New York City Is Dead. Long Live New York City

By Queerty Staff January 13, 2010 at 12:01pm · 17 comments

Thought South Beach was on the wane? One peek at New York City’s nightlife shutterings might send the same message about America’s natural gay mecca. Well, you’d also have to discount all the new bars that have opened.

i thought the Roxy was going to re-open. And for some reason I thought Twilo was still around. I must be getting that confused with something else.

Roxy lost the liquor license for life. It will never be a club. Well the space lost it. Twilo may return keep the faith!

Limelight is a foodie and tchotchke market now! Roxy will never be back and watch out for Ritz and Splash bar to tumble next! Rush will most definitely be gone soon – never came back since early Heaven days. Thanks to the Bloomberg Stormtroopers!

I’m moving to new york in a year and i’m hoping for some sort of gay revival after this recession ends. In fact, i’m hoping there will be a whole cultural movement in the city as its been gentrified in the past decade or so. its lost a bit of its magic. but i still can’t wait!

i live in new york now from san francisco.

ny is just a rich man’s play ground with no depth outside of the tourist packed museums.

san francisco was a real city. and it didn’t snow there.

It’s ok out here in the dark cold streets of manhattan. I always have fun, but that is because I don’t read HX or whatever cum rag is out there.

When a gay state of the art nightclub is in vogue it slowly becomes mixed and we move on…same old, same old! Plus, Its 2010 we don’t have to go to gay bars to have fun we can go anywhere! I have just much fun if not more at straight bars/clubs, and are they really straight? NO! Just a tip, When you run into a “straight” stud act like your not interested, never make the first move, and at the end of the night you’re at his house making out on the couch! Safe Sex For All!!!!!!! PEACE!

This is why I (surprisingly) love Columbus, OH. Our community is estimated (and i believe it) at over 65,000 strong, with 15 bars and clubs and gay pride flags all over the city. Give me my affordable Columbus over crowded NY anyday of the week.

HX is no longer in print, it’s only Next mag (Great bar map, shallow content) but Gay City News is somewhat credible. Brooklyn is the new Manhattan while the latter is the New Hollywood. Bushwick (L Line), Crown Heights (The Jewish end) and Bensonhurst (F Line and safe) are up and coming progressive neighborhoods, Mike. Even Astoria, Queens is worth a look but Central Harlem is the next mega-Gay Hood in Manhattan due to the last piece of real estate affordability (maybe Chinatown/LES) depending on your income level. The tourists are nicer than the bridge and tunnel residents who are bitter they don’t live in Manhattan but always come here for everything from shopping to a relatively safer gay environment, except Saturday Night where youths are creating problems in areas like Christopher Street and Hell’s Kitchen. The recession will probably end in 5 years but New York will do what it damn well pleases, as it always has which is part of it’s appeal. Since many Manhattan gay men and lesbians are in their 40s and 50s on average, Happy Hour might be the best way to meet the locals, or three in the morning when the subway crowd have gone to bed! The awful trap about New York is that you realize how Gay it is once you go somewhere else, like Columbus, Oh-No! That probably sums up the sweet misery of New Yorkers, we are trapped in a liberal bubble of unfettered access and you just might be in the way of busy-busy bees in the Hive that is Manhattan; a city more famous than it’s inhabitants. Now, strike a pose!

Is is true a tsunamis will wipe out NYC in a few years?

Smart people rent above the 5th floor. Seriously, Far Rockaway, Coney Island, Fresh Kills and all of Manhattan would be underwater maybe in 20 years if levies aren’t built soon. It was in the Al Gore Documentary. An earthquake would be much more devastating which would take out Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant and the whole NorthEastern corridor from DC to Ohio.

SF has changed a lot, too. Overly pretentious and very elitist, but there is still a good class of freaks here. I love them. They add color to the place.

Jonathan probably speaks accurately of a parallel universe between the 2 Gay Capitals, albeit with the more “colorful” characters that make it more tolerable versus an increasingly irate mainstream with their vacuous lives and unfulfilled dreams. OompaLoompa and Mr Obote are just plain “Doomsday Crazy” who are so dissatisfied with their own angry-derived misfortunes that they cast aspersions at others. What weak people they are and what sad perspectives they have. New York will always re-invent itself and San Francisco will have a progressive renaissance.
