“It’s an honor,” Nick Jonas told L’Uomo Vogue when asked about how he felt being labelled a gay icon, “but I don’t consider myself an icon.”
The ever-humble Jonas, who is currently gracing the cover of the magazine’s December 2015 issue, added that he’s feels privileged to have such a strong gay following.

“There should be a lot more straight artists who don’t have a problem with having gay fans,” the 23-year-old said.
He was, of course, talking about his character Nate Kulina in the hit series Kingdom. Kulina is a fighter struggling with his sexuality. That’s in addition to his character Boone Clemens in Scream Queens, who is also gay.

“I’m really proud to play gay characters and I’ll continue to do so,” Jonas said. ““I think it’s among the challenges of maturing as an actor.”
Jonas also opened up about plans to return to Broadway with his old chum and LGBTQ activist Demi Lovato.
“I’m so happy to share the stage with Demi,” he said. “We’ve been friends forever. And I’m very pleased about the work done on the new album, it has more of a soul/R&B sound than the previous ones.”

Ooooh , but he is soooo fine

He’s not a gay icon – he’s just pretty.

Says who? He is not an icon

Good to see all that PR is paying out.

John Waters is an icon. Nick Jonas…marginally entertaining ally who’s easy on the eyes.
Louie Mars
I would eat his farts.
Lvng1Tor
@Glücklich: Agreed…icon status is earned over time and for having done something bigger than flashing abs at a gay bar…not that I don’t find him to be a good ally and very attractive.
Jason Sutton
Maybe a gay panderer.

Like him as an entertainer, but what’s “challenging” about playing a gay character that requires a “mature actor?”
End of Season 2 of Kingdom and very little need for “gay acting!” 99% “hetero” flaunting by an emotionally intense “closeted” gay boxer.
enlightenone
Between Caitlyn Jenner, Nick Jonas, Tom (the guy in swimming briefs), and Gus (something to do with skis,) I no longer know what “brave, “courageous,
“hetero woman,” “ICON” means.
Southstguy
@enlightenone: DEAD. So true.
SonOfKings
It was insulting t him to even ask that question. They must know he is informed enough to realize iconic status in the Gay community takes years, if not decades, to form. Cher is a Gay icon. So is Grace Jones, Liza Minelli, Donna Summer, and others of that caliber and wattage. He may one day become a Gay icon, but that will take a number of additional years of albums, artistic growth, and probably some stage and film roles too. I thought he answered well.

I respect Nick for this. An entertainer can be respectful of gay people without having to be an “icon,” whatever that means.

What world? Some asshole that will be in the bargain bin by 2017 is not an icon.

I would lick his left nut in Macys window.

23? Male? Straight? It takes a lot more than that to be an ICON. Wrong word to use.
Garland, Streisand, Madonna, Cher, Midler….ask them the meaning of the word. Highly unlikely that Jonas will be relevant after 30. You need to have a career for a good 20 years before earning the “icon” status.
James V Carroll
I’m not a particular fan, but he seems like a sweet enough fella. I just don’t understand the rude and cynical responses every time he speaks about LGBT influences. The only thing that offends me is those who choose to see the worst in people. 😛
Michael Claypoole
But you are Blanche, you are!
Nahald
I’m still waiting for him to come out of the closet.

You got the Scream Queens bit wrong Queerty
seaguy
I like Nick Jonas and all but he is not a “gay icon” that status is given to the likes of Madonna, Barbara, Diana, Dolly…but not Nick.
lykeitiz
@James V Carroll: Welcome to Queerty. You should see these cackling hens go after Madonna.
NoCagada
Just come out, Nicky
Chris
I disagree with QUEERTY; Nick Jonas is no gay icon. He’s an entertainer who, for some reason, this outlet has an almost-unhealthy pre-occupation with.
junk4sts
I think he’s right, he’s not a gay icon, he’s not even gay, how could he be a gay icon. Maybe a ‘gay support icon’ or ‘gay acceptance icon’. Perhaps they could just call him a ‘gay favorite? If you look up the word icon, there really isn’t a way that he could be called a “gay icon’ without actually being gay.
JPVG1085
I must agree with Chris. Jonas is no Gay icon. He is a marginal entertainer at best. Any of us would be happy to go through life without ever even thinking of this person.
Danke.
JPVG1085
The mere mention of any Jonas person, elicits laughter among my Manhattan friends.
There are Gay Icons, momentary favorites, bottom feeders and then the Jonas people.
Vielen Dank!
Poncho Sanchez
@Chris: I agree, I like Nick, but I’m not certain why this publication runs an article on him on a weekly basis. I do enjoy hearing about some celebrities, but Queerty focuses way to much on Hollywood/Madison Avenue. I also like to hear about gay scientist, architects, authors, engineers and others that contribute to progress.
Nat Jones
Really? A Gay Icon? Thank heavens he has the good sense to say that… He should have asked the idiot who called him a gay icon what he was thinking about..
Nat Jones
And how do you get the assumtion that ‘World begs to differ’? Most comments appear to agree with Jonas in that he is not an icon
woodin
Pandering to the gay community doesn’t make an icon or give you talent.
dahunt
I don’t understand the process by which someone is made an icon. What’s more, most of the old ones are straight women.
