I'LL TUMBLR 4 YA!

New “Straight Up Thanks” Tumblr Praises Hetero Marriage-Equality Allies

This is Jessica. For weeks, she phone banked, she knocked on doors and talked to people, she waved signs, and changed people’s minds about what marriage equality means to all of us. She’s wonderful, and we love her.

It’s not often we get to promote something great on Queerty, so we didn’t want to let this opportunity pass us by. A new tumblr site, Straight Up Thanks, has been created to thank the heterosexual allies who helped bring marriage equality to Maine, Maryland and Washington State and defeat a constitutional marriage ban in Minnesota.

One poster thanked his friend Jessica (above): “For weeks, she phone banked, she knocked on doors and talked to people, she waved signs, and changed people’s minds about what marriage equality means to all of us. She’s wonderful, and we love her.”

While gays, lesbians, bisexuals and trans folk obviously went all out in these battleground states, these straight allies didn’t have a dog in this fight. And they didn’t just vote for equality—they gave of their time, energy and money to help a community they’re technically not a part of.

A statement on the site gives a little more detail:

We are LGBT people who want to thank the straight people who helped us win marriage equality in Maine, Maryland, and Washington state, and who helped us defeat an anti-gay marriage amendment in Minnesota. If you’re a queer person whose straight friends worked hard to win marriage equality—worked phone banks, knocked on doors, spoke out, gave money—send us a photo and a couple of sentences about what your straight friends did. Click on SUBMIT, upload a photo, and thank your straight friends publicly!

If you’re a straight person who worked for marriage equality… THANK YOU!

The reality is we can’t win the war without our heterosexual friends and family. So, thanks, guys—and keep up the great work!
