The One That We Want

Oh Sandy! HBO Max announces a new TV series based on ‘Grease’

We’ve got chills, and they’re multiplying…

HBO has just announced a series order for Rydell High, a spin-off musical show based on the popular musical film Grease.

Like the film that inspired it, Grease: Rydell High will take place in a camp version of the 1950s, and feature full-on musical numbers. Songs will come from the popular tunes of the period, and include original compositions as well.

“This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock ‘n’ roll musical,” Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max head of original content, said in a statement. “It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs.”

The original 1978 film version of Grease starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and became a smash hit upon release. It went on to spawn the unfortunate sequel Grease 2 and remains a cult hit to this day. The series will debut on the streaming service HBO Max, though a release date has yet to be announced.
