Once the ink dried on New York State’s marriage-equality amendment, businesses of all kinds went into overdrive to court the LGBT market—hotels, car-rental companies, caterers… News Corp.
Yep, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and Fox News is getting ready to publish WEDDING Pride, a high-end glossy magazine featuring “editorial content that celebrates the Gay Community and its recent achievement.”
Launching in September, the mag (produced by News Corp’s Community Newspaper Group subsidiary) will have an initial distribution of 35,000 among “the traditional as well as the newer gay and gay friendly communities within the Tri-State area.” (Translation: Chelsea, Park Slope, Fire Island, Montclair, South Orange, Asbury Park.)
While we have no problem with the commercialization of gay marriage, News Corp’s record on marriage equality ain’t so hot. As Gay Cities News pointed out, a New York Post editorial from June 14 said, “There is no denying that same-sex marriage could become law this year. This reflects a seismic shift in society’s attitudes on the issue and a growing acceptance of gays in general. Still, the question is vexing. But if we had a vote, it would be no. Marriage as an institution has fallen on hard times in recent years. But that’s no excuse for weakening it further.” Aww, does that mean you’re not sending a present?
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
If you’re a wedding singer or florist and want in on this action, we’ve included a copy WEDDING Pride‘s ad specs. Hurry up, though, the reservation deadline is August 19!

LOL… Too funny
We have been forcing small mom and pop business’ who are on the far right to take our money that did not want… like the B&B in New England… Photographers, florists, etc.
Now we are gonna get a bit pissy when the far right wants our money.
Sounds like we are a bit Hypocritical… don’t you agree??
MBear
as long as they’re in the biz of propagandizing their viewers/readers against equal rights, this is merely a recognition that yeah, we’re going to get equal rights and they want to make money off us.
So, make money on the anti-equality fervor AND make money on the joy we experience when we get our rights.
How many shades of evil might this be.
Kinda smart biz move, but I hope WE can be smarter than that and not allow ourselves to be just pawns for their shallow pandering
MBear
innnnnteresting comment on that JAW. Neet angle.
That’s worth a ponder for all of us who consider what businesses to support.
Of course, the issues with ‘forcing’ businesses is more along the lines of not being denied our rights. If businesses can discriminate at will we’d probably still have ‘no coloureds’ on a few ice cream counters, eh?
In as much as I love oversimplification, I’m thinking you missed an important factor in yours, but I’m not sure what it is.

A@JAW: As long as those minions of News Corp talk the talk and walk the walk in attempts to destroy the lives of LGBT’s around this nation, we are within our rights to say,
FUCK NEWSCORP!
tjr101
Rupert Murdoch’s empire of lies and deceit is at it again and it’s all about the money. They will promote hate for gays and other minorities through their right-wing propaganda and at the same time extend their hands for our cash.
JAW
@gregger:
I am not a fan of newscorp. Guess my point is… There are a lot of people that hate us, like newscorp does. I would love to know who all the business’ are that hate us, so I do not give them any money.
I have bigger issues with those in our community who want to force business’ that hate us to take our money. Do you really want to trust the photographer who said “I do not do gay weddings” to take incredible pictures of the most important day of your life?
Yes, I understand that we have a right, guaranteed to us by the US Constitution, to force the photographer to take the pics, or to stay in a B&B owned by a very religious couple, etc… but why the hell would any of us want to line their hateful pockets with our money.
The issue that will happen with this is… some radicals in our community will call for boycotts of all of the business’ in the magazine, as well as boycotting any business that sells or displays the book. Most of them will have been rooked also. So do not blame them… just get the word out.

I hate Fox News, but the title of the article is misleading. It should be “Parent Company of Fox News…etc”
Jim
This is crazy. What are they going to do next, have a show with gay characters and lots of singing and dancing?
Michael
@JAW: I’m sorry, but in what way do you think that is an apt comparison? No one is demanding that a subsidiary of Fox News take our money. Your comments is beyond dumb.
Alex
Why does this surprise anybody? Fox is a business, they will publish anything, as long as there is money to be made. Gays and Lesbians are a target demographic just like paranoid, small minded idiots.
Jason
Aren’t we being a little shallow with our comments here? Just because The Post took an adverse stance against Gay Marriage does not mean that all the companies of the News Corp empire feels that way. Even further, the company has tens of thousands of employees of which thousands are openly gay. From a different angle, shouldn’t we be happy that a company that was (in your words) so against Gay Marriage, may now feel differently? Isn’t that what we were striving for? To make those that never supported us understand that our feelings are true and needs to be recognised? Shouldn’t we be viewing this as an LGBT accomplishment?
