An Anglican school is intent on shoving its sexual politics down students throats.
The all boys school, located in Australia’s Queensland state, rejected several gay kids requests to bring their same-sex beaus to the end-of-the-year dance. While headmaster Jonathan Hensman says he appreciates their asking, he simply cannot deviate from the dance’s historic trajectory.
We don’t intend to change our practice. As well as being a social occasion, it’s an education forum and to that end the school decides what is appropriate behavior and what is not.

Not all students take their girlfriends. Some take a female friend. It’s about protocols and decorums.
Well, sounds like the gays are going to have to draw on another tradition: the fag hag. Poor guys…

Souds like the “historic trajectory “needs to plummet down the toilet. God, just think how healthy a protocol it would be to adjust the decorum to reflect young peoples affectional choices.
It is refreshing to see that some kids asked. Where I grew up, I didn’t even think of that as an option, I wouldn’t have known out in the countryside. It’s learning self respect at a time when you and others need to learn it. Think how healthy that would be for hetero kids too.

That’s not really compassionate of them, is it?

Deplorable, but it’s a private school. They can do what they want. We must allow people to make personal decisions we do not approve of (i.e. organize schools and set their own policies) if we expect them to allow us to do the same.

There is a tactical approach to this situation. I’m sure some of the gay boys are acquainted with queer girls. Quietly arrange for boy couples to arrive with girl couples then simply dance with the true object of their affections. That would make it pretty educational. I suppose the girls might qualify as fag hags and the boys as carpetbaggers for carpet munchers.
P.S. I really hate the terms fag hags and carpet munchers.

Just because a private school can “do what they want” doesn’t make it right and doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be changed. The argument that private businesses can discriminate at will has been used to deny minorities access to hotels and women to be denied certain types of employment, both of which are now illegal under federal law. We should not be excusing private businesses (and especially schools that affect vulnerable children in our society) to enforce their discriminatory practices – whether those practices are rooted in “tradition,” religion or homophobia.

It’s terrible that this thing is still happening but expected. Especially with the way the Evangelical Branch of the church has a strangle hold on this country. Even our PM is an Evangelical Anglican. They are almost as bad as the Westboro Baptists. This is why I distance myself from the Anglican Church even though I was raised and still am a practising Anglican Christian. I was raised with the beliefs of the Middle Church of the Anglican Church which is a hell of a lot more left wing. If I could find a proper Middle Church or a Episcopalian one I’d go there. You Americans have a much better understanding of the Church than we do here down under.
