A young man falls into the fabulous world of vogue balls. An Australian teenager discovers his soon-to-be stepdad is a serial killer. On the eve of his 30th birthday an L.A. man reconnects with his intense ex-boyfriend. And a giant killer shark invades the waters off Amity Island. So begins a new week of DVD and Blu-ray releases with the arrival of Leave It on the Floor (above), August, The Snowtown Murders, and a reissue of Jaws, as well as Serbian cult film The Life and Death of a Porno Gang and the sixth season of hit TV series Dexter!
Leave It on the Floor
($24.95 DVD, Wolfe Video)
An electrifying musical dramedy set in the world of L.A. drag balls, Leave It follows a young gay man (Ephraim Sykes) as he finds love, family and a new identity in the House of Eminence. Directed by Sheldon Larry (Noah’s Arc) with a screenplay and lyrics by Glenn Gaylord (Eating Out: All You Can Eat), the film gets a boost of star power from two of Beyonce’s collaborators, composer Kim Burse and choreographer Frank Gatson Jr. DVD extras include music videos and interviews with members of the cast and crew.
August
($24.95 DVD, Wolfe Video)
After circulating the film festival world for months, Eldar Rapaport’s August finally hits DVD. The romantic drama focuses on Troy (Murray Bartlett), who returns to Los Angeles as his 30th birthday nears, after having spent several years in Spain. He reconnects with his ex-lover Jonathan (Daniel Dugan), and the two engage in some harmless coffee talk—until feelings reignite and the two wind up in bed. The only problem is Jonathan has a new boyfriend, Raul (Adrian Gonzolaz). Will he choose his comfortable life with quiet Raul or a life of hectic lust with Troy?
The Snowtown Murders
($22.49 DVD, IFC Films)
Based on a true story, The Snowtown Murders takes place in a podunk Australian town and centers on troubled 16-year-old Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) who, when not getting sexually violated by his older brother, must deal with his kind-but-alcoholic mother and her new boyfriend, John(Daniel Henshall). It turns out John is actually a psychopath killing local gay men he thinks are pedophiles. It’s not long before John manipulates Jamie into becoming an accomplice in his world of horrors. Grittier and more disturbing than the typical Hollywood thriller, Snowtown is a film you won’t easily forget.
The Life and Death of a Porno Gang
($26.99 Blu-ray, $21.99 DVD, Synapse)
This 2009 film is probably the craziest to come out of Serbia since, well, A Serbian Film. Taking place during the Balkan Wars, Porno Gang features film student Marko (Mihajlo Jovanovic) who gets a job his dream job as a porn director. But after he gets mixed up with the local mob, he enlists the help of a misfit group of actors (including a couple of gays) and escapes in a run-down van. While on the road, the gang performs live sex acts for countryside folk to make money. Both the Blur-ay and DVD include a making-of featurette.
The godfather of all summer blockbusters, Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thriller finally hits Blu-ray with a brand new restored picture. If you’re one of the few who doesn’t know the story of a quaint New England beach community terrorized by a ginormous Great White shark, now is the time to grab a copy. (Preferably not right before heading to Fire Island.) Film aficionados will be happy to know the Blu-ray includes the sought-after 2007 documentary The Shark Is Still Working: The Impact and Legacy of Jaws, as well as a vintage making-of doc, several deleted scenes, bloopers and an eight-minute “From the Set” piece from 1974, featuring a 28-year-old Spielberg.
