A new survey has found that two-thirds (65%) of gay and bisexual men said they didn’t use a condom the last time they had anal sex, and 27% said they would describe their sex lives as “risky.”
The survey was collected by the Gay Men Fight Aids (GMFA), a U.K.-based gay men’s health charity. Researchers surveyed 500 gay and bisexual men.
“We all measure risk differently,” David Stuart, who works at a clinic that specializes in services for gay and bisexual men, says. “Some only associate risk with HIV; others consider all STIs to be a potential risk. For others, risk is measured by rejection for not being sexy enough, fit enough or interesting enough.”

Despite the majority admitting their last sexual encounter was without a condom, this did not always indicate unprotected sex was necessarily dangerous. Same-sex couples who are married or in committed long-term relationships may choose not to use condoms when having sex with each other.
Then, of course, there are guys on PrEP, which protects against HIV transmission but not other STDs and STIs.
One respondent, a 36-year-old man named Jimmy, said whether he uses condoms really depends on what his partner wants.
“It was with a couple of guys I’d met before,” he explains. “One guy barebacked me, the other wanted to use condoms—both were fine as I’m on PrEP.”
Jimmy added that he would not be against having sex with someone he knew was HIV-positive. “As long as they are undetectable, there is no risk. I’m on PrEP now, so the chances of catching it are significantly reduced.”
This latest survey mirrors a similar survey conducted last year that found nearly 40% of gay and bisexual men reported regularly having unprotected.

Here’s an interesting question that has never been asked. How many out there simply can not stay hard wearing a condom even if they use Viagra, Cialis or whatever the others are? As soon as the condom is brought out things begin to diminish quickly for many. I’m willing to bet its fifty percent or better amongst us. Its not that we are stupid or bad people its because we are turned on and simply say to ourselves that its worth the risk. Yes its risky, but one gets tired of videos and such or continuously thinking something just has to be wrong with the other person. Its really stress relieving to get down and nasty every now and then. Good question, but you say “for many.” Is this true? Are you extrapolating from your own experience? Are there studies showing that many men cannot stay hard while wearing a condom? Just curious.
Again, get tested. If you’re seronegative (no HIV), have no STIs/STDs, and you know your sex partner or partners are also seronegative with no STIs/STDs, raw sex is safe. If you don’t know your serostatus, 1) go with PrEP and 2) wear a condom.

I wholeheartedly agree, Bob. For some of us, sex with a condom is not only pointless, it is not functional. Thankfully, I am in now in a committed long-term relationship, so the risk for me is minimal, but I completely sympathise with those who do take those risks regularly.

You see, what has always struck me as strange about Truvada (PReP) is once it came on the market no other breakthrough drug has been introduced. Truvada as well as other HIV medications are out of reach for the common working gay man. Its for the wealthy. If you have money your free to do what you want but without it have sex at your own peril. That is what it boils down to. It seems too odd that a drug can prevent the spread of HIV from an infected person but no drug exists that can cure it for those infected with it.

Does anyone here read MM romance? I (unsuccessfully tried) to read one recently and this was the scenario: one character was the only gay in the village and the other was a scientist-recluse who hadn’t gotten laid in about 5 years. Did they get squishy sans protection? No, they did not. They got blood tests, waited and waited, wouldn’t even do oral until the results came in. This was written as if it were all perfectly normal. Other stuff in the book led me to understand it was just a bunch of propaganda and I quit reading it. Was just wondering if anyone else is reading stuff with this kind of over-the-top paranoia. A hewlthy chunj of thisbpost is lifted directly from the Newsweek article. Also, neither had easy linjs to the parameters of the survey itself. How were the men in the survey selected? Did they regularly discuss whether these sexual encounters were in monogamous or semi-exclusive polyamorous situations? Did they ask about how frequently those surveyed get tested or how often they have anal sex?
There are too many particulars that were unreported in this post. It’s basically meaningless without them, because when you’re a hammer you go out looking for nails, but that doesn’t mean that the nails you come across are a representative sample. There isn’t even mention of how large the survey population was! What kind of useful statistics can be done without that?

As a top I don’t use condoms every time I have sex. I let the bottom decide if he wants condoms or not. Honestly I know I should use them as contracting HIV would be a bad day for me. But honestly speaking the difference between using a condom or not is like night and day. It’s not just the skin to skin contact either. There’s just something about leaving my semen inside a guy that turns me on like nothing else. It’s like I’m fulfilling a primordial urge/instinct.
