THE SCREENING ROOM

ON DVD: “Looper,” “Cosmopolis,” “Saltwater,” And More!

What better way to nurse a New Year’s hangover than with this week’s new DVD releases? Actually, sci-fi hit Looper may induce a bigger headache with its loopy time-travel plot, and David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis is fairly heady as well.

The indie Saltwater, about a gay veteran looking for love, is thankfully more grounded—though that’s not a word we’d use to describe the American version of Being Human, which sees its second season coming to DVD in the U.S.

UP FIRST: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis go back to the future in Looper

Looper
($35.99 Blu-ray, $30.99 DVD; Sony)

In this time-twisty sci-fi hit, Joseph Gordon Levitt plays a hitman who whacks guys sent back from the future. But when one of his targets turns out to be his future self (Bruce Willis), all hell breaks loose.  Though not without its flaws, this yarn is a lot smarter than you might expect. Extras include a commentary track, behind-the-scenes footage and, exclusively on the Blu-ray edition, a whopping 17 deleted scenes and a featurette on “The Science of Time Travel.”

Cosmopolis
($29.98 Blu-ray, $24.98 DV; Entertainment 1)

David Cronenberg adapts Don DeLillo’s novel about a 28-year-old billionaire (Robert Pattinson) whose limo ride to the barber shop turns into a virtual Odyssey. Bizarre, atmospheric and talky, it’s actually one of Pattinson’s best films and roles to date. Extras include a commentary with Cronenberg and cast and crew interviews.

NEXT: Ronnie Kerr makes a splash with Saltwater

Saltwater
($24.99 DVD; Ariztical Entertainment)

With his military career behind him, a former Naval officer pursues life in civilian society, including a possible romance with a rugged Australian hunk. Starring Saltwater screenwriter Ronnie Kerr and out rugby player Ian Roberts, it’s a low-budget queer indie with lots of heart.

NEXT: A vampire, werewolf and ghost learn about Being Human
