current female ADs at the FBS level.”

“I’m really blessed to have a wonderful family, and we’re excited to become part of the Rutgers community,” Hermann told the sports network.

Hermann was brought on to replace Tim Pernetti as athletic director. Pernetti was forced to resign in the spring after it was revealed that the men’s basketball coach, Mike Rice, was abusing players and using homophobic slurs. Rice was quickly fired after EPSN aired a video that captured his treatment of the athletes.
